Hey events list folks!

I'd apologize about the lack of events email yesterday, but I know
you were all too busy being totally awesome to care. Anyways, I
remembered today and here I am again, hoping you'll all come out to
AS220 for some sweet shows we have coming up in this first week of
September.

The first Sunday of the month means The Empire Revue is gonna knock
your socks off with an unpredictable array of cabaret variety show
entertainment. Music! Dancing! Burlesque! Sketch comedy! It's
nouvelle-vaudevillian entertainment worth checking out this Sunday
night.

Regardless of your state of employment, celebrate the working (wo)man
in style at our Labor Day Sidewalk BBQ with folky tunes and burgers.
The band, Jennifer Gentle, plays twangy avant-pop along with Cadence
Green, The Dodos, Spokane and The Chris Monti Acoustic Band while our
very own Jeffrey Alexander grills delicious food for your eating
enjoyment. All this for $7?!? This is what Americana means.

Jeremy Boyle kicks off a night of truly progressive music with his
musical project featuring a midi-controlled pneumatic guitar and drum
kit, along with Rick Gribenas from Antennacle, Bastard Noise and
Baylies Band on Wednesday. Baylies Band has their Myspace profile set
to private so I can't tell you what they sound like, but they have
weird roster of bands they've played with, including Lightening Bolt,
Arab on Radar, Staind and Godsmack, among others.

Alright! Peace, love, and tenderness, babies!
Here are the listings for the week!

6pm LABOR DAY SIDEWALK BBQ with Cadence Green, Jennifer Gentle
(Italy), The Dodos, Spokane and The Chris Monti Acoustic Band
Hey LABORERS, this is YOUR DAY! AS220 fires up the coals! Come on
down and eat for free - boo ya. (Sorry street people: only folks that
pay for the show get the free eats). EARLY SHOW~! Food at 6pm, music
starts at 7pm and done by 11pm - FOR REAL. CADENCE GREEN is some
dudes from Newport RI who play a sweet high lonesome (and sometimes
gritty rockin) indie folk rock - real nice stuff inna Will Oldham,
Harvesty Neil Young kinda mood. Check out this music video they got
up onna the youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK9wHxR_eYE
JENNIFER GENTLE (from Italy, on Sub Pop). Two years after the release
of Jennifer Gentle's critically acclaimed Sub Pop debut Valende, the
Italian psychedelic avant-pop explorers are back with 'The Midnight
Room'. Evoking bizarre, otherworldly images of gas-lit street
corners, abandoned theatres, labyrinthine corridors, The Midnight
Room marries the intensity of primitive rock n' roll with a renewed
taste for a certain kind of typically Italian melody - albeit
deconstructed, shattered and broken into tiny little bits. Think of
Link Wray, Krysztof Komeda and Federico Fellini rolled into one
short, dense, cryptic tour de force. ".. acid frazzled psychedelia
favoured by Syd Barrett, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Os
Mutantes and the 13th Floor Elevators." (-BBC) THE DODOS from San
Francisco... "But wait. Here I am making The Dodos sound like Liars
when they're probably closer kin to Animal Collective. Long's psych-
folk-pop compositions are smart and tight and melodic and his hammer-
handed, fleet-fingered acoustic attack always meets Kroeger's thumps
halfway, awkward toe to toe, chin to chin, heat to intensity. And his
voice is great. Warm and wobbly and familiar like a brother's or a
best friend's. Except (or maybe mostly?) when he's yelling like an
asylum escapee -- anguished, near-inarticulate, tonsil-baring scream-
sobs..." (-Shake Your Fist) SPOKANE (Jagjaguwar Records): In Church
Hill, a borough of Richmond, Virginia, there is a small yellow
cottage. Next to the cottage is an austere replica of a mid-
nineteenth century, white Federal period house. The members of
Spokane hand built the structure over the course of 2006 while
recording and revising their first new album in four years, Little
Hours. The record is both a document of and an aural parallel to that
difficult, meticulous process. In the emotional vein of folk singer
Jackson C. Frank with the textural emaciation of composers Zbigniew
Preisner and Morton Feldman, the songs themselves are hinged on
concepts of failure and stillborn ideas, on the conflicted process of
building or birthing a cerebral image into the world. There are the
echoes of insistent cats running through the skeletal frame of the
house, pillaged, infant birds in their mouths, left half-dead at the
foot of the hole where the stair would be. The brutal gutting of the
earth to build a foundation wall of concrete and brick, by sheer will
and intent and arrogance. There is the crude muscling of lifted walls
that block out the sun and obscure the trees. And the thought of
future inhabitants, laughing and arguing and sitting, each alone, the
ghosts of these songs wilting and remnant in the air... Providence's
CHRIS MONTI ACOUSTIC BAND kicks it all off with a totally acoustic
sidewalk set... yeah! Dig the cool sounds out front with the BBQ.

9pm Baylies Band, Rick Gribenas and Jeremy Boyle
JEREMY BOYLE (founding member of Joan Of Arc) will be "playing" his
new work: midi-controlled pneumatic guitar and drum kit that plays
itself! Check out this crazy quick-time vid: http://jeremyboyle.com/
front/drumgtr1.html
RICK GRIBENAS (from Antennacle, Bastard Noise) played here recently
with Landed and Peter Brotzmann -- tonight he will be presenting a
laptop set with some custom electronics... BAYLIES BAND from New
Bedford MA is Eric Baylies: bass, moog, theremin, voice. Steve
Santos: guitar, theremin. Henry Chandanais: drums. They play mostly
noisy, acid, and prog rock, with a little punk sometimes. They appear
on the 75 Or Less Recs Compilation "Rock Out With Your Tail Out" and
have also been on 2 comps from the Boston label Fan Attics, "Runt Of
The Litter" and "More Than You Can Chew", a comp from the Hard Knocks
label in Madison, WI and a comp from Little Mikey's Noise Factory in
Cleveland,OH. They also had a song in the film "My Drug Dealer" from
North Carolina in 1998. Baylies Band have played shows with Lightning
Bolt, Arab On Radar, 6 Finger Satellite, Ultra Bide, Season To Risk,
Mahi Mahi, Landed, Neptune, Dynamite Club, Ex Models and for some
reason Staind and Godsmack a couple of times each when they started
around 1995 or so. Cancer, drugs, drink, marriage, and other madness
may have sideswiped them along the way, but they have never gone more
than a couple of months without gigging or recording. 2/3 of their
early recording lineup did a full length on Load Recs as A Stoveboat.
Eric also plays in Philly based Temple Of Bon Matin (Bulb, Spirit of
Orr, Stiltbreeze) who have toured Europe, Asia and about 40 states,
playing shows with Boredoms, USA Is A Monster, Andrew WK, Gang Gang
Dance, Thurston Moore, and Volcano The Bear. Temple Of Bon Matin also
includes Jay Reeve (Drugstore), Vinny Paternostro (who has played sax
with Violent Femmes and Radon), Ed Wilcox (who has played in No Neck
Blues Band and Silver Apples briefly) and part time members Arthur
Doyle (Sun Ra) and Steve Mackaye (Stooges, Radon Ensemble). With Club
Math Eric has played shows with Lungfish, Metallux, Fat Worm Of
Error, Can't, Tiny Hawks, Awesome Color, Dynasty, 16 Bitch Pileup,
and Sword Heaven. A long, long time ago Eric played in Blind Rhino,
who toured with Nuclear Assault and Blue Oyster Cult, and did shows
with Swans, Killing Joke, Warrior Soul, Bad Religion, Mudhoney, Soul
Asylum, Butthole Surfers, Bunny Brains, and Savage Republic. Whew.
