Message-ID: <5F066843-A42D-43A5-A8E1-69848FFA1CA7@as220.org> Ah, yes...the week before Valentine's Day and the smell of love is in the air...oh, wait, Arley just took her shoes off. Never mind. Well, at least you know that we have all the love you need here at AS220 and you can show us some sugar by coming down and checking out all the sweet stuff we have going on this week! Tomorrow night, soak in the folky goodness of Viking Moses, Golden Ghost and Meghan Yates who will serenade you into a happy state of being. Brendon Massei is Viking Moses and he's the real deal bohemian traveller, always on the road with the songs to prove it. Better catch him now as he kicks off another tour from AS220. You'll be glad you started the weekend with a chill night once Saturday rolls along and you're dancing like crazy to Mahi Mahi, Team Robespierre and LLove. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: a two-man dance inferno, Brooklyn "New Punk" and local electronic beats are gonna make you shake your money maker all night long. Lots more throughout the week, including local indie rock and a Ron Paul Liberty Ball with some local Libertarian bands, Welldown and The Propellers! Yeah, election season! P.S. - Sorry if you felt manipulated into reading this email by the subject header. On the second Sunday of each month at AS220, host Ryan Fitzsimmons will find three songwriters to join him in sharing their work and writing a new song on a theme specifically for the event. The show will run from 6pm to 8pm, and include 4 rounds of original songs. Roughly a month before the show, each writer scheduled will be given a common theme to write on, and they will be expected to perform this new, original song in the third round. This provides the rare opportunity to see 4 separate writers perspectives on the same subject matter. Besides Ryan, two other writers from the Rhode Island Songwriter Association (RISA) will join him each month. A third spot will be open anyone, not just RISA members. Anyone interested in performing should email Ryan: songwriters [at] ryanfitzsimmons [dot] com. Does anyone have a hot tub or a sauna they want to donate to the AS220 Mental Health Fund? Anyways, enough questions, I'm here to tell you about the wild and wonderful events we have coming up this week. Didn?t have a sweetheart for Valentine?s Day? Whatever, dude. A true rocker would never follow something made up by a greeting card company anyways. Come to AS220 tomorrow night for the Post Valentine?s Day Punk Rock Prom featuring The Bee Team, White Load, Springbreak!NorthKorea, CP and the Burritos and the Anarchy in Motion Dance Troupe. Make sure you shine your shoulder studs, semi-formal attire is required. Sunday night is the Neptune record release show, so you know it's going to be weird. Neptune, from Boston, make rough and noisy music with concocted and modified instruments with parts found in the trash. The rest of the line-up is a who's who of Providence - White Mice, a three-mouse noise band, Lazy Magnet, one-mind, multi-player whirlwind and The Glass Shivers, an illusionary electronic acoustic music project. Come meet February's Artist-In-Residence, Nick Fox-Gieg as he shows off some of his work next Wednesday night post-Geek Dinner. He's a really talented dude with lots of short films and technology up his sleeve. Check out his website: http://www.fox-gieg.com! That's all for now, catch ya next week! An accomplished singer/songwriter in his own right--- one whose list of collaborators and company on the road reads like a who's who of independent music--- Chris also plays drums for the greatest currently active band on Touch & Go Records, The New Year. Way back in the 1990s Chris played in the bands Come and Codeine. But more noteworthy still-- before all of this, Chris played drums for G.G. Allin. Yes, _that_ G.G. Allin. Chris' "early period" drumming talents can be heard on the Eighties punk opus "Expose Yourself to Kids". (Never owned this record, but reportedly the band photo is solid gold.) That anyone played with G.G. Allin is amusing, but the fact that Chris and G.G. played together is too good to be true. Why? Well, for those who don't know, Chris is one of the nicest people on this swollen planet. Almost saintly, this man. Practically notorious for being an all-around "good guy." Even more likable than Ben McOsker. So the