Message-ID: Hey Dreyfus and Empire artists and Residents, I am trying to set up a group of artists that want to bring works in progress and ideas to a group with hopes of receiving constructive feedback and inspiration, {perhaps monthly?}. My medium is drawing and printmaking and I could benefit from receiving other people's thoughts outside of my own circle. I don't know if there already is an official AS220 crit group that does this already (which in that case I will check out), If not lets take a stab. As a Dreyfus resident I am looking to get more of a dialogue between my neighboring artists. I think the lack of a Dreyfus communal space and conflicting schedules make it hard to connect with your surroundings. Support 300 people arrested in Saint Paul! Demand an end to illegal detention and brutality in Ramsey County Jail! 9/3/08, St. Paul - Approximately 300 people have been arrested for participating in demonstrations since the beginning of the Republican National Convention. The majority of arrestees remain in custody and are being held in inhumane conditions. Of the 300 arrested, approximately 120 have been accused of trumped-up felony charges by police; many of them are being held illegally beyond Minnesota's 36-hour limit on detentions without formal charges. All people who value democracy and fear for the erosion of our constitution, regardless of political affiliation, are called upon to demand an end to this egregious denial of constitutional and human rights. Prisoners have reported being denied medical treatment and essential medications, and many are engaged in a hunger strike to pressure the sheriffs to give them critical care. Many are being held in 23 hours/day lockdown and/or have not been allowed to meet with lawyers or make phone calls ? especially trans prisoners. Several prisoners have been able to reach legal support to report brutal physical assaults by multiple corrections officers. The constitutional and legal rights of all prisoners are being denied across the board, with no apparent end to this outrageous treatment. Please call the following offices and continue calling until all arrestees have been released: St. Paul Mayor ? Chris Coleman (651.266.8510) Head of Ramsey County Jail ? Capt. Ryan O'Neil (651.266-9350 ext 1) Ramsey County Sheriff ? Bob Fletcher (651.266.9333) County Chief Judge Gearin (651.266.8266) Demand the following: Immediate medical attention as needed for ALL arrestees; That the prisoners who haven't given their names (Jane & John Does and Jesse Sparkles) have access to group meetings with a lawyer in jail; Dismissal of all charges; Release of all minors; and Ensure trans prisoners have access to phone and attorneys, and are held in gender group of their choice. I just got back from the Nader/Gonsalez speech-fundraiser and I feel a thousand times better. I'm at the good ole Hard Times Cafe in Minneap; dope vegan food, great music, free wireless, stays open till 4am. Randomly met up with one of the friends I got arrested with and lost after they discharged us at different times and then refused to release our cell phones or wallets till monday. If I didn't have so much support, I might still be in there. I was hijacked and illegally taken into custody with my main friend/contact in minneap... we got taken in with our other friend... no access to any of our numbers, no way to get in touch with our Minneap people. I always keep the ACLU's number on me at these things, whether protesting or writing/reporting; my sisters was the only number i could remember and it would have been very difficult or near impossible for her to do this over the phone. Sean came over the hill like the goddamned cavalry and didn't stop swinging till I was bonded and released... I walked out of the county cage tunnel to a hero's welcome; 200 strong in jail supporter at the ready with blankets, food, and a phone. Sean was right there in the parking lot waiting for me, after an entire day of phone calls, waiting on hold forever with county, and supporting my sister in trying to track down my property. Daley Express Rescue services then bought me Pizza Luce vegan spaghetti and veggie balls, and drove me home. I couldn't have asked for better. I felt like fucking royalty rescued from kidnappers. Sincerely. I'm humbled, by that, and by this thread and the support shown here. Really. All of you, although i'm only 5"5 and 145lbs, I normally feel 10 feet tall and bullet proof. But not today. I've been arrested a bunch of times doing this, and have seen alot of fucked up shit, but this is the first time I ever came out feeling shook. It's humbling and slightly embarassing. I feel so pissed, and charged to continue even harder, but I've got alot to think about. I know it's maddening for me to just post this little snippet while there are so many questions to be answered. I'm here in this cafe working on my notes right now. This is the first time i've had online, at a table, to organize writing and ideas since sunday night. I definitely wanna address everything that was discussed here, and re-address my motives behind this project, overall direct action philosophies, etc. will do as soon as i can. Obviously thanks to Mr. Francis, B., Tom, Messiah, Phil, and everyone who was down to help. It was quite an unexpected surprise to come here and see this thread. Saturday, September 20th Lecture Supported though a grant from The Rhode Island Council for Humanities 5:30pm Location: 115 Empire Street, Gallery/Performance Space The AS220 Community Printshop is extremely pleased to announce that professor, scholar and printmaker Andrew Raftery will be joining us, along with Grehchen Wagner, Curatorial Assistant from the Department of Prints and Illustrated books from the Museum of Modern Art, on Saturday, the 20th of September, for