The Long of It:

Friday, June 10, 2011
9pm / $6
The Universes, The Enthusiastics, Good Citizens, and Rota
The Universes are fronted by Dustin T. Rooney and play far out space anthems in the form of lo-fi garage rock.
The Enthusiastics are a very versatile four piece set, mainly revolving around classic, surf, and alternative rock, but taking inspiration from all sounds.
Good Citizens are a math rock group out of RI. They play fast with high energy. They go back and forth from catchy to harsh riffs, and change time signatures every 3.4 seconds, approximately. Their music is "like putting the triangle block through the square hole."
Rota are a four piece from Newport consisting of 2 guys and 2 girls all 18 years old and below. They play a form of indie/emo/punk that likens to a good mix of Jawbreaker-ish vocals, and a Rainer Maria sound.

This project is made possible through major funding support from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities (RICH), an independent state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. If you would like to read, there is a 3 minute time limit.

9:30pm / $6
Dreamer, Misery Exquisite, and Ian K Cooper
Dreamer is a highly energetic people's band that goes out of it's way to satisfy their fans. Their live show consists of screeching guitar solos, throbbing drums, rockin bass, and 80s style vocal howls. Wearing peacock feather earrings, leather, a fedora, and chains, they take the stage ready to bring the house down.
Misery Exquisite experiments with harmony, dissonance, and genre-blending. They are simple, powerful, and never too far from pop sensibility, and have a catalog that explores quite a bit of territory within ROCK.
Ian K Cooper has been singing in musicals since high school. He is a dramatic rock and roll and bluesy musician. Inspired by dramatic artists such as David Bowie, Queen, the Police, and opera singers like Pavarotti and Joseph Legros. He likes to mix dark and light and takes the audience by surprise with every song.

Songwriters in the Round - A totally acoustic showcase of the songwriting craft
On the second Sunday of each month at AS220, rotating hosts, Ryan Fitzsimmons, Jan Luby, Jim Tata, and Jacob Haller will find three songwriters to join in and share their work, writing a new song on a theme specifically for the event. The show will run from 6pm to 8pm, and includes 4 rounds of original songs. Roughly a month before the show, each writer scheduled is given a common theme to write on, and is expected to perform a new, original song in the third round. This provides the rare opportunity to see 4 separate writers perspectives on the same subject matter. Two additional writers from the Rhode Island Songwriter Association (RISA) join in each month and a third spot is open anyone, not just RISA members. Anyone interested in performing should email jmlurgio@verizon.net

Tor Johnson Presents: Mouth Of Flowers, You Blew It! and Best Practices
Mouth Of Flowers have a new 7" out on Willowtree Records. It sounds like what would happen if Hum & Knapsack had a romantic affair in Olneyville.
You Blew It! is from FL. Something akin to American Football love. Math Punk Twinkle Daddies from Florida. They're all just a little bit fatter than they were last year, due mostly to really killer weekly taco specials.
Best Practices is 90s garage rock on speed, and will keep you whistling for hours.

Providence Geeks' Geek Dinner: Rhode Island's digital innovators connect, collaborate and make the City-State
Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about AJAX, Mash-ups, Start-ups, and Web Services. It's totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whoever, arrive and vamoose whenever. And don't worry about eating or not. Come famished or full, eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities.

Can't Stand the Northeast Presents: The Third Death, Pahaa Verta, Ydinperhe, and White Load
The Third Death: loud fast and thrashing. Pahaa Verta is a hardcore band from Kouvola Finland. They recently finished an eastern European tour with Abnormi. They have released three 7" records and one LP. The LP was a favorite at MRR (Maximum Rock n Roll Magazine) and a top pick at Equalizing Distort radio in Toronto. This is their first US tour.
Ydinperhe is a hardcore punk band from Helsinki, Finland. They just completed a Finnish tour with Lapinpolthajat and a short tour of the Czech Republic and Austia with the Carnival. They have released two 7" records and one LP. Their first self titled 7" was a top ten pick at Equalizing Distort radio. This is their first tour of the US.

Andrew Suhre has a rock/country/blues/experimental sound.
Chrisy Gavin is a musician and artist. She has been in several bands including Slut Machine, Peter Rabbit, and Holly Electric Co. Her songs are full of heart and emotion. She's been described by Southern Yankee as "Roaches meet the Bangles."

Friday, June 17, 2011
9pm / $7
The Silks, Dastardly, and Vudu Sister
The Silks are a fresh folk blues project that consists of two guitars, bass and drums. They strive to keep their music traditional while keeping an infectious attitude.
Dastardly is a Chicago outfit (with members originally from RI) that plays Americana music with just the right ratio of sticky-sweet to fuckin' shit up. Every note is deliberate and controlled, but just barely masks an urgent and immediate sense of existential frantic terror that must be slowly driving them mad.
Vudu Sister is an offshoot of radio serials, vaudeville and evangelical preaching. They capture the thunderous, booming sound of the Voice from above as he channels the great Day of Wrath through a silver-tone box and a pleasant golden timbre.
