June 7th at 7pm, AS220 photo will host a free, public artist talk by the President of the American Society of Media Photographers' New England Chapter, photographer Scott Indermaur. Scott will speak about the importance of maintaining personal artistic practice as a working professional. Many of us struggle to balance our personal creative practice with earning income through artistic pursuits; a challenge familiar to our guest. Professional assignments have taken Indermaur to small rural communities and sprawling urban landscapes, all the while, he has built compelling body of personal work. His passion for storytelling and undeniable market saavy are apparent in his photographs whether they are art for arts sake or work born from editorial and corporate assignments. If you are not familiar with Scott's work, we encourage you to explore his narrative photography and multimedia work as well as his portrait project, "Revealed", a stunning, stylized series of photographs depicting individuals with items they feel represent their spiritual experience online.
Join AS220 Photo and Scott Indermaur Tuesday, June 7th following AS220's monthly Cottage Industries Open House at 6pm. As a local leader in the ASMP, Indermaur has been a strong advocate for outreach and building community among photographers. He is looking forward to speaking at AS220 and connecting with Providence's photo community.
For anyone interested in AS220's print shop, photo programs or fabrication facilities at the Mercantile Block, all three will be open to drop-in on from 6pm on. For those interested in a broad overview, a tour of AS220 with Founder/Artistic Director Bert Crenca, lasting approximately one hour, will begin in the AS220 Photo's Mercantile Space at 6pm.

The AS220 Project Space/ Reading Room is psyched to have Tom Bubul's OSPREYS #16 Obscure Finale. This fantastic, dense, rich zine is filled with hidden treasures that demands multiple readings.
OSPREYS #16 consists of sixteen unbound single-sided two-color 11"x17" offset litho prints on 28lb blue paper, packaged in folded white butcher paper envelopes, individually titled in pink paint pen. It's big, and there's a lot in there.
This issue was designed to allow for a different experience from the wall and from reading distance; hang it up or read it in bed, either or. At medium distance, each of the package's sixteen pages is dominated by a large numeral and a sigil drawn on a diminishing grid that corresponds to that numeral's value; close up, eleven of the package's sheets are jammed with collages made from hundreds of drawings spanning late April and early December 2010. Two short stories written from October 2010 through February 2011 fill the other four.
This edition of the zine was produced by RK PROJECTS in an edition of 300 in conjunction with the solo drawing and painting exhibition OSPREYS, which was open May 2011 at an RK PROJECTS pop-up space in Providence. Printed at AS220 Community Printshop.

Join AS220 Resident Artist Leigh Waldron-Taylor this Friday night for a demonstration on preparing paper board for drypoint and printing from the board.
The process can be reviewed in advance here. We will build up background colors and experiment with printing the drypoint.
We will be drawing on the prepared board with a stylus, a sharp tool. Come thinking of the lines and textures of drypoint resting upon a color field as you explore ideas. Simple works best and is often most powerful.
All you need to bring is printing paper! To sign up visit the AS220 Online Shop!

Local Mixed Tape is working with the AS220 Youth Studio Digital Photography Department to promote the New England music scene, and capture artists featured on their website, which provides an online data base for artists and venues to connect and co-promote. The Local Mixed Tape project aims to connect the RI community with local musicians through performance showcases where artists can perform new pieces, play together, and make connections; while introducing their music to new demographics through presenting at new venues.
Recently the students of Photographic Memory's digital photography class were asked to shoot musician and year-round Artist-in-Residence at AS220, Daniel Chase, for the site. First, Julia, Sharon, James, Sabina and Ramone met Daniel and discussed what kind of portrait he wanted. Students were challenged by how to create a dynamic portrait with balanced lighting and composition in a relatively short period of time. After critiquing around a hundred photos, the images were narrowed down and the group chose an image of Daniel performing. Photo Mem students are looking forward to photographing more of the artists featured on Local Mixed Tape and are always on the lookout for "on-the-job" experiences to build their skills and portfolios.
You can visit the website to see more photos by students of AS220 Youth's Photo Mem.
Jordan Carter, a 21 year old writer and photographer is celebrating five years of involvement at the AS220 Youth Studio with a gallery show on Empire Street's second floor Youth Gallery this June. This is the first time Jordan will publicly exhibit some this body of creative work. He calls it "The Flaming City"; the show will feature photographs and booklets depicting a city in flames. Jordan uses B&W photo chemicals to create flamed effects in the darkroom, recreating visions seen in his dreams
Come show your support at the opening reception June 5th, 4-7pm.