two very special guest lectures. Andrew Raftery (MFA, Yale University School of Art), a printmaker specializing in narrative engravings of contemporary American life, is an associate professor in the department of printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design. Raftery recently received a 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship, and will use the fellowship period to complete an engraving project he?s been working on for several years. The works will be exhibited in a solo show at New York City?s Mary Ryan Gallery in October. His work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Fogg Art Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery and the New York Public Library. ?I would like to talk about the power of the artist as publisher, first by defining self-publishing for the audience. Then I would like to trace a few highlights from art history including D?rer and his enforcement of his copyright against Marcantonio in Venice, Diana Mantuana and her use of the Papal Privilege to ensure the copyrights to her work and of course Hogarth?s lobbying for the act of parliament that created the first copyright laws for visual artists. I think these compelling examples can show how printmakers established their own agency within the larger culture. I would then like to talk about current practices in publishing and my own experiences as a self- publishing artist.? -and- Gretchen L. Wagner (MA, Williams College) is a curatorial assistant in the department of prints and illustrated books at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Wagner has curated exhibitions at the D.U.M.B.O. Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY, the Tang Museum at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, among other institutions, in addition to acting on the programming and curatorial committees for WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution and Greater New York 2005 at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, NY. ?In recent years, contemporary artists have taken printmaking into the realm of the super-size. Pointing to monumental works of past eras, such as Albrecht D?rer?s woodcut Arch of Maximilian I, artists practicing today have embraced the medium to produce sprawling installations and environments in the gallery with dramatic effect. Large formats have also allowed individuals to place their works in exterior and public spaces, far more expansive then the typical interior setting. Outside, the works often take on meanings with social and political resonance. Closely following these developments in the medium, The Museum of Modern Art has recently acquired several projects by artists working in this manner, such as Gabriel Orozco, Nicola L?pez, Nicolas Lampert, and Swoon, among others. This presentation will introduce some of these works, and the challenges involved in their museum display, as an investigation of this recent turn in printmaking and its impact on art produced in all mediums.? They are looking for volunteers to help build and to spend time with neighborhood children during the build. Below is the email we received that explains the event in detail. For more information, contact Rachel Newman Greene, rngreene at elmwoodfoundation.org, or Doug Victor, doug.dance at juno.com. ________________________________ Dear Community Partner, Please come help us build the Peace and Plenty Community Park in Elmwood! Volunteers are needed for a ?community-built? playground project on September 9th and 11th, 2008. It will be you, your neighbors, community agencies, and a total of 250 other volunteers, with food, entertainment and good times for all. Please come, and please spread the word! On the 9th, we need folks who can do a little heavy lifting and use some tools. On the 11th, we need everyone, no matter what their abilities. Here are more details: The Friends of Peace and Plenty Community Park, in partnership with CommunityWorks RI (formerly Elmwood Foundation and GENS) and the City of Providence Parks Department, are extremely fortunate to have received a playground building grant from KaBoom! and Home Depot for the creation of a wonderful new community park and playground in North Elmwood. By the end of September 11th we will have a new playground for our community?s children and a beautiful green space for our neighbors to gather! The new park and playground will be located at the corner of Peace and Updike Streets (behind St. Joseph Hospital). This is the culmination of years of hope and work on the part of many neighbors. We need to pre-register as many people as possible, so if you are able to make it or want to find out more, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. Thanks so much for being great neighbors. Youth Media. We have a screening this Sunday afternoon (see below) at the Providence Latin American Film Festival. It will be a very interesting event including panel discussions with the participating youth from both Harken and Grassroots Garage. Our youth have worked hard to produce two short documentaries on timely and critical topics: teen pregnancy and immigration. Please come out and support them! ? FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Providence Latin American Film Festival is proud to announce its first ever youth media forum ?Youth Speaks? to be held September 21st, 3:00 - 5:30PM at the RISD Auditorium 17 Canal Street, Providence, RI. This event is FREE to the public. Contact: Brown University (CLACS) at 401.863.2645 for further information. Youth Speaks will highlight the work of local youth media organizations including our very own Lights, Camera, Advocacy which is a collaboration between PLAFF and Grassroots Garage bringing you Got Babies? a 35 minute look into the world of teen pregnancy. We