Overview

Schematics are a pictorial way of describing a circuit and all the parts that make up the circuit. It's like a simple language of symbols. This page outlines a number of schematics that we will use in class.

Schematic Symbols

Like any language, it comes it two parts: first recognizing the symbol and the knowing what that symbol means. A nice list of almost every schematic symbol you might come across can be found here

Resistors

Resistors can be wired in series or in parallel. We're going to try them both and learn how these two circuits work.

LEDs

LEDs are electronics components that light up when activated correctly. They are real basic components that can be connected to lots of different circuits. They can be used as indicators of specific states of those circuits.

Here is a nice basic description of LEDs.

Specifically, we will look at the most basic LED circuit.

555 Chips

LM555 chips are really cool timer chips with TONS of uses. You can find a nice tutorial here.

Specifically, we will be making: Astable and monostable timers

Astable Timer

ASTABLE timers are timers which just continuously oscillate at a specified rate.

Monostable Timer

MONOSTABLE timers are timers which generate a single pulse. They can be used as a trigger to do other things.
