From The Curb

Submitted by Geoff on 3-5-01.

Growing up in Maine, brothers Alec and Joel Thibodeau sang and played music together from grade school onward. The two formed "String Builder" in 1996 as an experiment in home recording. After a series of well-received shows and local Maine radio attention, String Builder grew restless for a new habitat.
The band left the Pine Tree State in 1997 and settled into Rhode Island's capitol, Providence. In December 1999, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts awarded String Builder a project grant to complete the From the Curb exhibit. This exhibit features photographic screenprints, travel writing and audio recordings, and will be at AS220 through June 30. From the Curb was a two-month, cross-country journey taken on Greyhound buses in the spring of 1999 by Alec and Joel Thibodeau. Their goal was to explore a larger piece of America by performing in public and asking people the question, It's 1999, What is American Culture? Some believed a computer glich would spell disaster for America. Others were convinced the status quo would survive, permitting America to keep exporting cultural icons like MTV and Hollywood. Rather than speculate on the future, Alec and Joel Thibodeau used From the Curb to address contemporary American culture through first hand experience.