open our youth media event with a screening of Let Freedom Ring (14 mins), produced by the youth of HARKEN! Youth Media, investigating the issues of immigration and the Executive Order. Our closing film will be a montage by Sinnerman Productions (25 mins), an entrepreneurial film company headed by two young directors. HARKEN! Youth Media?s (HarkenProds.com) mission is to foster inquiry, critical thinking, creativity, and civic engagement, through video production with students who are economically and educationally disenfranchised. In addition, the program teaches students to decode, analyze and evaluate media and its messages while empowering them with technical and creative skills to tell their stories and become part of the national media conversation. Trained youth then work on professional projects for Harken Productions, Inc. Grassroots Garage (getvicramos.com) combines education on social justice issues affecting young people today with media development. Participants are challenged to research, identify and brainstorm solutions to community health and economic issues. Youth then present their work to the community through video, radio, and/or other media items. Sinnerman Productions (sinnermenproductions.com). Randy Herrera and Rafael Gutierrez, young entrepreneurs who at the age of 18 and 19 respectively, have already registered an audiovisual production company that is currently working on a variety of films both documentary and dramatic, which they will be sharing with the audience that day. All 3 screenings will be followed by a 20 minute critical issue panel discussion with the youth filmmakers. Please join us for an afternoon that will make you proud of Providence youth! Andrew Raftery (MFA, Yale University School of Art), a printmaker specializing in narrative engravings of contemporary American life, is an associate professor in the department of printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design. Raftery recently received a 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship, and will use the fellowship period to complete an engraving project he's been working on for several years. The works will be exhibited in a solo show at New York City's Mary Ryan Gallery in October. His work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Fogg Art Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery and the New York Public Library. Gretchen L. Following contemporary developments in printmaking The Museum of Modern Art has recently acquired several projects by artists such as Gabriel Orozco, Nicola L?pez, Nicolas Lampert, and Swoon, among others. This presentation will introduce some recent acquisitions of Moma's collection, speak to challenges involved in the display of these artworks, and pursue an investigation of recent trends in printmaking and its impact on art produced in all mediums. These lectures are an exciting part of print month at AS220, celebrating the one year anniversary of Rhode Island's only public community printshop. September's events will culminate in a fundraising Print Lottery featuring 200 prints and works on paper, now on exhibition in the performance space at 115 Empire Street. Part of the story will be available in the Fall edition of the Agenda, and other places in Providence. Combing over what can and cannot be potentially compromising to my case via blog has been quite a chore. This Thursday's slam will be one of the biggest of the season. I will be telling some of the arrest story during the open mic, and our feature, Roger Bonair-Agard, is just about the best in the business. In my opinion, spoken word/performance art doesn't have anything better than Roger. The national performance art movement might have some stuff that reaches that level, but certainly nothing that exceeds him. So... Congratulations! Whether you know it or not, you have helped play an essential role in the growth and success of Rhode Island's ONLY community printshop! We are proud of our accessibility (one of the most affordable printshops in the country!) and want to continue to provide this resource and environment for artists, printmakers and those who are venturing into the new territory of printmaking. We cannot be the kind of community resource that we aspire to be without the support of the community. We need you! The printshop keymembers, AS220 staff and I have worked incredibly hard to put together a fundraiser that would be fun and rewarding for us and you. We could have just flat out asked for money, or closed the printshop until we reached our fundraising goal - BUT NO! Why torture you by denying you the valuable resource of a community printshop? We're not NPR! By now, we hope that you've enjoyed some of the events that we have put together this month in celebration of the Print Lottery. Our last event - the MAIN EVENT, aka the PRINT LOTTERY, if you will - will be this Saturday, September 27th and time is running out to purchase your ticket! We only have about 50 tickets left, so now is your chance to win a work of art that is worth at least $75 or a *whole lot more*!! Not only is this an awesome art buying opportunity, but it is supremely the most helpful thing you can do in support of the printshop. When have you ever felt so good about buying art? All proceeds directly support the printshop. Yep, the printshop that you know and love. THAT printshop! The Print Lottery is made up of 200 works on paper or prints that have been donated by artists or collectors who believe in what we're building and have given their support by giving their work. When the keymembers and I began to plan this event we knew that we wanted the tickets to sell for an amount that would be within the reach of those who use the Printshop regularly. If you are able to purchase a ticket, you can do so at