Make and Break Wednesday: Postponed to November 5th @ AS220 Labs
Oct 1 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

UPDATE: Unfortunately we had some problems with the parts in the new version of this kit, so we have to potpone until November 5th. Sorry about that!

Register Here

Make and Break Wednesdays are after work electronics project workshops. We’ll show you how to solder if you never have before (or are rusty), or you might just want to come and build an interesting kit with friends. Each workshop features a different kit; sometimes more than one if we have kits left over from previous workshops.
Make and Break workshops take place in the AS220 Performance Space on Empire street. It’s right next to the bar and restaurant so you can eat and solder (we use lead free solder, by the way). All materials are provided and we usually have enough for 20 people. You can reserve a slot here or just show up but it is first-come-first served with prepaid folks getting preference. The workshop is before the LULZ comedy night, so there’s a hard stop around 8:00pm. Stragglers are welcome to set up in a corner of the bar however, and can return during Lab hours to finish up if needed.
The Fall projects are:

Is This Jazz? featuring Alon Nechushtan with Venture Bound Trio, and City of Four @ AS220
Oct 3 @ 8:30 pm – Oct 4 @ 1:00 am

On October 3rd  Is This Jazz? will be presenting another night of great jazz at AS220, featuring pianist Alon Nechushtan. Alon is an Israeli-born musician who has traveled the world bringing his unique musical heritage to grateful audiences everywhere. He has since relocated to New York City and is ready to make his Rhode Island debut with his Venture Bound Trio. As a group they have performed in such historic venues as Carnegie Hall, Jazz At Lincoln Center, and The Blue Note. Alon and his trio will be celebrating the release of their new album on the jazz label Enja, showcasing what DownBeat magazine calls “compelling chemistry in abundance and bold two-fist sense of architecture…making venture bound worth the most discerning listener.” Susan Frances of Jazz Times writes that Alon “keeps his notes on their toes as he creates tightly-rung arabesques and vivacious pirouettes with his keys…an instinct for organizing purely improvised energy that requires the audiences’ undivided attention.” Opening the night will be City of Four, a jazz ensemble based in Amherst, MA that recently released their self-titled debut album and has performed at Symphony Hall in Boston.

Finally, we have spent the last several months planning another event to take place this October to celebrate the spookiest holiday of them all. Local alto sax legend Greg Abate has been working with ITJ and AS220 to bring his Halloween themed album “Monsters In The Night” to life. On Friday October 24, Greg and the original band he recorded this album with will reunite for a one time special night at AS220’s Black Box Theatre (95 Empire Street, Providence, RI) to present selections from this fantastic work. The tunes represent themes composed by Greg to represent the various monsters and creepy imagery associated with Halloween, all presented by a powerhouse quintet featuring Abate, Paul Nagel, Artie Montanato, Bill Miele, and Vinny Pagano. The night begins at 8 pm with a $15 admission fee that, as always, goes directly to the artists. Also, we’d like to thank Pannone Lopes Devereaux & West LLC for helping sponsor this event to ensure the performers are well compensated for their brilliance. Lastly, since it is Halloween feel free to dress up in your scariest, wackiest costumes to help make the night even better!
Hope I didn’t break your brains with all this info, but I imagine you’re all as excited as I am for these great shows coming up. See you all at the October 3rd show at AS220

Live Bait @ 95 Empire Black Box
Oct 3 @ 10:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Back to School

Although it pains the author of this press release to write this
headline, let alone even think about the Fall whilst he is firmly
enmeshed in a lush, languid Summer, the fact remains that word of
September’s Live Bait must get out. The show has taken August off, not
only to get to the beach, but to regroup and come back strong: tanned,
rested and ready, if you will. So… with renewed vigor, a brand new
pencil box, and a nod to all the new and returning college students
who have been such a loyal and vital part of the show, Live Bait hits
September hard with a theme that can mean so many different things to
so many different people: “Schooled.”

If anyone has a true-life story that in any way, shape or form fits
September’s theme, “Schooled,” they merely have to come to Live Bait,
put their name in the fishbowl and, when their name is called, come up
and tell it. (Just so long as it is a story and it is true.) Please
keep in mind: no notes, no rants, no stand-up routines, and there is a
six minute time limit. And of course, as always, all are more than
welcome to simply sit back and listen.

Live Bait is hosted by Phil “The Host” Goldman, with banter, musical
accompaniment and monthly theme song by Jerry “The Professor”

Live Bait! @ 95 Empire
Oct 3 @ 10:00 pm – 11:30 pm

The Horror… The Horror…

Halloween is coming a bit early this year to Live Bait as we present a celebration (and perhaps exorcism) of the real ghouls, goblins, monsters and fears that haunt us all. Everyone is invited to tell their stories, wear their masks and don their costumes. Classic Halloween candy (circus peanuts, candy corn and everyone’s favorite: apples with or without razors) will be distributed. The theme will be “The Horror… The Horror…”

If anyone has a true-life story that in any way, shape or form fits October’s theme, they merely have to come to Live Bait, put their name in the fishbowl and, when their name is called, come up and tell it. (Just so long as it is a story, true and very very scary.) Please keep in mind: no notes, no rants, no stand-up routines, and there is a six minute time limit. And of course, as always, all are more than welcome to simply sit back and listen.

There really won’t be apples with razors.

Live Bait is hosted by Phil “The Ghost” Goldman, with banter, musical accompaniment and monthly theme song by Jerry “The Nutty Professor” Gregoire.
