Elation #1-3 collaged mixed media pieces by RI artist Christina Olszewski were hanging in the AS220 Window Gallery in the Bar/Taqueria space. They are no longer there & went missing at Foo Fest. If you have seen them or know of their whereabouts please call Neal at (401)490.6164 or e-mail at neal@as220.org. No questions asked, just please return them to AS220.
Thank You.
Come visit the Printshop over at Pawtucket Movie Madness we will be printing with our mini letterpress and have plenty of information about what we do to share with you! This event is part of the Pawtucket Arts Festival. On Saturday August 29th there will be artists and Hope Artiste Village tenants exhibiting from 4-8pm and at 8pm the movie Napoleon Dynamite begins. There will be special hands on exhibits by Keeseh Studio as well as AS220. We invite everyone to bring beach chairs and blankets and get comfortable in the courtyard as the movie is projected on the facade of the historic Hope Webbing building. Food vendors will be serving all day. The event is FREE and open to everyone! Should it rain, all events will be taking place indoors.

While from its inception AS220's mission has been to bring access and enjoyment of the arts to as many people as possible, we have, of late, concocted a method of topping our own best. Artists and patrons, rejoice! Unite! AS220 brings you our most efficacious and hassle-free means of exhibiting, viewing, and purchasing local art to date. Behold, the AS220 FlatFiles! Located in our Mathewson Street Project Space, the FlatFiles may be perused at any time during regular gallery hours and are filled with works on paper of varied mediums. All of these works are for sale on site, as well as through our website at AS220.org/shop. Just as with shows that hang on the walls, all works in the Files are completely unjuried and uncensored. (I'm talking to you, Rhode Island 2D artists!) Making your prints, paintings, photographs, or drawings available for show and sale has never been simpler. Provided your artistic stylings fall within the dimensions of our files, you may submit work to be included in this collection. Ahoy, artists! Contact our gallery director to get on board. Perusers, stop by the gallery, virtually or physically, to bask in the warm glow of talent and beauty that goes by only one name: local art.

In the back to school spirit? Looking for a fun place to learn some cool new skills and make some art? Well you're in luck because new classes have been scheduled in the Darkroom with a few of our classic courses ready to roll this fall. Check out intro and intermediate printing classes and learn your way around AS220's facilities with our helpful and knowledgeable staff, keymembers and instructors. For more information, contact krystal@as220.org
The Black and White Darkroom $100.00 (three student minimum) Intro to Photo Workshop Two Instructor-Gail Porter * Oct 21, 28 & Nov 4th from 7-10pm* Students will learn to develop their own film and to print their own photographs in AS220's state of the art, well ventilated darkrooms. Being able to control the contrast of a print and to apply the simple techniques of burning and dodging can make a big difference in ones ability to create a print that sparkles as opposed to one that just shines. The course is geared toward those who use 35mm, or medium format cameras, (including Holgas).
Intro to 35mm Camera: Everything You Wanted to Know $50.00 (two student minimum) Intro to Photo Workshop One Instructor-Gail Porter- * Oct 7th & 14th from 7-10pm* Take the mystery out of the terms and usages of aperture sizes, f-stop numbers, shutter speeds, ISO numbers, focal length, synchronization speeds and any other aspect of the 35mm camera that you have ever wondered about We will take the camera off the automatic mode, and learn about the creative possibilities that exist once exposure is fully understood. This is a non-darkroom class and is therefore open to anyone shooting black and white or color film. A 35mm camera with automatic override, and one roll of film and its processing will be required.
Intermediate Printing Class $200 (three student minimum) Instructor: Stewart Martin Oct 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, Nov 3rd, 10th from 7-10pm. This course is designed for those with some experience printing black & white looking to further hone their skills. Classes covered setting up a darkroom, mixing and tweaking chemistry, contrast control, dodging, burning, flashing, washing, toning, spotting, print finishing, breaking down a darkroom and exhibiting your work. The objective: to master the scientific in order to explore the creative. Class instructor Stewart Martin is a professional printer and photographer working in the field of traditional photography for over twenty-five years. His early printing experience included edition printing for Larry Clark, Bruce Davidson and Larry Fink. Although events and portraits are the bulk of his commercial work, he also does a specialized type of photography of the eye for ophthalmologists. He lives and works in Providence with his wife and daughter
As the BSS Beat team continues to build our library through the summer, each week our producers highlight the beat of the week. This week it's R.I.P.'s newest work, Club Hit. When asked how he came up with the beat he said, "I want people to move when they hear this". Take a listen.bssbeatlibrary+clubbanga.mp3

The moment we've all been waiting for has arived, art lovers! Foo Fest has landed in downtown Providence, and by one o'clock this afternoon Empire Street will be transformed into the most densely packed amalgam of rock n roll, art stars, hilarity, good times, and self-expression the world has ever known! How did we manage to combine so many of your favorite things into one gargantuan event? We don't remember. We're too busy enjoying the fun!

For RISD alumn Will Reeves, art appreciation is like a petting zoo. Why watch it on TV when you can kick up some dust and feed it from your hand? This Saturday at Foo Fest, Reeves will put this philosophy to work in the form of a elephantine medicine ball: think Jupiter Jump meets large-scale art installation. Read on for his thoughts on experiencing life and humanity through art-making and collaboration.

The cat is clawing its way, kicking and screaming, out of the bag! Deer Tick, the indie super-group most recently reminding us how glad we are to live in Providence, will grace the Foo Fest stage this Saturday as our heretofore top-secret very special guests! Careful, though; these down-home heroes come with a caveat: watching Deer Tick may inhibit your ability to ever again utter the phrase, "I like everything but country." Don't miss these ultra-modern good ole boys telling it like it is, the old fashioned way.
That's right, team. Lest you have trouble justifying the expenditure of $5 to experience a made from scratch video arcade, interactive art installations, all your favorite Providence vendors, and 22 of the most dazzling, endearing, terrifying, and booty-shaking bands Rhode Island has to offer, Perishable Theater has found a way to sweeten the deal. Admission to Foo Fest grants you free access to both 3:00 and 8:00 performances of "Poste Restante: The Post Office Never Looked So Sexy." Step off of the midway and into Perishable's air-conditioned haven for a multi-media menagerie that begs the following:
"What will The Secret Agents do with an anonymous package, cardboard box bikinis, a few handwritten letters, a bicycle with wings, and one mysterious vinyl record? Could it possibly involve inanimate object domination, acrobatic knots, full-throttle origami and a cocoa pop?"
Could it, indeed!?!?
"In this show, Tim and Bonnie will immerse you into simply constructed worlds that distort the grand themes of time, scale, and reality. Short segments of video, acrobatics, puppetry, and theatre flow into one another and spin together touching moments with humorous ones. Tim and Bonnie's movement has been called 'Breathtakingly simple.' There is something for everyone at a Secret Agents show."
And, how. Add this to the list in the letter you write to your future grandchildren about why August 15, 2009, was the greatest day of your life!
