Last weekend we had the honor of spending some time with Nova, Adam and Tabitha three stars from the film "Louder than a Bomb". A documentary about growing up, finding your voice, teamwork, trust and passion...oh yeah and slam poetry.
Every single year over 600 teens from more than 60 Chicago high schools get together for the world's biggest poetry slam, Louder than a Bomb. This competition is unlike any other youth poetry slam in the way that rather than competing as an individual, teens compete in teams. They work together to write, present and critique their poems and their peers. For some of these kids the competition and the friends they make along the way can be life changing.
AS220 Youth was lucky enough to spend both Friday and Saturday with the three poets, during that time they facilitated poetry workshops which were awesome and helped out our poets and mc writers alike. Our youth learned important things like metaphor, alliteration, and bravery. Getting up in front of people and spilling your heart out aint easy guys. We also got to watch the film as a part of the Providence Childrens Film Fest at the RISD auditorium! For free! Thanks for hooking us up! The movie as amazing, powerful and all the positive words I can come up with. Some of us even cried. Sniff Sniff. Not Me! Kidding. Me.

Have questions, want to see the shop, meet the folks who use it, just want to spend some time with other printmakers? Our open houses happen the first Tuesday of every month. They are FREE! No money involved, we've posted it on the shop you can sign up in advance if you like or just show up. Each month two of our keymembers and the shop manager are present to run the show.
If you would like to become a member of the shop, this is the time to bring some of your work by. The keymembers will chat with you about your prior printmaking experience and hopes and dreams for future printing. Then we sign you off to start printing or suggest that a class might be helpful if our practices dramatically differ from your previous shop experiences.
During this time we also offer orientations to the shop. We will cover basics of the AS220 shop, for example, our lighting and exposure system, rag and clean up procedures, sign up for shop time, ect. This is not an introduction to technique class, the purpose to run you through how the shop functions so that you may come and print.
You cannot use the shop until you have attended the an open house or a class.
Location and Parking The AS220 Community Printshop is located at the Mercantile at 131 Washington Street PROVIDENCE RI, 1st floor. The shop's entrance is located at the back of the building on Martha Street; the shop's double doors are at the Northwest corner of the building. There is 2 hour metered on street parking available, bring your quarters. We are also located near a parking garage with entry on Washington Street, look for the big blue parking sign.
AS220 YOUTH is proud to present all of the hard work that has been happening all over the studio this winter! Performances, plays, artwork, photography and crazy chemistry hosts!
Come down to the performance space from 4-6 for our showcase and stick around for ZUOLOUGY ( Our open mic) from 6-9! Tons of great performances are scheduled and it should be a ton of fun! If you were there last time we had a crazy good time. Peanut butter faces and chicken wing love!

Miguel Rosario, in front of his work at the RITS 2011
Miguel Rosario, in his Photo class at the RITS 2007
In 2009 Miguel Rosario traveled to his hometown of Moncion to photograph a way of life he remembered as a child. His goal is to capture photographic images of the people and places before they change with increasing development. Nine photos from this continuing body of work are now up at the RITS . IF you don't know, the AS220 Youth Program holds a host of art classes including photography for the students in the Training School. This is Miguel's second solo show, his first was at the AS220 Youth Gallery in 2009. Big Ups to Miguel for creating such strong artwork and inspiring students in the Rhode Island Training School.
