Author Talk with Tricia Shapiro
Tricia Shapiro is going to be traveling through the NorthEast in mid-November promoting her new book, "Mountain Justice: Homegrown Resistance to Mountaintop Removal, for the Future of Us All." "Mountain Justice" is an embedded reporter's account of years spent within the ranks of organizers and coalfield residents fighting Mountaintop Removal (MTR) in Appalachia, which is widely considered to be the most destructive mining practice on earth, and has been moving to the forefront of environmental issues lately, as indicated by recent articles in both the New York Times and the LA Times.

Special Event: Deer Tick Weekend! Tonight: Deer Tick, CP & The Burritos, and Amil Byleckie Band
*No volunteer passes or free admission tickets will be accepted for this show.
This show will sell out, so arrive early to get a place in line. Line will form outside and ticket sales will open around 8pm, ticket sales limited to one per present person.
You all know Deer Tick! Here's info from their myspace: "Basically we play all sorts of music and are heavily influenced by legend status songwriters and performers, like Tom Petty and Sammy Davis, Jr. We consider ourselves a rock n roll band. Our live shows sometimes tend to go a bit haywire. We like to put on memorable shows, the kind of shows that you don't see very often. If you don't want to get covered in beer or confetti at one of our shows, I'd suggest not standing up in the front. We also like doing cover songs. Some songs, like "These Old Shoes", are written by friends of ours (Chris Paddock); whereas other songs, like "La Bamba", are traditional Mexican folk songs. We've covered a good number of songs from artists such as Hank Williams, John Prine, Nirvana, The Beatles, Michael Hurley, The Sex Pistols, The Replacements, Sean Kingston, The Shivers, Warren Zevon... I could go on for awhile, but I'd like to let you know that we're working on a few new surprise covers that we'll be pulling out this year. I named the band Deer Tick after taking a hike in Indiana with my good friend Brendon Massei, who you may know as Viking Moses. I discovered a deer tick on my scalp later that evening. Surprisingly, growing up in Rhode Island and frequently going on camping and fishing trips as a youngster, I had managed to go 19 years of my life without ever getting a tick. Some folks have taken offense to the name, but its not like we're advocates or parasitic arachnids, I just thought it sounded cool. I'd also like to note that I had never heard of Deerhoof or Deer Hunter until it was too late. Sorry guys. We've played our asses off since the beginning and do not foresee slowing down anytime soon. Here's a few folks we've had the privilege of sharing the stage with: Neko Case, The Felice Brothers, Nas, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Jenny Lewis, J.D. Souther, Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, Dead Confederate, A.A. Bondy, you get the picture. And this year we'll be touring with such outstanding artists as Dr. Dog, Those Darlins, and Holy Sons. I'm sure there's much more awesome stuff ahead this year than the four of us could imagine, and we'd like to thank our fans for their continued support. See you out on the road, Tickheads!"
Amil Byleckie Band: Byleckie has been resisting his inevitable fate to be a heartthrob pop-star for over a decade. Strategies utilized to thwart this destiny include: bad haircuts, elaborate pop operas about pirate- snakes, devotion to producing a you-tube sitcom about economics, a stint singing only lyrics lifted from adult personals, etc. Destiny has its own designs though. Through all the side roads taken he has never forsaken his pop roots and has coalesced finally into a force of unstoppable catchiness with his new band consisting of JD "Fingers" Fontanella, Lyndon "Licks" Lopez, and Diego "Skins" Perez.
CP & The Burritos... comin at you like refried beans in a tortilla! http://www.myspace.com/deertick http://www.iamamil.com http://www.myspace.com/chrispaddock

