This Saturday ring in the New Years with AS220 and Bright Night! As always Bright Night has organized tons of events at a handful of downtown venues http://www.brightnight.org/schedule.html and AS220 is among them once again. Between 6pm-10pm, 115 Empire St will host Bright Night performances including: comedy by Nick Albanese and Matt the Knife, performances by Mentalist Rory Raven, and a poetry slam. Bright Night passes are $20 and include admission to the long list of New Years Happenings - including our very own New Year's Party that kicks off at 10:30pm. No Bright Night Pass? Admission is just $5 to welcome 2012 at AS220 amidst the classic celebratory sounds of a brass band, Extraordinary Rendition Band. Classic punk and pop, dance-inspiring sounds from Ravi Shavi and 1980's era Synth-Pop inspired The Kolour Kult join ERB. This evenings bill comes with a guarantee you will be psyched when the big 12:00 arrives!

AS220's Artistic Director has deployed his Mobile Urban Gentrification Unit to Burnside Park today. Stop by and visit.

Exhibiting artist Li Jun Lai will give an artist talk this Thursday at 5:30 at the AS220 Project Space at 93 Mathewson St. Her new exhibition, " RED, YWL, GRN," is a site-specific installation of paintings and drawings that explore the very temporal and temporary experience that seeing is.
From the Li Jun's artist statement:
"Observe, see, take notes, gather different types of information, at multiple scales, of different durations. Different kinds of seeing - looking, glancing, contemplating, foveal and peripheral vision, walking around, going into, looking down, looking up, stepping back afar, peering in closely, from different perspectives. Visual processing - multiple and simultaneous pathways that the brain uses to make sense of sensory stimuli, to construct images and meaning .."

This Wednesday, December 14th from 7- 10 PM at the AS220 Labs (on Lucie Way next to the AS220 Printshop), Labs Keymember, Jenine Bressner will be hosting a screening of Handmade Nation, Faythe Levine's documentary about contemporary DIY craft in the U.S. Locals also featured in this film are The Dirt Palace, and Deb Dormody of general awesomeness (If'n Books and Marks and Craftland.)
The movie is one hour long and will be preceded by a slideshow about FAB7, the fascinating international digital fabrication conference that took place this past August in Peru. The screening will be followed by a conversation about the importance of DIY, and how Fab Labs are facilitating that all over the world!
Snacks and drinks will be provided!A couple weeks back photographer Pete Brook came to AS220 Youth to talk about his prison photography project. Tim Matsui also came along to get footage of Pete during his time at AS220 Youth. Tim is putting together a documentary together about Pete Brook and his project.
While Tim was hanging out in Music Lab on the 2nd floor, he bumped into MC Jamale Fisher. Jamale has been actively participating in the performance program for about a year now. Jamale spit an accapella version of a song he's been working on titled "What If".
Tim was blown away. He liked the song so much that he asked Jamale if he would mind recording the track in the next hour just so he could use it as background music in his upcoming Pete Brook documentary.
This a snippet of a longer track that will be on the new MC Writing
Mixtape which is set to drop December 15 2011.
Last night marked the first workshop of "Build Your Own Audio Amplifier" at the AS220 Labs, an introductory soldering and construction class based around Elliot Clapp's Dirtbomb Amp Design. The workshop provides students with a kit, complete with a circuit board, components, and an enclosure - all of which are assembled by the students.
The kit was entirely design and developed by Labs Keymember, Elliot Clapp. Using both the Milling Machine to prototype the electronics and the Laser Cutter to design the acrylic enclosure. The kit will be developed more and available for sale soon on our online store, and of course there will be more workshop offerings based around the kit, so stay tuned
What can you do with it?
Check out more photos from the workshop...
This all-day workshop, a collaborative effort of the AS220 Lab and Printshop, will introduce the laser cutter as a printmaking tool to experienced and neophyte printmakers. James Rutter, Lab Manager, will spend the morning showing participants how the laser cutter and a software program can be used to prepare acrylic, wood, metal, and other matrix for relief and intaglio printing. After lunch, we will move next door to the Printshop to devote the afternoon to printing the prepared images on the etching press under the guidance of Leigh Waldron-Taylor. This is a great opportunity to learn what the laser cutter can do for you in your work. The Lab will provide acrylic plates. The Printshop will provide printing ink, but participants must bring paper. Registrants will receive a detailed information sheet prior to class. Questions can be directed to Leigh@as220.org, or James@as220.org
