AS220 Media Arts

The AS220 Industries are our earned-income approach to community building through expanded access to resources and affordable education. AS220 currently houses three Industries: AS220 Labs, AS220 Media Arts, and the AS220 Printshop. By providing access to studio space, tools of the trade, and varied training opportunities, the AS220 Industries foster a diverse and dynamic environment for learning, creating, and sharing.

Since August 1994, when the Paul Krot Darkroom was established at 115 Empire Street, AS220’s photography programs have grown to embrace both digital and traditional B&W photography, added studio lighting, and camera rentals, as well as resources for photo finishing, digital editing and large-format printing.  We introduced educational offerings to support the use of these new resources. In 2012, we began to expand the photography program into a Media Arts program supporting complementary analog and digital mediums such as film, video, audio, and computer/web applications.  AS220 currently provides affordable access to graphics software at the Media Arts Lab, and is planning a gradual expansion into new media as resources allow.

If you would like to support the expansion of AS220 Media Arts, please contact Program Manager, Chris Anderson, chris@as220.org.

If you wish to give online to support the expansion of resources at the Media Arts Lab, you may do so at our secure donation page.

& the Paul Krot Community Darkroom

Our darkrooms began in August 1994 when recent college graduates Pam Murray and Scott Lapham found themselves suddenly without access to darkroom facilities and helped fill the gap by joining forces with AS220 to create a community darkroom in downtown Providence.

Since then the Paul Krot Community Darkrooms have helped hundreds of photographers practice their craft and have introduced hundreds more to the art of traditional B&W film photography.
