As always, for first-timers here are the details on the Geek Dinners:

  • The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant.
  • Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 30 min presentation/q&a around 6:30pm. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking…
  • It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whoever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great)
  • Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about AJAX, mash-ups, start-ups, new devices, innovative business models, interaction design, social computing, digital art, web services, etc. etc. etc.
  • There is Wi-Fi so bring your connected device of choice.
Open Level Modern Dance @ 95 Empire Dance Studio
6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Modern Dance For Every Level with Jamie Arnold and Stephanie Turner // Wednesdays @ 6:30-8pm // $13 per class; $60 for 6 classes

Class begins with a warm-up that incorporates yoga and breathwork with gentle movements of the spine before moving on to phrase material. A series of short phrases will then be explored, where students are encouraged to play and experiment with how his/her individual body prefers to move through the demonstrated movements. The phrases include elements like directional changes, movement through space, spirals, rotation, lines, momentum, energy and floorwork. Movement may carry over from previous classes and blend into the dance material. Each phrase that is developed will lead to a rich and colorful dance toward the end of class.  Jamie Arnold is a certified and licensed Kripalu Yoga guide and dancer working out of Warwick RI and graduate of Rhode Island College with a B.A. in Dance Performance, where she was a member of the Rhode Island College Dance Company. Jamie attended the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC and was in residency at The Dragon’s Egg Studio in Ledyard, CT and has performed in Trisha Brown’s Floor of the Forest at the ICA in Boston and Between Movement Contemporary Dance Company.

Detroit-born, Brooklyn-based artist Cooper Holoweski’s video work has been praised by Art in America as “infinitely watchable.” His ‘Katabasis‘ is a 40-minute video landscape with live sound accompaniment that moves the viewer though an elaborately constructed virtual junkyard to explore the themes of death, limbo, and rebirth. In various world mythologies “Katabasis” refers to a trip to the underworld. The journey of Odysseus through Hades and the death and resurrection of Lazarus are classic examples of Katabasis. Together with the live performance of an evolving musical score, it creates multi-sensory experiences that exemplify the tense liminal space of ‘Katabasis.’ The score is a collage of improvised instrumentation, field recordings, and audio loops that form a densely layered soundscape for each movement.

Artist Talk with Viera Levitt @ AS220 Project Space
5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
BRUTALLY SWEET: New Photographs by Viera Levitt
AS220 Project Space, 93 Mathewson St., Providence, RI, June 1-29, 2013

Artist talk: Thursday June 20, 5.30-7 pm

With her photographic exploration of Brutalism, Viera Levitt reveals the hidden beauty and indeed ‘sweetness’ of this architectural style often derided as gray, crude, soulless and austere. Following on the heals of her solo show “Beauty in the Beast: Photography of Brutalist Architecture” up last summer at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield, Viera continues to capture these 1960s and 1970s buildings with their stark geometric sculptural forms and heroic monumentality. Her ‘subjects’, located in both New England as well as in her native Slovakia share not only architectural similarities, but also the utopian impulse that ran through both sides of the ‘Iron Curtain’.
