A group of local artists has come together to organize a multi-media art exhibition opening in Pawtucket called ?Experiencing the War in Iraq.? The aim of the exhibition is to give a human face to the complex conflict in Iraq, to bring together diverse expressions of individual experience and to reconnect those who have unconsciously cocooned themselves from the grim reality of the war. Through the language of art, the exhibition seeks to transcend the limitations of mainstream media coverage and engage the public in a broad-based dialogue that promotes awareness, understanding, and healing. The exhibition will include work from both soldiers and civilians that utilizes video, audio, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and the written word. 600 entries were received from around the planet, including the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and South America, as well as close to home. 70 works of art were selected purely on artistic merit, to include as many perspectives as possible, beyond politics. The show will open on March 6th, 2008 simultaneously in the Arts Exchange (Pawtucket Armory) and Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket. There will be related screenings and performances at the Slater Mill Theatre, and Mixed Magic Theatre, as well as AS220 and the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, RI. A vigil with candlelight procession, music, theatre, and spoken word performances is scheduled for March 19th to mark the fifth anniversary of the start of the War. For more information, please go to: http://reconnectus.org/ http//reconnectus.org Free 6-8pm SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND is a totally acoustic (no PA) showcasing of the songwriting craft. On the second Sunday of each month at AS220, host Ryan Fitzsimmons will find three songwriters to join him in sharing their work and writing a new song on a theme specifically for the event. The show will run from 6pm to 8pm, and include 4 rounds of original songs. Roughly a month before the show, each writer scheduled will be given a common theme to write on, and they will be expected to perform this new, original song in the third round. This provides the rare opportunity to see 4 separate writers perspectives on the same subject matter. Besides Ryan, two other writers from the Rhode Island Songwriter Association (RISA) will join him each month. A third spot will be open anyone, not just RISA members. Anyone interested in performing should email Ryan: songwriters [at] ryanfitzsimmons [dot] com. Contempt For Humanity(RI) Blank Stare(Boston) + TBC review by Al Quint/Suburban Voice: LOST CAUSE-Kill What?s Inside (Love The Music Hate The Scene, 12? EP) There have been many bands called Lost Cause over the years and I almost think their label name, Love The Music Hate The Scene, would be a cooler band moniker. This band is from Philly and includes Ned, who has logged time as the vocalist for Balance of Terror, Sangre De LosPuercos and Endless Nightmare and could be one of the tallest frontmen in punk. Other bands on the resume for the various members include AOS,Violation and Witch Hunt. That should give you a fairly good indication that this is loud, aggressive music. There?s definitely a Scandinavian bent in the band?s approach but also some Poison Idea inspiration, the latter coming from the guitar sound and delivery. Ned?s hoarse voice effectively conveys the words of rage. ?Through The Cracks,? about people lacking health insurance, is timely in light of the fact that Bush has vetoed an expansion of health care coverage for children. It?s always a good sign when the record ends and you crave more. I?ve played it through two times while writing this review. from the No Way Records website: LOST CAUSE-Kill What?s Inside (Love The Music Hate The Scene, 12? EP) Ripping HC from Philadelphia. Defiently one of the best coming from there right now. This has a strong Poison Idea vibe going on, butblended with killer Japanese and Swedish HC. Tuff as nails, we've gotsome pummeling jammers here with strong ferocious riffs and vocals witha heavy backbone of well played drums and bass. Something you can definetly pump your fist or ride your horse to! Lim. to 300 for the first press. Self Released. They comprise Finnish-English vocalist Hanna Tuulikki (vocals, kantele, flute), Aby Vulliamy (viola) and Chris Hladowski (bouzouki, clarinet). Nalle combine improvisational song structures with unusual instrumentation, sometimes with a decidedly Celtic influence. Tuulikki's vocals have been compared to those of Joanna Newsom and Bjork. All three band mambers have also been involved with Scatter (Pickled Egg). Additionally, Aby Vulliamy and Chris Hladowski are members of The One Ensemble [Of Daniel Padden] (Secret Eye, Brainwashed), which also shares members with Volcano The Bear. Nalle have been playing together since summer 2004. The debut