Beginning Video: Guerrilla Tactics for Image Making @ AS220 Media Arts

This class will utilize professional and makeshift approaches to video production that will enable the student to make video works anywhere.

The aim of this class is to empower students to engage the moving image in innovative ways. Students will utilize a hands-on approach to video making while investigating historic and contemporary examples of video art works from the 1970’s to now. Students will employ in-class explorations to create video works that are personal, innovative and thoughtful. This class will utilize professional and makeshift approaches to video production that will enable the student to make video works anywhere.

Fabric Repeat Printing @ AS220 Printshop

This course will introduce the design and registration methods necessary for printing in repeat.  We’ll go over different types of repeats, creating a jog line, and options for designing by hand or on the computer.  Then we’ll get into the technical aspects of registering and printing a repeating pattern on our AS220-sized version of a typical textile printing table.  Each student will be able to design one one-color pattern and print 2 yards of fabric. This class is intended for students that have taken our Intro to Silkscreen class or that know that basics of the photo-emulsion silkscreen process.

Intro to Offset @ AS220 Printshop

Colorful ‘zines, single-page artists’ books, posters, and flyers can all be created in large quantities using the Printshop’s Offset Press. The first class will be spent in the Media Arts Lab using the Adobe Creative Suite to turn your ideas into formatted files ready for the press.

Five weeks will be spent on press with Jacque Bidon, where you will learn how to run the ABDick 9850 Offset Press – a commercial press capable of creating hundreds of prints in a matter of minutes. Finishing processes will be covered including folding using our pneumatic machine, using our saddle stitch stapler, and trimming on the guillotine.

Beginner Modern Dance @ 95 Empire Dance Studio

Beginner Modern Dance with  Stephanie Turner // Wednesdays @ 6:30-8pm // $13 per class; $60 for 6 classes 

Class begins with a warm-up that incorporates yoga and breathwork with gentle movements of the spine. A series of short phrases will then be explored, where students are encouraged to play and experiment with how his/her individual body prefers to move through the demonstrated movements. The phrases include elements like directional changes, movement through space, spirals, rotation, lines, momentum, energy and floorwork.  Each phrase that is developed will lead to a rich and colorful dance toward the end of class.  OpenModern5

Stephanie Turner is a choreographer, teacher and performer based in Providence, RI.  She earned a BFA in Dance Performance at Rhode Island College in 2010. Stephanie has performed for several independent choreographers including Olase Freeman, Katie McNamara, Melody Ruffin Ward and Betsy Miller. She is the co- founder of The Movement Exchange in Pawtucket, RI.  Stephanie has been teaching at AS220 since 2012 and has taught workshops at several universities and schools around New England.

Learn through a hand-on introduction to traditional black and white photo printing at the Paul Krot Darkroom. Students should bring two rolls of exposed film to class to develop. The cost of the workshop includes a material fee of $20 consisting of  film, five sheets of RC paper, and chemistry.

Intro to Origami @ AS220 Printshop

Origami, the art of paper folding, is beautiful and timeless, thanks to its simplicity. After all, there is only one way to fold a piece of paper. Yet within that single fold is a universe of possibilities. With every variation of a fold, a new shape emerges. In a common sheet of paper, there exists the notion of a flower, the thought of a fish, and the dream of a bird.

We will start with the basics of this art form and move onto more intermediate and advanced skills. You will learn how to fold practical things like boxes and containers to action figures (like a paper bird that flaps its wings when you pull the tail) and geometric shapes created by modular units and tessellations, (beautiful Escher-like repeated patterns). We will also discuss other applications of origami- as in art, card making, ornaments, mobiles, gift-wrapping, home décor, and installations.

This class offers an unconventional approach to printing on the letterpress. Using a collection of patterned wood blocks, wood and metal type, and low-relief collagraph plates, students will create spontaneous, layered prints.  Seasoned printers as well as beginners are encouraged to take this class.

Students will leave with a collection of unique artists’ books, and technical knowledge of the Vandercook Proofing Press.

While this is class offers a basic overview of the letterpress, we suggest that you take Introduction to Letterpress for a deeper and more complete understanding of letterpress printing, including polymer plate making and additional troubleshooting guidance.

This course provides a basic introduction to letterpress. Participants learn to ink the press, adjust pressure, adjust roller height, register and feed a sheet of paper, make an impression and then clean the press. Create and use polymer plates in combination with metal movable type to create your own vision in letterpressed embossment.

InC, a performance and interpretation of “In C” by Terry Riley

This year is the 50th anniversary of the landmark composition, “In C”, by Terry Riley. To celebrate this event, with Terry Riley’s blessing, I designed software, InC, that allows me to play this ensemble work as a solo artist on an iPad mini. The software was written by Matt Ingalls, a well regarded musican and computer programmer. This software will be free to download from the iTunes Music App Store.
 
