The real fun in electronics is when you can use a circuit to make things go. Come learn some basics of electric motors, including DC motors, AC motors, servos, and steppers with Tom Sgouros (www.sgouros.com). Guest appearance by Judy the robot.
This session is free if you want to come and listen. You'll have to pay for materials if you want to complete the kit and take things home with you. Some sample motors will be available, which can also be purchased cheaply.

April is International Laser Month at AS220 Labs!
Announcing Laser cutter workshops: Learn how to use this tool to cut or etch wood, plastics, papers or textiles! Every Tuesday 5:30pm to 9pm, beginning April 7th.
Each workshop is limited to 5 people. Register now at the online shop.
Please note that an earlier version of this article (and...ahem...some of the posters) said every Thursday beginning April 7th. Well, April 7th (2009) is a Tuesday! So...the dates in the shop signup are correct; they're on Tuesdays! Sorry for the confusion; I'm an idiot.
Catch AS220's Arley-Rose Torsone tonight at 6pm at New Urban Arts. She wants to make the world a better place through graphic design. Although her pieces may not be Nobel Peace Prize Winners themselves, however, she believes that her graphics are small steps towards a greater good. With a firm belief that "A wise person makes more opportunities than they find," she is thoroughly invested in her work at AS220 as the in-house graphic designer and manager of the Design Providence Cottage Industry, where she also teaches design classes to the amazing young people of Broad Street Studio. Since her graduation from Parsons the New School for Design and moving to Providence in 2004, she has dedicated her professional career to designing for causes which have socially-responsible roots and sustainable practices. She believes that "good design is not just about profit or beauty, but creating social value" (Patrick Butler).
New Urban Arts Series: Conversations on Creative Practice is made possible through generous support of The Rhode Island Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. This event is organized by New Urban Arts Mentoring Fellows, Andrew Oesch and Peter Hocking.
The Patricia W. Edwards Memorial Art Fund was established 20 years ago to further the education of Rhode Island high school students studying painting and/or drawing. Awards will be given to students to take art lessons in two-dimensional art at Rhode Island nonprofit institutions (e.g., Rhode Island School of Design's Young Artist Program, AS220, etc.)
A simple two page application and 3-5 pieces of art work will get you in the running to take a workshop of your choice paid for by the scholarship from the Rhode Island Foundation.
You can use the scholarship here at AS220 in the Printshop, Labs, Darkroom or Design Providence. To see workshops we offer check out our online shop.
