Boo City, Bird Dog, and Tyler James from the Silks
Boo City's influences span the globe to form an organically cohesive sound that reflects their experiences as musicians and people. Rooted in Soul, Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Boo City has created a fresh sound with elements that all listeners can enjoy. Boo City was formed in 2009 as the brainchild of long time friends vocalist Tai Awolaju and guitarist Andrew Moon Bain. Singer/songwriters in their own right, Awolaju and Bain previously played in different projects nationally and in Providence, RI . After a simultaneous performance hiatus they came together and pooled resources to form a musical force to be reckoned with. Joining up with Drummer Carey Bowman and Bass player Harry Milloff, both with whom Awolaju has played with in other outfits, they found a true musical chemistry. Bowman's hard hitting, pocket driven drumming fit perfect with Milloff's funk and blues inspired bass playing. After their initial meetings they realized the potential for more. As a prolific and notable record producer, Bain called in session musicians Frank Moniz (saxophone) and Greyson Farmer (trumpet) to put 'the brass in the Boo'. Steering away from the noise and hardcore sound that has epitomized the Providence rock scene for the last decade, Boo City is a wonderful mix of music styles that merge seamlessly. An intoxicating vocal blend is forged with Tai Awolaju's smokey, sultry voice and Andrew Moon Bain's husky, smooth tone sharing the lead vocal and harmony positions,. The horns add to and enhance the dynamic, creating a soulful melodic sound that Providence has been lacking in recent years. Boo City's music is energetic, tasteful, fun, edgy, whimsical yet serious all at once. This talented group of musicians are on track to embody a new sound of Providence RI and American music.
Bird Dog plays that kind of music you don't hear much of these days. Raw, unprocessed soul and roots music. Our influences are varied. We are inspired by American artists of the late sixties and seventies - Otis, Aretha, Dylan and the Band - as well as old school African, Latin American and Caribbean.
Tyler James from the Silks will be performing a special solo set.