 “In C” has a few rules. With one player as a pulse, an ensemble plays 53 repeated musical phrases in order. Players play through the 53 phrases until they tire, or agree to stop. That’s it for rules.
 
This software allows one to control all “players” in the ensemble as a set of volume sliders, like a mixer. Each slider controls an internal voice or a MIDI channel triggering a synthesizer, and control the tempo.
 
This work brings In C into the 21st century. The wide open nature of this software’s capabilities, turns Riley’s composition into a tool for improvisation. The notes don’t change, but how they are expressed and understood and experienced, does.
 
25 years ago a recording I did of “In C” was used at AS220 for a dance troupe. This concert on 26 July will be a triumphant return for me, and a highlight of an important cultural moment in music. This is not to be missed.

Henry Warwick is an artist, composer, writer, and assistant professor in the RTA School of Media at Ryerson University in Toronto, and is a research fellow at the Infoscape Lab at Ryerson. He has a BFA in Visual Systems Studies from Rutgers University, an MFA from Goddard College in Interdisciplinary Art, and a PhD in Communications from the European Graduate School in Switzerland. Originally from Edison, New Jersey, he has lived in Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA. An active artist in a variety of media, his visual artwork is on display in a variety of locations in California and most of his music can be downloaded for free at his website, kether.com. Since 2007, he has lived in Toronto with his wife, Beth, and their daughter, Elizabeth, and their kitty cats.

“Listen to any track on this album. Have you ever heard someone
else who sings like Azure Carter? I sure haven’t. Have you heard
anyone who plays as a wide range of instruments, with such
gleeful abandon, as Alan Sondheim does? Me neither. Put them
together and this may be the most original and unique sound to
come along in years, even decades perhaps.

Carter’s lyrics are, I am told, related to and/or inspired by
Second Life, an online virtual world. That may have significance
for some, perhaps even great significance, but even a Luddite
such as myself can enjoy them and interpret them in the context
of meatbag life: longings for contact and connection,
deconstructions of our strategies for satisfying that longing,
self-analyses and reflection. Between the conundrums and quirks
of that search and the restless music underpinning them, this is
an album of unease, of a hypermodern sense of overwhelming
possibility, even though sometimes Carter’s cadences sound
eerily like Psalms or the Song of Solomon (you can hear this
right off the bat on “Among the Ferns”).

About that music. Alan Sondheim, an underground icon from the
’60s thanks to a 1967 debut album on Riverboat that made the
infamous Nurse With Wound list, followed up with two albums on
notorious outsider label ESP-Disk’, has made a 21st-century
comeback (in the interim, he established himself as an academic
pioneering cyberspace theory). His improvised music resists all
genre labels, though one can hear, in the sounds of the
instruments chosen if not always the non-traditional techniques
he uses to play them, so-called world music; on the tracks Ed
Schneider and Chris Diasparra play on, there are traces of jazz
in their contributions; and Sondheim’s early blues roots shine
through on “Credo.” It is music based on gesture and timbre
rather than harmony and/or melody, and rhythmically abjures
beats. “That ‘mama heartbeat,’ that ‘bom-bom-bom’ . it’s so
boring, it’s so banal,” Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart once
said. “I want things to change like the patterns and shadows
that fall from the sun.” Sondheim’s improvisations are like
that, except as though played by a metabolism operating at a
faster rate of speed, or filmed and fast-forwarded.” . Steve

Azure Carter is an artist, educator, and singer/songwriter. When
she isn’t collaborating on music, video, or performance with her
partner, Alan Sondheim, she is busy studying education theory or
working on an on-going performance/video piece, The Fairyland
Around Us, based on the writings of the early 20th century
naturalist, Opal Whitely. Before moving to Providence, Carter
lived in NYC and performed at numerous venues in the city and
elsewhere, including the 92nd Street Y, Dance New Amsterdam, The
Bowery Poetry Club, Eyebeam, Jack, and Highwire Gallery. In
2012, Fire Museum produced Cauldron, with Carter, Helena
Espvall, and Sondheim, an album of improvisations and song-
forms.

If you’ve always wanted to try ballet, this class is for you. In this fundamentals-based class, students develop basic ballet vocabulary, strength and coordination. Stephanie’s deep knowledge of her craft combines with a warm, good-humored manner to create a comfortable yet challenging learning environment. This is the perfect class for people who have little or no ballet experience.

Stephanie Albanese is a graduate of The School of American Ballet where she studied with teachers Alexandra Danilova, Helen Dudin, Suki Shorer and Stanley Williams. She danced in a repertory company created by former New York City Ballet member Wilhelmina Frankurt. Stephanie has also danced with choreographers Matthew Brokoff, Marcus Galante, Mary Miller and Felice Lesser and also worked in Cabaret, performing at The Lido in Paris and Jubliee in Las Vegas.
