If you would rather hang out on your mat than at the gym, and if plies sound better than squats, make Stretch and Strength part of your routine.  Drawing from Pilates, yoga and dance, this class promises a total body workout toning muscle, building flexibility and even throws in a little cardio.  All fitness and experience levels welcome!  Bring your own mat or use one of ours.

Myah Shein is a dance and theatre artist from Chicago. She has trained in a variety of contemporary dance techniques, as well as maintaining a person practice that includes yoga and Pilates. As a founding artistic ensemble member with Red Tape Theatre, she served as resident choreographer and a performer, and performed in work for independent choreographers around Chicago. Outside of dancing, Myah produced the annual Chicago Fringe Artists Networking Night, served as dramaturg and assistant director for various store front companies, and is a makeup artist who designs for dance and theatre. Myah is the Public Relations and Advertising Manager for Trinity Repertory Company and holds a degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign in International Studies and French and a post-bac degree from the Dance Center of Columbia College in Dance with a focus in Dance Studies.

This open level class welcomes a wide spectrum of movers who want to explore fundamental physical connections and integrate those within expressive movement. The class begins on the floor in explorations of weight, momentum and range of motion in joints. Moving to a mid-level we will take time to condition the muscles within efficient patterns. In standing we investigate the dynamics of opposition in balance, gesture and weight shift to alas traverse the space across,  under and around.   All are welcome! 

Katie McNamara is a dance artist, a cook, a mother and a teacher. Along with her husband Olase Freeman, she co-directs their company, BaldSoul, within which they strive to find the locus where art and life coexist.  Their most recent work is parenting a beautiful boy, Kayin Effie. Katie spent her preliminary professional years in Philadelphia where she danced with Group Motion, Scrap Performance Group and Leah Stein Dance Company. She was deeply influenced by the city’s diverse artistic community and the raw spontaneity of it‘s stage.  During this time she also co-founded and directed the Bald Mermaids, named “best new modern dance company” by Philadelphia’s City Paper.  Her work has been shown at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Philadelphia’s Painted Bride Art Center, the Carriage House, Galapagos Art Space, the Projekt Theatre (Dresden, Germany) as well as during the Silesian Dance Festival (Bytom, Poland).  Her recent choreographic residencies include Rhode Island College Dance Company, Providence College Dance Company, Roger Williams University and Salve Regina University.  Katie currently teaches Dance Composition at Dean College and has had a fourteen year career as a Pilates teacher-certified through Pilates Method Alliance. She is pursuing a MFA in dance at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Celestial Shore’s first album 10x is out now via Hometapes/Local Singles Records. Mixed by Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), 10x expands on the band’s initial EPs with more fully-developed song structures, offering more room to employ the odd beats, muscly breakneck spazzouts, and ecstatic wind-up reveries that distinguish their sound and feel.



 Tapestries’s power lies in presence. This four piece carefully crafts sonic spaces reminiscent of the empty lots and derelict warehouses of their hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. Tapestries released their self-titled album in 2013 after a year of recording with strictly analog equipment, capturing specific moments of a microcosmic social atmosphere, whether it be passing cars or footsteps upon an auditorium floor. Drawing influences from a diverse palette of styles including British Invasion, experimental modern rock, blues, and ambient soundscapes, singer and songwriter Mike DeCosta crafts a unique and personal aural vision encapsulating a wide array of emotion and experience. The band’s summer of 2014 tour incorporates not only Tapestries’s most recent recorded work, but a solid back catalogue, reflecting a depth and a drive which has shown to move both solitary headphone listeners and live crowds.

AS220 welcomes Benjamin Lundberg,  Artist-in-Residence for September

“Lundberg / Torres-Sanchez” is a three-part re-imagining of Benjamin Lundberg’s political identity. The body of the artist transforms between and within each part, standing in opposition to culturally perceived paradoxes: American and Colombian; Latino and white; assimilated and displaced; orphaned and privileged. Performed as a triptych, the three parts become Lundberg/Torres-Sanchez, a piece that refigures the religious, governmental, personal and social rituals that use my body as a filter for communally defined expectations and vocabularies.Lundberg/Torres-Sanchez resists the use of binaries as an acceptable tool by which to understand identity by proposing a version of self that is volatile and cyclical.