fact that Chris and G.G. Allin, a man not exactly known for upholding decorum, got along and played in the same band together? That's beautiful. Pure poetry. Big glistening tears as I write this. Anyway, Chris is a skilled and seasoned guitarist, with an awesome voice and a tasteful ear. His music, despite its unassuming nature, makes all too many singer/songwriters' seem trivial and affected by comparison. Chris Brokaw is the real deal. It's an honor to have him back." http://www.myspace.com/ holymountainri http://www.chrisbrokaw.com/ $6 Monday, February 25, 2008 9pm Whitey and The Anti-Babies Anti-Babies is a punk rock/dork rock band singing songs about dungeons and dragons, star wars, and other such things! GOOD OLD FASHIONED PUNK http://www.myspace.com/whiteyrocks $5 Tuesday, February 26, 2008 6-9pm Life Drawing Come and draw from a live model. $6 10pm Film Screening: I Pity The Fool I PITY THE FOOL (USA, 2007) 85 min., Super-8 Feature. In 2005, in an effort to improve its image for the nationwide attention brought to the city by the hosting of the 2006 Super Bowl, the city of Detroit began demolishing long-vacant buildings, hastening the natural slow decay caused by decades of industrial collapse. As the city dismantles itself, clues to its past resurface. Collections of scraps sifted from rubble???an archeology of unanswered questions???combine to tell a surrogate narrative filled with missing pieces and forgotten motives, old letters, photographs, and home movies. Fractured moments occurring on one summer day, maybe two, echo events from thirty years earlier. The day is sunny, but it is humid, and clouds are gathering. It is going to rain. The film functions as an exploration of the narrative form, eschewing standard narrative devices of plot and character development in favor of a perhaps subtler means of storytelling, a participatory cinema experience in which the viewer is required to fill in details only hinted at by occurrences on screen. "Like the pieces of a puzzle, I PITY THE FOOL gradually accrues more elements as it goes on: fragments of narrative combine with other fragments that at first have no obvious connection. As opposed to story-lines in many feature-length films that gradually tie up and resolve their different threads, the focus of the film continues to broaden and expand, becoming more complex, open-ended and mysterious. Undertaking a kind of archaeological search for things nearly recent and long past, the film attempts to re-capture the marginalized and defiantly minor histories of its forgotten tenants." -Luke Sieczek, Northwest Film Forum FREE Wednesday, February 27, 2008 8pm The Theorist, Andrew Brown Andrew Brown is a self described singer/songwriter/wierdo. His favorite video game system is SNES. His piano-driven songs cover such fun topics as robot invasion, terminal illness, and one night stands. He uses the jazz/fusion group "Electrio" as his backup band. The Theorists is a group consisting of most the members from the now defunct prog-rock band "Of the Hour." The group is lead by Dave Witham, who has just come out of a 2 year hibernation. Spend your extra day of February getting baby's mama's grandmama's groove back at the local Hip Hop Showcase hosted by 19NINTY7. Admit it, that was a good year. Then, March comes in like a lion with a whole lotta awesome! Hob nob with the artists, art lovers and members of the mooch circuit on Sunday during the gallery openings. Together, the noise of these dudes rules the eastern crust of this place we call America. I'll leave you with a hot tip for looking good this month -- hang out at AS220, where the art's aura and the bar's lighting always flatters. Drummer Michael Cyr and guitarist Dennis Kelly and violinist Dylan Dean have all expressed interest in attending this event and perhaps playing as well. Samuel James (Portland, ME) is like a time machine, a performer of stunningly singular talent. A master of fingerstyle, slide, banjo, harmonica, and piano, this phenom is not yet out of his twenties. With musical influences ranging from Skip James and Sonny Terry to Gus Cannon and Charley Patton, such understanding of pre-war blues is rarely embodied in the music of one person. Elizabeth Butters (Boston, MA) will be performing pre-war folk blues and cowboy ballads on the Appalachian dulcimer and guitar in dignified and authentic attire.
