AWESOME

Caroline.jpg

Over the last month, Devin King and Caroline Picard have been artists in residence at AS220. During that time they have been writing in libraries, conducting interviews and printing books. While they pursue separate artistic practices, they'll have a short reading to commemorate their time in Providence. Chapbooks they made at the AS220 print shop, will be available to peruse and purchase.

Devin King will be reading from his new book, The Resonant Space, a book of poetry that investigates the meeting place between youth culture, object oriented ontology and modernist poetics. Devin King is a writer, a teacher and a musician from Chicago.

Caroline Picard will read from her book, Psycho Dream Factory (Holon Press, 2011)--a collection of short stories that appropriates celebrity figures like paper dolls, colliding Woody Allen and his protege, MJ and Orlan and Dr Dre and the burning man festival. Caroline Picard is the Senior Editor for the Green Lantern Press. She lives in Chicago and writes regularly for Badatsports. The Chronicles of Fortune is a collection of comics depicting the joys and sorrows of an unhappy super hero.

Caroline and Devin will be reading on Thursday, July 28th from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the AS220 Performance Space at 115 Empire St. Free & open to the public.

Both books will be available for $8/ea or $10 for both.

Behind the Foo(d): AS220 Youth Goes Under the Iron Pan

by Anidou Sonogo

Those reality shows sure make cooking appear to be a breeze. But anyone caught near the gaping hole of a sizzling oven knows that cooking is anything but easy - and can be dangerous too.

The Communications crew at AS220 Youth took it upon itself to document the inner workings of a restaurant, precisely to uncover the dynamics of the underbelly of the culinary world. And of course, they did it at our very own Foo(d) Restaurant.

The assignment was simple: each of our reporters had to focus on a specific restaurant section. This is what our investigative journalists found under the iron pan:

Jose Lopez focused on star chef and Foo(d)'s manager, Guy Michaud. His audioslide grasps the perils behind the counter and how the kitchen crew deals with accidents, cranky customers and each other.

Briana Lazala and Anidou Sonogo interviewed counter queen Sarah Quenon to document the work counter clerks perform. They found out that not all is fun and games for these industrious employees.

Raymond Cirino's short but sharp audioslide narrows in on Emmanuel Gook-Nah, Foo(d)'s dishwasher. His piece, "The Dishes' Foo" takes us on a tour of one of the most under appreciated, but necessary tasks of the restaurant.

Through these reporting our journalists hope to communicate how restaurants operate. They too hope that customers will appreciate the hard labor these culinary heroes perform to make those delicious dishes that we enjoy at AS220's Foo(d).

AS220 Youth Documents Community Garden

The AS220 Youth Communications Team visited the Southside Community Landtrust. We were introduced to Skye Hibbard-Swanson, the Landtrust's City-Wide and Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator. Skye talked about the origins of this community garden, the fruits and vegetables grown in here, and how the garden has improved the quality of life of the neighborhood.

The Community Landtrust began in 1981 with the purpose of improving the financial, social and environmental conditions of the area. The community garden helped bring neighbors together. The area became cleaner and people enjoyed owning a piece of their community.

Skye also talked about the many products that grow in here. The workers and volunteers grow tomatoes, mint, raspberries, lettuce and a lot more.

The best aspects of the garden is that people from the neighborhood can come and grow their own food and save money. Also, they can feel closer to their neighbors, which improves their relationship and, in a way, their quality of life.

Our Communications Group produced various slideshows about its experience at the Landtrust, which we hope will educate people about this great place.

Artist Talk, 6:30 this Thursday July 21st at As220's Project Space

Natasha Maria Brooks-Sperduti makes work and play out of exploring real and perceived limitations of embodiement. Her current practice combines daily art and yoga as a way of creating fluidity to foster growth. She uses the motion of her body to make site specific installation and performance. Through photography she collects and shares moments from the world around her. Natasha lives in Providence, Rhode Island. She has shown in New York and London, and holds a degree in studio art from Bard College. Natasha will speak about her work currently on view at AS220, including photographs printed in their new digital print facility.

Refreshing Broad St.

There has been a transformation taking place at Tides Family Services this summer, thanks to AS220 Youth. Kaitlin, is a summer Vista and the coordinator of the Murals team. I had the chance to interview her and she had this to say, "The purpose of this mural, was to give life to the wall."

Being an artist, you want to be able to create something that has a meaning to it. The visuals team felt like they should give people a 'live wall'. A wall, people could look at and say, "Wow, these people really do care."

Take a look at this short photo slide show I created about the changes on Broad st.

Need Letterpress Printed Business Cards?

Print Your Own Business Cards on the Letterpress: Dark Blue ink, $80.00

Monday, July 25th, 6-10pm

Instructor: Colleen Ellse

bizcards-colleen.png

Just started a new business? Have a new logo? Or just time for some new cards? Join 7 other business owners, artist and designers as we bring more letterpress printed business cards to Rhode Island. In this four hour workshop, you will learn how to make a photopolymer plate for the letterpress, ink and adjust the impression on our Vandercook 4 Proof Press. Each participant will leave with a box of 250 freshly printed cards on Pearl White (warm white) Lettra 100% cotton paper by Crane. This workshop will use dark blue ink, see other Business Card class listings for other ink color options.

You will need to submit your design for printing or choose a template a week prior to the class, Wednesday July 20th, email: Colleen Ellse colleen-at-colleenellse.com. Letterpress is suited to fine lines and delicate images. Big flat, solid areas of colors and photographic images can be a challenge for beginners and are not recommended for this class. Please be sure all of your type is 10 points or larger. All designs need to sent with fonts outlined or packaged as an indesign file. If you do not have a design, we have three templates you can choose from for the workshop. Please send an email with the template you would like to use and all of your information as it should be printed (Capitals and hyphens).

Colleen Ellse grew up in a creative family of painters and printers, learning to love the process of making things by hand. In 2004, she graduated from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, receiving a BFA in Graphic Design. Working as a designer for several years at a graphic design studio, she learned the ins and outs of running a small business. Upon discovering letterpress for her own wedding invitations, she soon realized that letterpress was the perfect combination of her two artistic personalities: the creative free-spirit who loves to explore color, texture, and type (a.k.a. the designer), and the meticulous perfectionist when it comes to craft (a.k.a. the printer). She studied under several printers for over two years before launching her own freelance design and letterpress printing services in 2009. Ever respectful of the creative process, she values the importance of thoughtful, quality work, no matter how simple the project or piece.

Salt Drawing Performances

Natasha_SaltDrawing_OneNightStand_1.jpg

Natsha Maria Brooks-Sperduti as part of her exhibition, "Current: exploring embodiment" will be "performing" two salt drawings at the AS220 Project Space. The first is at at noon and then at 5 p.m. Using her breath, Natasha gently blows on grains of salt crystals across a painted circular surface, creating gentle undulations and valleys in the salt. The Salt Drawings are a part of Natasha's on-going series of Elemental Drawings that strive to uncover and reveal the secret fleeting gestures within forms.

The Salt Drawing are at the AS220 Project Space and free and open to the public.