This performance will take place on Thurs, Sept 25th, from 7-8pm, at 95 Empire Street, Providence, RI. Free attendance.

Benjamin Lundberg is a Colombian, New York City based performer. Lundberg creates shared spaces of inquiry by lending his body and personal archive as a site through which viewers channel, refract and transmit their own desires to collaboratively conjure messages and meanings about identity. His work has appeared in spaces including the Hemispheric Institute’s Encuentros in São Paulo & Montreal, at Zona 30 in Lima, live streamed from the Fitness Center for Arts and Tactics in Bushwick to El Bunker in La Paz, Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, Mount Holyoke College, Brooklyn International Performance Art Festival, Panoply Performance Laboratory, Bowery Poetry Club, La MaMa E.T.C., and the Morgan Library & Museum. He is currently an Artist-in-Residence at AS220 in Providence. Benjamin is a founding member of the EmergeLAB @ BAX, and is a member of the 2012 EMERGENYC cohort at the Hemispheric Institute of Performance & Politics.

As described by Eric Ehn, Chair, Theatre Arts and Performance Studies, ROO  is a sibling of FOO (the AS220 restaurant) – a practical foray into ambient art and hospitality-as-spectacle. A lo-fi and sudden way to generate cross disciplinary art pan-programmatically (pulling Brown and Trinity Theater MFA programs into tighter embrace), the venue is entirely student run. The collective produces what they like when they like, and as they like, in cooperation with 95 Empire.

September 13: Modern Dance with Bill Evans
The Evans Approach to Contemporary Dance Technique is a pedagogical method based on my four-decade investigation of Laban Bartenieff Movement Studies. Its fundamentals are: Trust, Relationship, Active learning, Validation, Differentiation, Student Empowerment, and Teacher Regeneration. I will share an introduction to my technique and pedagogy in the master class. It will include improvisation and an extended dance phrase and be appropriate for intermediate and advanced dancers of all ages.

September 27: Modern Dance with Danielle Davidson
This contemporary/post-modern technique workshop combines pedagogical ideas from Limón, Release techniques, Gaga technique and a dash of ballet! I hope to facilitate these ideas rather than teach them. Together we will aim at developing a balance between force and freedom, a directed impulse, a clarity of intention in performance and the release of weight in movement. After a short Gaga-based warm-up, we will approach challenging material and physicality using set exercises based on gravity, momentum and spirals. Emphasis will be placed on a tactile connection with the floor, the relationship between the body’s axis and space, and the equilibrium between muscular engagement, efficiency, and effort. Participants will explore new pleasures as they play with the forces of gravity, levity, momentum and inertia.

October 11: Modern Dance with Jessica Howard
This modern dance based class embraces technique and improvisation skills. Participants learn to embody a state of presence and grace. We will focus on moving with efficiency while testing endurance and increasing stamina. This dance practice moves in and out of the floor, upside down to right side up, and from the inside out.  This class encourages letting go, having fun and embraces confidence on the dance floor (wherever that may be)!

October 25: Modern Dance with Sydney Skybetter
Beginning with a comprehensive warmup of the spine using contemporary Bartenieff technique, and incorporating phrase material from recent works, Sydney Skybetter’s company class introduces the diversity of contemporary movement vocabularies in context of the skybetter & associates repertory. This class investigates how anatomy and movement mechanics interface with the qualitative aspects of dance performance, culminating with phrase work emphasizing floor work, jumping, musicality and personal performance choices.

November 8: Modern Dance with Lindsay Caddle Lapointe
Modern dance  comes from the individual and the past that lives inside them.  For Lindsay, influences from yoga, improvisation, other approaches to modern dance, ballet technique, jazz and hip hop expressions are molded into what she calls her in-motion modern dance style. Students in her classes learn through repetition and the experience of moving, following along until it feels correct for their bodies.  Slowly, the steps tack onto one another, building the dance phrase.  It is her goal for people to dance as long in their lives as possible.  In keeping this goal she reminds students to relax, find proper placement and rely on the support of the floor.