the AS220 Bar after 5pm daily or online www.as220.org/printlottery2008 . I realize these are tough economic times but if you can't swing a ticket, don't forget that you can support the Printshop just by coming here to print your work. Everyone is invited to the Lottery, ticket or no ticket, so come celebrate this Saturday, September 27th, 6-10 pm on Empire Street in the Main Gallery! My thanks for your participation this past year, Morgan P.S. Drink Narragansett Beers this Saturday night and all your dollars will go toward the Printshop!!! ..................................................... We will miss Edith and the positive energy that she brought to the studio. While still grieving the very recent loss of their daughter, Edith's parents are in the middle of transitioning into a new apartment and are still trying to cover the various expenses of moving and burial services. The Broad Street Studio youth and staff are raising money to purchase a head stone for Edith. Whether financially or otherwise, it is important that we make the utmost attempt to aid the Vargas family in their recovery from this tragedy. More than ever before, this is a time in which we are called to stand strong as the community that we are here at AS220 and join forces together to provide support for the Edith's relatives. There is a jar on the bar on 115 Empire where cash donations can be made. Donations in forms of a check can be written to Odilo Vargas and mailed to the following address: Odilo Vargas 484 Plainfield Ave. 3rd Floor Providence, RI 02909 -- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Stephanie McGuinness Community Resource Liason AS220 Broad Street Studio 115 Empire Street 2nd Floor Providence, Rhode Island 02903 401.467.0701 401.451.9300 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Action Speaks looks at contemporary issues through the lens of history by using underappreciated dates of the twentieth-century that have changed America. Join host Marc Joel Levitt and guest panelists for some old-fashioned community exchange in the heart of downtown Providence?s arts and cultural district. What?s race got to do with it? The 2008 season of Action Speaks will explore the meaning of race in our contemporary American society. The theme is inspired by the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities? On The Road to Freedom initiative, which marks the bicentennial of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade and celebrates the accomplishments made by individuals and organizations of African-American descent in Rhode Island. Four evenings of Community Forums will take place at AS220's 115 Empire St. Location from 5:30-7:00 pm and will also be broadcast via WRNI. Relevant documentaries will be aired on your Rhode Island PBS channel throughout the conference including "HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhythms", "Crossing the Line: Multiracial Comedians" and the three part series "Our Genes, Our Choices". 1910 - Racist biologist Charles Davenport creates the Eugenic Record Office at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. An American prelude to Hitler or to the Human Genome Project...perhaps both? Wed, October 1 Eugenics was a global movement popular in the United States at the turn of the last century. Proponents believed that knowledge about hereditary genetics could be used to cultivate better human beings. They promoted ideas like ?fitter family? contests, government- supported sterilization, and laws prohibiting anyone who was ?epileptic, imbecile or feeble-minded? from marrying. Eugenicists were suspicious of groups they feared posed a threat to the purity of the native-born stock. Bad people, right? Not so fast. Although eugenics inspired some of Hitler?s most deplorable actions, many progressives, religious leaders, and academics initially endorsed the movement. In the past though, right? Again, not so easy...how about our current interest in using gene technology to make decisions about who should and shouldn?t be born? Isn?t this a form of engineering the future? Eugenics in the context of history, science, culture, religion, philosophy, and politics--the idea of normative and links to today's search for genetic perfection. Featured Guests: Lundy Braun, Associate Professor of Africana Studies, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Brown University. Braun?s research focus includes the history of the global circulation of knowledge about race and technology in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as, race, genomics, and health inequality. Wendy Kline, Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Cincinnati. Kline is the author of Building a Better Race: Gender, Sexuality, and Eugenics from the Turn of the Century to the Baby Boom Diane B. Paul, Professor Emerita in the Political Science Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where she directed the interdisciplinary program in Science, Technology, and Values. 