AS220 Print Shop
The Printshop is Hiring!

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

We are starting the search for the next AS220 Printshop Manager. Morgan Calderini has been serving as the Manager since September 2007, just shy of four years. She is excited to shift roles and become a member of the Printshop and a continued supported. In late 2010, the Printshop moved from its 500 square foot incubator space in the Dreyfus to a spot six times that size in the adjacent Mercantile Block Building on Martha Street. This relocation permitted the Printshop to provide a stage for several long-stored and storied presses, including the RISD-donated Takach Etching press with a bed measuring a whopping 4.5 x 10.5 feet. The shop available for print-makers from all over the country.

Interested in trying to walk a mile in Morgan's shoes - i.e. run AS220's Community Printshop? We are taking applications from now until July 15th.

Click Read More for details on whats entailed and what we are looking for in our future Shop Manager and if you think you've got what it takes, apply!

If you still have questions about this position or the hiring process after you "Read More," please direct them to: jobs@as220.org

Announcing: PHOTO LOTTERY 2011!!!

The Photo Frenzy Returns! Prepare yourself for a display of photo madness the likes of which have never been seen! This September marks the triumphant return of the Photo Lottery, AS220PHOTO's biennial celebration of the art and practice of photography.

photolottosmalllogo copy copy.jpg
Every two years, we ask photographers to donate one (or more) photo-based pieces to the Photo Lottery, and every two years those donated works are won, at random, by the people who buy a ticket to the main lottery event. This is an incredibly exciting event and is AS220PHOTO's major source of funding for the next two years. Every donation and every ticket sold helps us cover our operating costs, purchase supplies to keep classes affordable, offer teaching opportunities to local artists and support our staffing costs as we strive to build a full service, publicly accessible photo program right here in Providence.

The Photo Lottery is an epic event in the history of photography at AS220, and we hope you join us in a celebration of all things photographic this September. Visit the brand spankin' new Photo Lottery website to learn more about AS220PHOTO, the artists who have already contributed to the show, how you can donate work, buy tickets and be a part of the biggest photo party this town has ever seen!!

Look out for more Photo Lottery info coming soon, and make sure you find us at FOO FEST for a sneak peek at the photos you could win on Sept.24!

AS220 YOUTH ALUMNI: KIA DAVIS

Screen shot 2011-06-28 at 11.05.19 AM.png

AS220 Youth alumni, Kia Davis, first dug her claws into the studios back in 2006, when she was looking for a rigorous art program to build her college portfolio. Her desire to make sense of her changing world and her ever changing set of interests took root in the Paul Krot Darkroom where she made full use of the alchemy provided and created some amazing black and white images. Her work paid off, and she is now entering her third year as photography student at Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, New York.

Kia has also been working on writing, acting, and photographing for an independent film company based in NYC and Providence. Currently, she is working on a production of Soft in the Head, a screenplay that is somewhere between a film adaptation of Dostoevsky's "The Idiot" and a documentary about the film's creation. Kia says that it blurs the lines between what is made-up and what is not and that it is "must-see craziness".

Check out Kia's studio portfolio and read more about (and maybe even think about supporting) her latest project.

APOCA-LITE - Simple Circuit Animation

APOCA-LITE is the result of a collaboration between Visuals and Fabratory that took place in the Spring of 2011. We teamed up to teach a workshop at the Rhode Island Training school over the span of one week. Each morning a different set of students joined us to learn how to build a circuit using wire, conductive dough, LEDs and coin batteries. After learning how circuits work, students built a world with laser-cut drawings of city life, collaged medieval monsters, conductive dough and LEDs. They then animated their worlds, which were strung together to create this animated short.

Enter The Zu

princess.jpg

Violence breeds violence. In a society with a history as violent and intentionally disproportioned as ours, its no surprise that our community faces the challenges that it does. Robberies, weapons, drugs, unequal opportunity, an over representation of minority men in prison and an under representation of minority men enrolled in college are just a few to mention. Though movies, music, art and literature act only as a reflection of the current state of our society, they sometimes help add fuel and glorification to the already searing flames of our fire.

"Enter The Zu" comes to you from young people whose lives have been partly determined by the consequences of Americas wrong doings, the medias fixation on money sex and drugs, their families struggle to reach the American dream and the extreme lack of resources in this so called land of opportunity.

The name "Enter The Zu" was created as an ode to the our fore fathers, debut 1993 album "Enter The Wu-Tang". Wu-Tang Clan has influenced and paved the way for today's Hip Hop game, our selves included. The name also warns the listener that once inside the mind of the Zu, there's no going back.

Though every song on the album has potent concepts, the feel and sound is something that people can still rock out to. For example "Rain Dance" is song asking the Lord, Allah, The Supreme one or whatever greater force you believe in, to make it rain and wash away our sins. The beat however, sounds like a mixture of Swiss Beatz and Bollywood music. We wanted to make music that is true to us and conceptual but at the same time create something that will appeal to people everywhere. Nobody wants to be preached to, but they love to be sung to. J

"Enter The Zu" is set to drop the first week of July. ZUKREWE!!

Here is a sneak peak of the album cover in process!

BLIND CONTOUR AT THE RITS

DSC_0001-1.jpg

This session at the Training School, The Fabratory has been working on creating a panel mural meant to hang in the school cafeteria during graduation. For the last six weeks, we have been taking blind contour drawings of peoples faces and making them into digital prints. These self portraits are scanned into the and computer manipulated with Photoshop. We focused on building a composition through layering images and making dynamic color adjustments. The prints are mounted on a background that were vinyl cut in AS220 Labs. Check out some of our work in progress!
