Supply & Demand Presents: Dark Dark Dark, Brown Bird, Spirits of the Red City, and Liz Isenberg
Dark Dark Dark performs haunting songs. Themes include love and heartbreak, death and loneliness, and the persistent sense of hope that keeps you living and moving. These themes tangle with tales of ghosts, fermenting bodies, and magical dreams.
Brown Bird is a five piece orchestra of voices and instruments. Haunting lyrics surge on waves of appalachian, gypsy, and shanty music. Pulling from the backgrounds of each musician to create a quiet, dark, folk music that often swells into high spirited foot stomping madness.
Liz Isenberg writes songs on the guitar string/bass/loop pedal/ and banjo.
Spirits of the Red City is a Minneapolis-based, eight-member ensemble who call home places as scattered as Alaska, Chicago and New York City. Call the music time-weathered folk or strewn remnants of Americana or something else entirely. What you will hear: Opaque lyrics, at once lonely and longing and hopeful and weary and love-strewn, given breath with explorative structure and melody from cello, violas, mandolin, trumpet, drums, banjo, accordion, layered vocal harmonies and more. Following a pair of celebrated, sold-out release shows in Minneapolis, the ensemble spent much of 2009 touring across the country, playing everywhere from well-recognized venues including Skull Alley (Louisville, KY), Bob's World Famous Java Jive (Tacoma, WA), Hotel Utah (San Francisco, CA), Vaudeville Mews (Des Moines, IA), The Middle East (Cambridge, MA), and 7th St. Entry (Minneapolis, MN) to speakeasies, basements, ocean piers, and other nontraditional venues. In 2010, the ensemble plans to perform over a hundred dates across the country, release a 7" featuring three new songs, and continue work on a follow-up to its acclaimed debut recording. "... Plays with the airy intimacy and elegance of a minimalist duo, with wistful themes and relatively spare orchestrations: a simple cello line, a gently strummed guitar or a lonely fiddle. Spirits of the Red City singer Will Garrison has a whiskey-soaked voice that's a little weary but full of honesty and passion." -National Public Radio

Action Speaks: What's Eating Us? : 1987 The Roaming Mobro Garbage Barge; Garbage, Garbage Everywhere and no direction home!
With Special Guests Juliet Schor & Robin Nagle
In 1987, a Barge filled with garbage was dragged up and down the East Coast of the United Sates and down into Caribbean and Mexican waters. Starting as an attempt to produce methane, the barge became synonymous with our society's problems with consumption and disposal. In our discussion of this classically underappreciated moment, famed Boston University Professor, Juliet Schor will join with the only "Archeologist in Resident" ever hired by the NYC Department of Sanitation, Professor Robin Nagle to discuss the issue of what to do with the waste products from a material rich society.

Future Islands, Amil Byleckie Band, and Young Male Amil "The Band" Byleckie has been resisting his inevitable fate to be a heartthrob pop-star for over a decade. Strategies utilized to thwart this destiny include: bad haircuts, elaborate pop operas about pirate-snakes, devotion to producing a you-tube sitcom about economics, a stint singing only songs with lyrics lifted straight from adult personal ads, etc. Destiny has its own designs though. Through all the side roads taken he has never forsaken his pop roots and has coalesced finally into a force of unstoppable catchiness with his new band, consisting of JD "Fingers" Fontanella, Lyndon "Licks" Lopez, and Diego "Skins" Perez.
Future Islands: "Replacing the dance-pop movement with rich characterization and storytelling, they've found themselves at a pleasant distance from most formal genre comparisons. Their music is playful but steeped in subtle detail, with both emotional heft and a pungent sense of theatricality... Drawing from a few different traditions while making them their own, Future Islands prove here to be a well-versed group of wild, woolly storytellers."- Pitchfork (7.6)
Young Male is Quinn Taylor.