Special Event*: UT, Neptune, and Whore Paint
This is a special event. Tickets will be sold at the door. No advance tickets will be sold- this is first come, first serve. No volunteer passes or free admission tickets will be accepted for this show.
Ut (Nina Canal, Jacqui Ham and Sally Young) originated from New York City's downtown No Wave scene in December 1978. The inheritors of the fertile collision between rock, free jazz and the avant garde that first manifested itself in the Velvet Underground, Ut soon became a serious force within the New York music scene. The band were joined briefly by filmmaker Karen Achenbach in 1979 before resuming as a three piece and migrating to London in 1981. Ut toured the UK with bands such as The Fall and The Birthday Party. Originally releasing albums on their own label Out Records, the band became a favourite of John Peel's (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/artists/u/ut) and recorded several sessions for his show before joining forces with Blast First in 1987. In Gut's House was originally released in 1988 and made NME's Top 50 that year. As The Washington Post exclaimed "With In Gut's House, Ut has scraped and droned one of the finest underground rock albums of the year....The tightly woven, firmly focused sound...is rich, spooky, urgent and quite unexpectedly beautiful." In 1989 the band recorded and released the album Griller, engineered by label-mate Steve Albini, who shared Ut's raw aesthetic. In March 1990, Ut played their last concert in Paris. They are reuniting to play a VERY limited tour of the Northeast United States.
Neptune is a noise music band from Boston that built all their custom made guitars and basses out of heaps of scrap metal. They also play on custom made percussion instruments and electric lamellophones. Neptune began in 1994 as a student art project by sculptor/musician Jason Sanford, who forged guitars and drums out of circular saw blades, gas tanks, oil drums, bike parts, VCR casings and miscellaneous scrap metal found in the trash. The early guitars were untunable, resulting in the atonal sound of the early recordings. With several different members and collaborators over the years, the music has evolved with the instruments, blending the traditional sounds of rock & roll with industrial soundscapes. The current three-piece lineup relies as heavily on home-made electronics as it does its signature scrap metal instruments. Improvisation and performance art play key roles in their live shows. In summer of 2006 Neptune signed with Table of the Elements, an experimental record label that is home to acts such as Rhys Chatham, John Cale, Captain Beefheart.
Whore Paint: Risen from the ashes of a pre-post-feminist rage-fueled dystopia, Whore Paint claims a Riff Rock/No Wave/Crooner Shred hybrid as the only suitable expression of political discontent, borderline social anxiety, occasional violent outbursts, sexual discernment, periodic bouts of euphoria, and whatever that feeling is you get after a good high five. Members of Arcing/Teenage Waistband/Made In Mexico.

We are Roz Raskin and the Rice Cakes. We are comprised of Casey, Roz, and Justin. Along with eating rice cakes, we enjoy running through fields of flowers and praying to our lord Satan. Each of us comes from a very different musical background yet we come together with the goal of making interesting, new, experimental and fun songs. We are a 3 kids residing in Providence, RI who love to play music. Here's some fun stuff we've done: The Rice Cakes began in 2006 when 17-year-old Roz released her solo album The Ecotones. Recorded by friends in kitchens, closets, and living rooms, the album was pressed and released by Roz out of her bedroom. The album sold over 500 copies throughout Providence without any professional distribution. Roz began playing throughout the North East with good friend and bassist John Cairo. The pair developed a staunch local following with the help of their sweet melodies and charismatic stage show. It wasn't long before they met Casey Belisle, a friendly and talented drummer playing in a progressive noise band. The Rice Cakes were born.
Bo-Peep: from JAPAN: "More vicious rifts than a pack of starving polecats.Their Ramones back to back style delivery is giving us speedy three minute slices of rock gold.BO-PEEP won over the audience easily,...they were the stars of the evening." -David Harrison, Music Towers, U.K. "BO-PEEP,won a flock of new fans with their brutal live show and grunges-up guitar workouts, and even found acclaim in The Guardian and The Sun, despite previously having no profile whatsoever. Lawks." -www.PlayLouder.com *BO-PEEP's fourth album "SICK ORANGE TELEVISION" is out now! If you are in Japan, you can buy our CD at Tower Records or HMV in some cities. Or, you can buy it from the 3rd Stone Store. If you are outside Japan, check your iTunes Music Store. BO-PEEP's music is available at the iTunes Music Store in many countries around the world. If it's not available in your country, please let us know. Thanks! PROFILE: The origins of BO-PEEP go back to school days in Fukuoka, Japan where Mika Yoshimura (guitar, vocals) and Ryoko Nakano (drums, chorus) met and decided to form a band. By Junior College days, the band was reformed, and with Junko Himei (bass, chorus) all the elements were in place. After playing out extensively in Fukuoka, and recording independently, BO-PEEP moved it's base to Tokyo, capital of Japan, where they joined Mother Records and continued to tour not only Tokyo, but other parts of the country as well. BO-PEEP achieves the utmost simple chaos from their instruments, solid brittle lyrics and cage-rattling vocals. At the core of that chaos is pure harmony surrounding solid, catchy melodies and in that blend comes their originality. With MO'SOME TONEBENDER's Isamu Fujita as engineer on their latest album, BO-PEEP's studio recordings have the aura and power of live performances. Tower Record's BOUNCE magazine in Japan says: "It's hard to imagine the extent of this 3-piece girl band's dense, intense sound piercing the world as it does". The first album, "0X3? was recorded in 2003, and the second, "Time of Rock" was recorded in 2005.
Lolita Black: From Providence, Rhode Island. Project started in 2005, with original member of Dropdead, Bob on guitar. Backed by Kaleigh on drums. Jake then joined playing bass in the late winter and, Jessika on vocals in the spring of 2006. Jessika then left in the fall in 2009 and Scarlett joined in spring 2010 as the new lead singer/songwriter. We practice in Olneyville, RI and play original, intense and heavy music.