November 22: Ballet with Kristi Liu
Hoping to share insights of this art form using examples of every day life, this class will be designed to build a stronger technique through visual thinking. Using an anatomical approach, the class will emphasize on the body mechanics through fun and simple combinations. This will allow progression to more complex combinations that will get you freely moving through the music and into the space.

December 13: “Find the Self, Further the Whole”- Improvisation with Shura Baryshnikov
In this improvisation workshop, we will work to strike balance between individual voice and collective action.  Designed to integrate performers of all disciplines, we will work with movement, sound and language to discover free and authentic impulse.  Actively listen and witness in order to cultivate clear intention.  Clarity will propel us through time and space.


SPG_8735Shura Baryshnikov is a Rhode Island-based educator, improvisor, dancer and movement designer.  With a background in physical theatre, contemporary dance and and a range of improvisation practices, Shura seeks the creative space where these mediums overlap to inspire somatic exploration and performer versatility.  Shura has worked as a choreographer and movement consultant for Trinity Repertory Company, The Wilbury Theatre Group, Bridge Repertory Theater, Elemental Theatre Collective and on a number of Brown/Trinity MFA productions;  her performance work has been presented by the RISD Museum, the Providence Fringe Festival and in Earthdance’s Moving Arts Lab.  As a freelance dancer, she has performed in works by Heidi Henderson, Ali Kenner-Brodsky and Betsy Miller and with Aerplaye Dance, American Dance Legacy Initiative, Festival Ballet Providence and Lostwax Multimedia Dance.  Shura is a Teaching Associate in the Brown/Trinity MFA Programs, a faculty member at Festival Ballet Providence School and has also taught movement at at MIT, Dean College, Rhode Island College and at Earthdance in Plainfield, MA. Shura has studied Viewpoints and Suzuki with Anne Bogart and SITI Company and is also actively engaged in the practice of Ruth Zeporah’s Action Theater.  These methods, as well as a rich Contact Improvisation practice, inform Shura’s pursuit of embodiment and honesty in performance and in the classroom.
photo 4Danielle Davidson received her early training at L’Ecole Superieure de Ballet du Quebec. Upon graduation,  she was invited to join Le Jeune Ballet, and toured Europe and North America, working with internationally-renowned choreographers such as Thierry Malandain/Ballet Biarritz, Jean ­Grand Maitre/Alberta Ballet, Hélène Blackburn/Cas Public, Francoise Vaussenat, Brian MacDonald and Dominique Khalfouni/Opera de Paris. In 2001, while earning her Theatre Diploma at George Brown College in Toronto, she began her career as an  independent dance artist. Danielle has since worked with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, The Banff Festival Company, Opera Ontario, REAson d’Etre, Ballet Ouest, AmpleMan Danse and Le Groupe Apogée/Debra  Brown. She is currently working with Productions Fila 13/Lina Cruz on a new work that will be presented in January 2015. Danielle is also a teacher and dance maker and has been the guest choreographer at FDanse Compagnie since 2011. She has been commissioned to set new works on SBDC, DanseKF, 360 Degré Danse and  for Concordia University’s Casa Cares Fundraiser. She has presented her work at the fFIDA (Fringe Festival of Independent Dance Artists) in Toronto and at Le Festival International de la Danse, in Montréal at La Place des Arts. She is recipient of Le Prix du Jury from Le Festival International de Danse Encore.

