HOT Foil Stamping $25.00
Saturday, April 30th, 2-6pm
Instructor: Kat Cummings
Hot stamping is a straight forward process; 1) A die is mounted and heated, 2) Foil is positioned above the material to be imprinted, 3) A combination of heat, dwell time, pressure and stripping time control the quality of the stamp. Foil stamping is environmentally friendly due to it being a dry process. It does not use solvents or inks and does not create any harmful vapors. This course provides a four hour introduction to using the newest tool at the AS220 Printshop. Participants must attend this workshop in order to be certified to use this equipment. No materials needed for the first class. This is a demonstration based class. If you have a project, feel free to bring it we may use it during the demos.
Advanced Intaglio: Aquatint $120.00
Thursdays, April 14th, 21st, and 28th, 6pm-10pm
Instructor: Agata Michalowska
Previous basic knowledge of Intaglio required. Students will be introduced to aquatint which is the most common method of creating tones in etching, from a very subtle and faint tone to deep darks. An aquatint can be etched into the entire plate (creating various tones or a single one) or to a chosen area. The technique of spit bite aquatint allows a soft, painterly mark. A fine layer of rosin (ground up sap from pine trees) will be applied to a copper plate using a rosin box. The plate is then heated and the grains of rosin adhere to the copper creating a network of dots that act as a resist to the etchant (a ferric chloride bath). The plate is etched around each dot (each grain of rosin) resulting in a rough surface (a tooth) that will hold the ink and print as tone. The longer the plate is exposed to the etchant, the deeper the grooves- and the darker the tone.
Experiments in Monoprint/type $20.00
Last Friday of each Month, April 29th, 6pm-10pm
Instructor: Leigh Waldron Taylor
Join us for some Friday night experiments in the Printshop. Leigh will guide you through a new technique applicable to Monoprints or types. The ink and materials are up to us, you provide the paper and experimental spirit. There will be a demonstration each month followed by time for you to print. We may take a break over at the AS220 Foo(d) for dinner and drinks. Come with an open mind and willingness to explore.

Happy Spring campers! Now get out there and learn new things, make more art and make us proud!
Lauren Denitzio will be releasing issue #2 of her art zine "Get It Together" and selling some of her prints to pay for her travel back to NYC! The zine is based on interviews with artists and self-employed friends in Providence and what keeps them motivated - the zine aspires to inspire them to stay independent and keep pursuing their projects. You can see more of Lauren's work at her website blackandredeye.com.
"In late 2009 I put out a zine called "Get it Together". My idea was to illustrate mantras and motivational phrases contributed by my friends. Last summer I underwent open heart surgery and though I'm now doing fine, the ordeal only magnified the influence of productivity and mantras in my work, motivating me to create the zine.
I've continued this project at AS220 and have used my connections in town to create a Providence specific issue. While previously living here, my friends had always struck me as such motivated, productive people that had a big influence on my path as an artist and becoming self-employed as an illustrator. I've involved them in terms of contributing small explanations of what makes them so driven in their chosen careers, and other ventures whether it's being artists, musicians, small business owners, the management at BSR, etc. Though the artwork is reproduced in black and white, I treat the originals as their own separate drawing series, which I also present on their own. I've used AS220's facilities to incorporate screen printing into my work more as well."
----Lauren DenitzioIn Eamon's creative writing class we are inspired by reading several different authors and their work. We focus on literature and/or poetry and talk about what we liked about it. One author that I am inspired by is Willie Perdomo. He talks about his experiences growing up in the hood, from the good to the bad. I like his style of writing and the way he says what is on his mind.
In the poem below he talks about pain and how he deals with it. As if he is writing off his troubles, in hopes that his prayers will not let him down. I feel not only me, but anybody could relate to this piece.
-Rachel Scowcroft
I sang all night
And cried all day
Been waiting' for a
Storm to come my way
Drown the tears
Make soft the pain
I hope my prayers
Are not in vain
-Willie Perdomo

Life as it Should Be: Images from Bakersfield
By Kelly Phillips
Over the last three years, I have spent a significant amount of time away from my hometown of Bakersfield, California. It is a suburban city, population 400,000, with no downtown high rises. With three major oil refineries, Bakersfield has a unique desert/industrial feel which conflicts with expansive suburban track home developments.
I began photographing my hometown in order to preserve it in my memory; quite simply, this project was born out of homesickness. I wanted my wall to be overwhelmed with Bakersfield. My nostalgia for this undesirable place comes through in the photographs, as does my critical eye on Bakersfield city planning. In one image, the viewer sees my reflection in my bedroom window, while another has the oil fields of Chevron in the distance. The juxtaposition of nostalgia and criticism overlaps with a 'yes, people actually do live here' feel.
These photos are meant to document the extreme suburban growth, visible every time I return home, that creates an uncanny mix of industrial and residential zones. Developments are started, then never finished , leaving bakersfield with whole streets of ghost homes. Fields were plowed, roads were paved, light posts were installed, but sometimes the homes were never built. Houses and shopping centers alike display an eerie monotony of tan stucco. Even churches are not more than corrugated steel boxes with the same tan stucco. It was not until I left Bakersfield, who's motto is "Life As It Should Be," that I realized just how bizarre it actually is.
For this project I have printed 1000 postcards, overwhelming the gallery and the viewer with Bakersfield as I see it - monochromatic, industrial, suburban, vacant. The prints are imperfect, mimicking the dirty landscape of Bakersfield. Black and white enhances the grittiness, and the monochrome, cookie cutter feel of the city. Postcards are nostalgic mementos a tourist sends to loved ones, often displaying images of city pride. My postcards show dirty areas of conflict; Postcards you would never want to receive.
We are incredibly proud of Kelly for the effort she has put into this project and to her work at AS220. See more of Kelly's awesome photography here, and don't miss your chance to see this fantastic exhibition from one of AS220 Photo's own!