1920 Prolific African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux releases Within Our Gates Hollywood, race films and the production of African-American cinematic images Wed, October 15 Oscar Micheaux is considered the most prolific Black filmmaker in the history of American cinema...he made forty-four feature-length films between 1919 and 1948. Micheaux founded his own production company in 1918 to produce the film version of his 1917 novel, The Homesteader. It became the first full-length feature film directed, written and produced by an African-American. With his fifth movie, "Within Our Gates," Micheaux attacked the racism portrayed in the most highly acclaimed silent movie of all time, D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation." In it, Micheaux used the same lighting, blocking, and setting as Griffith to question Grifith?s racist portrayal of Blacks. His films offered audiences a radical departure from the 1930?s Hollywood portrayal of Blacks as servants and brought diverse images of ghetto life and related social issues to the screen for the first time. We will discuss African-American representation in film yesterday and today -- how does race play a role in films and entertainment? Event includes 6:30pm special screening at Providence Public Library Auditorium of Oscar Micheaux?s ?Within Our Gates? Featured Guests: Charles Musser, Professor of Film Studies and American Studies; Co- Chair, Film Studies Program; and, Director of Summer Film Institute, Yale University. Musser authored several books on the early history of American cinema. He co-edited Oscar Micheaux and His Circle: African American Filmmaking and Race Cinema of the Silent Era (2001) with Jane Gaines and Pearl Bowser. Terri Francis, Assistant Professor, Film Studies, African American Studies, Yale University. Francis? specializes in the history and aesthetics of African Diaspora cinema, literature, and culture. Her current work is concerned with race, gender and cinema. Don Mays, Assistant Director, Intercultural Studies, Roger Williams University. The Rhode Island-based independent filmmaker?s most recent documentary explores the history of the first Black regiment of soldiers who fought in America?s Revolutionary War. 1957 Dissent magazine publishes Norman Mailer's ?The White Negro: Superficial Reflections on the Hipster? What's Black? What's White? What's Italian? What's Jewish? Are race and ethnicity a dance anyone can learn? Wed, October 22 This essay by Norman Mailer recorded a wave of young white people in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s who liked jazz and swing music so much that they adopted Black culture as their own. It was first published in the Fall 1957 issue of Dissent, and was later reprinted in Advertisements for Myself in 1959. Mailer?s so-called ?white negroes? were White American male bohemians who enshrouded themselves in Black clothing styles, language, and music while distancing themselves from White society. This movement influenced the hipsters of the 1940s, the beats of the 1950s, the mods of the 1960s, and the wigger of later decades. What is the connection between race music and dance -- including contemporary hip-hop culture -- to the music and dance of the White mainstream? We will discuss the way marginalized cultures often become models for those alienated from the culture at large and how Black culture has been stereotyped and altered in the service of others. Featured Guests: Joe Beats is a sampled based producer and performer from Rhode Island. His production credits are listed under many like aliases: Joey Beats, The Joe Beats Experiment, The Joe Beats Conspiracy, The Joe Beats Trio, Joey "Nose" Beats, Joe Beats & Blak, Non-Prophets, and others. John Gennari, Associate Professor of English & Director, ALANA U.S. Ethnic Studies Program, University of Vermont. ALANA is an interdisciplinary program focused on the study of cultures, values, historical and contemporary issues relating to African Americans, Latinos/as, Asian Americans and Native Americans. Gennari?s work focuses on race and ethnic studies in literary and cultural studies. Greg Tate, essayist, cultural critic, and longtime Village Voice journalist. Author of Everything But The Burden, Tate?s work explores the reaction and implications of White appropriation of African- American culture. 2000 The U.S. Census allows individuals to identify themselves as mixed-race Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, and their American stories -- how checking multiple boxes on a survey helped redefine race in America Wed, October 29 For the first time, citizens of the United States were not asked to define themselves by checking a single ethnic box in the census. In all of the census counts through 1990, an individual's race was supposed to be indicated by checking only one of the boxes presumed to correspond to the main social racial categories. Thus, there was no allowance made for multiracial identification, although the category "other" was recognized in the 1980 and 1990 census and on many local record-keeping forms. Advocates worked throughout the 1990s to rescind this ?one box? policy. This change will lead to a discussion of the demographics of hybridization and the hybridization of demographics at the turn of the 21st century in the U.S. and in the world. We will also look at the concept of race as a construct and the notion of racial purity. Featured Guests: Teja Arboleda, filmmaker, television producer, director, writer and entertainer and Entertaining Diversity, Inc. Arboleda?s documentary ?Crossing The Line: Multiracial Comedians? looks at the relationship between humor and race. Noel Igantiev, professor of American history at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He is author of How the Irish Became White. Kimberly McClain DaCosta, Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies and Professor of Social Studies, Department of African and African American Studies, Harvard University. Her book Making Multiracials: State, Family and Market in the Redrawing of the Color Line examines how multiracialism emerged as a topic of public discussion in the last quarter century, and how ?multiracial? became a recognizable social category and mode of identification. Maureen T. Reddy, Department of English, Rhode Island College. She has written extensively about race. Her books include Traces, Codes, and Clues: Reading Race in Crime Fiction, Crossing the Color Line: Race, Parenting, and Culture, and Traces, Codes and Clues: Reading Race in Crime Fiction. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