BEDCO celebrated its 40th anniversary in April, 2014. It has performed in all 50 states, throughout Mexico and Canada, and in 22 other countries. It was among the most-booked companies in the U.S. for several years under the Dance Touring and Artist-in-the-Schools Programs of the National Endowment for the Arts. William founded the Evans Rhythm Tap Ensemble in 1992. He was formerly artistic coordinator, choreographer and dancer for Utah’s Repertory Dance Theatre and artistic director of Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers and its professional training programs. He has choreographed more than 250 works for more than 60 professional companies throughout the world and been awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship, numerous grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and more than 75 other awards from public and private arts agencies in the U.S. and Canada.His book, Reminiscences of a Dancing Man:  A Photographic Journey of a Life in Dance, was in 2005. He received the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and two Awards for Excellence in Dance from the Albuquerque Arts Alliance He was named National Dance Association Scholar/Artist and is one of only three honorary members of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. He was voted one of the three top world tap dance artists in the most recent Dance Magazine Readers Poll. His most significant life’s work has been as a dance educator. He is professor of dance emeritus at both the University of New Mexico and the State University of New York College at Brockport. He is currently a professor of dance and artist in residence at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts. He founded the Bill Evans Summer Institute of Dance in 1977 and has taught thousands of students and teachers in the past 38 years. He created the Evans Method of Teaching Modern Dance Technique, which is passed on through a four-summer certification program. He was awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Dance Education Organization and Dance Teacher Magazine.He earned BA and MFA degrees from the University of Utah and is a Certified Laban Movement Analyst. 554100_545735368786807_505597106_nLindsay Caddle LaPointe is a dancer, teacher, videographer and video editor.  She received her BA in Dance/Performance from Roger Williams University and her MFA in Dance and Technology from The Ohio State University. She has taught dance at The Ohio State University, Ohio University and Muskingum University and currently teaches courses at Regis College. LaPointe has performed in over 60 works in Rhode Island, Boston, MA and Columbus, OH.  She is a company member of Quicksilver Dance under the direction of Mariah Steele and a performer for Audra Carabetta and Peter DiMuro. In 2010 she started her own video production company, Linden Tree Productions, which provides video support to dancers and artists. During the summer, she works at the Bates Dance Festival as part of the video production team.

JessicaHowardJessica Howard is the Founder and Managing Director of The Heron Dance Yoga & Meditation Studio. She is Steward of the P.O.T.E.G.P. Spiritual Guidance center as well as apprenticing under Greg Squillante in the studies of spirituality, meditation and world religions. Jessica graduated with her Bachelor of the Arts in Theatre and Dance and recipient of the Alta Lu Townes Memorial Endowment and the Charles Hildebrandt Award in 2009. She has continued education in various forms of healing and mind-body awareness through workshops and Festivals that include: Mark Morris Dance Group Dance for PD training, Ideokinesis, Bates Dance Festival, Southern Vermont Dance Festival, Cultivate! festival amongst other professional retreats. Jessica is a lead instructor for the POTEGP Instructor Training Program, she is a certified E-RYT 200 with the Yoga Alliance. Jessica is an independent performance artist & dance educator. She is on her fourth season performing with Lorraine Chapman, the Company and currently performing with Ali Kenner Brodsky & Co. Jessica has presented her own work in Cambridge MA, Keene NH, NYC, and Bethlehem, NH. 

KristiLiuA native of the Washington DC area, Kristina Liu began her dance training at the Conservatory Ballet in Reston, VA, under the direction of Julia Cziller Redick.  Starting at age 13, Kristina attended summer programs at Eglevsky Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Orlando Ballet. Kristina was accepted into the prestigious dance program at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN, where she earned her BFA in Dance Performance and graduated in May 2013. After graduation, Kristina joined the Festival Ballet of Providence, under the direction of Mihailo Djuric. She is also part of the faculty at Rising Stars Dance Academy, where she teaches ballet and private lessons. For more information:

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Boston Center for the Arts, Jacob’s Pillow and the Joyce Theater. As a Founding Partner with the Edwards & Skybetter | Change Agency, he has consulted on issues of change management and technology for The National Ballet of Canada, Barnes & Noble, New York University and The University of Southern California among illustrious others. He lectures on everything from dance history to cultural futurism, and is a frequent speaker atJuilliard, Boston Conservatory, Dance/USA, and OPERA America.