album "By Chance Upon Waking" is available on Pickled Egg. A collaboration with the One Ensemble (Secret Eye) is also in the process of being mixed by Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust. The most recent Nalle album was released on Locust Music of Chicago. "Everything comes together on Nalle's debut to produce some of the best music I've heard in years. The instrumentation is wonderful and Tuulikki's voice, which falls somewhere between Bjork and Austria's Gustav, are absolute perfection. I can't get over just how amazing this record is. Nalle's debut is easily the best thing I've heard in 2006 thusfar, and I reckon it's going to be hard for anything to come close to it. The highest of recommendations." Free! 9pm Stefan Couture Trio, Christopher Bell, Talking About Commas, and Keith Brynes STEFAN COUTURE (from Slatersville RI) is no stranger to the acoustic scene of the bars, clubs and coffee houses of the northeast and beyond. He got is start like many local singer/songwriters before him, by busking on the subway platforms of Boston, MA...working his way up and down the red line and getting his feet wet as a performer choppin' out tunes on the cobblestone streets of Harvard Square. During this time Stefan recorded his full length album, Great Big Somewhere and toured relentlessly throughout the Northeast as a troubadour and also pulled off two west coast tours up and down the pacific coast line. With his soulful voice and timeless songwriting skills, Stefan chugged along gaining a grass roots fan base one show at a time. After a year and a half of performing solo, he had a strong urge to put a band together and take his music to another level. Talking about commas is a witty, poetic hopeful who rants about injustice and loves story telling. Keith Brynes is an energetic singer songwriter. Talking about commas rants about social injustice, and launching a peaceful revolution. http://www.myspace.com/stefancouturetrio http:// www.talkingaboutcommas.com $6 Monday, March 31, 2008 9pm Private Film Screening private Tuesday, April 1, 2008 6-9pm Life Drawing Come and draw from a live model. $6 10pm UM: Jazz with Hal Crook, Bob Gullotti, Dave Zinno and Leo Genovese JAZZ NIGHT AT AS220 - THE FIRST TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH! DC401 meetings are open to anyone, regardless of their skill, age, job, gender, etc. DC401 is here to help you learn new things, meet new people, mentor others in areas you may be strong in, and provide some cohesion within the hacker culture and it's members. For more information, visit http://dc401.org or email dcg401 {at} gmail {dot} com http://dc401.org FREE 9 pm Health, Triangle Forest, Makeupbreakup and Dinowalrus "Dinowalrus is a three-person drum n' drone band out of Brooklyn, NY. Its current live incarnation began 2006, when multi-instrumentalists Pete and Kyle met while simultaneously attempting to stalk Andrew WK at a 'To Live and Shave in LA' show in a Bushwick industrial park. As an experimental noise/glam recording project, it goes back to 2003. Josh the drummer joined in 2007, fresh off the boat from his native Belgium. In an attempt to capture some of the spontaneity of their improvisational instincts, retain the complex spatiality of their recorded experiments, and transcend the limited sonic palette that plagues most three-piece bands, Dinowalrus re-invents its instrumentation with every song. Some tunes feature dueling Lee n' Thurston guitar interplay between Pete and Kyle, some feature Kyle frantically playing the bass, sampler and synthesizer simultaneously, and others revolve around Josh drumming toe-to-toe with a booty- licious electronic beat. The band relies heavily on the use of self- sustaining electronic devices to push its sound into cosmic brain- melting freakouts, jangly atmospheric haze, and/or juvenile twee- skronk. These devices include an optical theremin, a sampler, and a 1983 Roland analogue synth named Marc Bolan." Triangle Forest is Mind-To-Ass Blowing Beats! The origin of MakeUpBreakup can be traced back to the winter of 2006 and illicit phone conversations between Alexander Laorenza and Mikeylams, both founding members of post-punk-indie-sex-pots A Trillion Barnacle Lapse (Level-Plane Records, Nova Recordings, Sound- Virus, The Electric Human Project , Release the Bats). These prophetic diatribes took place during Alexander?s Los Angeles days, where he made cash writing for a Hip Hop website and played with a myriad of musicians in desperate need of rehab. www.myspace.com/ dinowalrus www.myspace.com/triangleforest http://www.myspace.com/ makeupbreakup $8 Thursday, April 3, 2008 8pm Free Speech Thursdays at AS220 featuring: Providence Poetry Slam On THURSDAYS at AS220, FREE SPEECH is in full effect with a weekly program of SPOKEN WORD OPEN MICS, POETRY SLAMS, YOUTH SLAMS, HIP-HOP - OPEN MIC SHOWCASE (on 2nd Thursdays), MUSICIAN OPEN MICS, and so on and so forth.
