Message-ID: <481B8CFD.7070409@as220.org> MAY DAY! MAY DAY! This is it! Prepare yourselves for the coming of Armageddon! OK, don't freak out yet. Armageddon, the most amazing record shop in Providence, is just rolling heavy this week with shows at AS220. On Saturday they present, not one, but TWO shows featuring Tragedy, Systematic Death and Dropdead. If you're not one of the lucky punks who got tickets to the night show before it was sold out in like three seconds, you can still come to the earlier one. And that's not all. Armageddon presents another international line-up next Thursday with Hard Skin, Invasion and White Load. Oi! Take a break from the oncoming apocalyptic catastrophy on Sunday with our gallery opening and, later on, a radical all-girl show. The New Bloods, hailing from Portland off of Kill Rock Stars, play with Providence's own Baba Yaga in a short, but severe late night show. So stop worrying and learn to love it, just get your butt over to AS220 and turn the end times into good times. Chl?e P.S.- Check out the sidebar for the new playlist for the month of May! Message-ID: <642C39B3-0AC8-419E-A0AA-756EA11448A5@as220.org> Hey Gang, I'm going back to the basic text email this week for a quickie events reminder. Nothing should be more basic than justice for everyone and this coming week, we have a series of events hosted by 1000lbs Guerilla designed to question the state of justice in our society. Justice or Just Us? will be kicking off next Monday with a talk by Front Line Drug Warrior Tony Papa and will continue with events throughout the week. I encourage you all to come out and be challenged, inspired, or outraged -- no matter what, you'll be entertained. Other stuff you won't want to miss: If you like your Friday nights sweet, look no further. The lovely Larkin Grimm is back in town and ready to woo you with her enchanting and mystical songs tonight along with Drew Danburry and John McCauley AKA Deertick. Saturday night, don't miss a dreamy acid rock show by Indian Jewelry, Libythth, Phthalocyanine, and Bronhard/Going/Public. No one will bat an eye if you decide to wear face paint tonight. Get yourself in gear at the bike swap the next day. It might be rainy outside, but before you know it, you're gonna wish you had that bright pink cruiser. Ok, that's all for now. Be well. Free! 9 pm Indian Jewelry, Libythth, Phthalocyanine, and Bronhard/Going/Public Indian Jewelry: dreaming strong, getting strong, being strong, thinking strong, acting strong, no, scratch that, acting tough. Libythth is a one person electronica extravaganza from Los Angeles. Its synths and computers magically play themselves while frontman Qrqyt Ixoteptek kicks out the freaked broken dance beats on a compact MIDI drum kit and controls effects by playing an infrared unit with the movement of his head. The music itself falls somewhere between hardcore gabber techno and silly electro-pop from some unknown decade later in this century, most likely the 2010's or 2020's. Bronhard/Going/Public is an electronic improv trio that has played AS220 a number of times and features members of Suffering Bastard and the White Mice. Booty bass, gabber, italo disco, dubstep, power electronics and cosmic synth jams crudely vomited out into a steaming heap of timestretched, pitchshifted grooves. Dimitri Fergadis, founder of the Los Angeles-based electronic/noise label Phthalo and mastermind behind Phthalocyanine, was the first American artist to be represented on the stellar German experimental label, A-Musik. His first single was released on Plug Research, the one American label whose output will soon rival sultan-of-the scene, Warp. The microtonal glitch stable, Mille Plateaux, called Fergadis in for remix work on Crank's Wanton Phenomena and Richie Hawtin's buddy Vapourspace (aka Mark Gage) did the same for his "Steam" single. After Planet ? founder Mike Paradinas called Fergadis "a genius," that label released Phthalocyanine's "25 Tracks Fer 1Track" and "No One Said You Didn't" albums. http://www.myspace.com/indianjewelry http://www.myspace.com/ phthalocyanine http://www.myspace.com/libythth $7 Sunday, May 11, 2008 .12 - 5 pm Bike Swap! Spring is here and the blossoms have bloomed and the trees have leaves and you know what that means: get greasy and get yer bike on the road, and if you don?t have a bike, get one to show everyone how cool and eco conscious you really are. The bike swap is thee best place to get ready to ride. Find the stuff yer looking for cheep! or just come for the espresso! Always a good time to lie about how fast you, the pedigree of your new bike project or how much you hate cars. Free! 6-8pm SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND is a totally acoustic (no PA) showcasing of the songwriting craft. On the second Sunday of each month at AS220, host Ryan Fitzsimmons will find three songwriters to join him in sharing their work and writing a new song on a theme specifically for the event. The show will run from 6pm to 8pm, and include 4 rounds of original songs. Roughly a month before the show, each writer scheduled will be given a common theme to write on, and they will be expected to perform this new, original song in the third round. This provides the rare opportunity to see 4 separate writers perspectives on the same subject matter. Besides Ryan, two other writers from the Rhode Island Songwriter Association (RISA) will join him each month. A third spot will be open anyone, not just RISA members. Anyone interested in performing should email Ryan: songwriters [at] ryanfitzsimmons [dot] com.
