Artist’s Talk and Ekphrasis Workshop
in Conjunction with 100 Ways An Old Artist Can Die
AS220, Main Gallery
Wednesday, December 17, 2014
5:00 to 7:00 PM
John Kotula will be discussing the concept and presentation of his exhibit and reflecting on some of the artwork. This will be followed by a writing workshop conducted by Kim Baker.
Have you ever stood in front of a work of art and pondered the story being told on canvas and unfolding just off canvas? Would you like to attempt to write about what you see and what you don’t see?
In this workshop, we will discuss an ancient poetic form called ekphrasis, or writing inspired by art.  Using AS220’s exhibit 100 Ways an Old Artist Can Die, we will examine various pieces in the show and then talk together about our interpretations of the story in what we see.  Then, we will create our own stories about what we see and share those stories with each other as you feel comfortable.   This workshop welcomes anyone who wants to look at art together and learn to tell the stories of it in poetry. Prose writers, journal writers, bloggers, and non- writers are also welcomed.
The artist’s talk and the workshop are free and open to the public.

In standing we investigate the dynamics of opposition in balance, gesture and weight shift to alas traverse the space across,  under and around.   All are welcome!

Katie McNamara is a dance artist, a cook, a mother and a teacher. Along with her husband Olase Freeman, she co-directs their company, BaldSoul, within which they strive to find the locus where art and life coexist.  Their most recent work is parenting a beautiful boy, Kayin Effie. Katie spent her preliminary professional years in Philadelphia where she danced with Group Motion, Scrap Performance Group and Leah Stein Dance Company. She was deeply influenced by the city’s diverse artistic community and the raw spontaneity of it‘s stage.  During this time she also co-founded and directed the Bald Mermaids, named “best new modern dance company” by Philadelphia’s City Paper.  Her work has been shown at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Philadelphia’s Painted Bride Art Center, the Carriage House, Galapagos Art Space, the Projekt Theatre (Dresden, Germany) as well as during the Silesian Dance Festival (Bytom, Poland).  Her recent choreographic residencies include Rhode Island College Dance Company, Providence College Dance Company, Roger Williams University and Salve Regina University.  Katie currently teaches Dance Composition at Dean College and has had a fourteen year career as a Pilates teacher-certified through Pilates Method Alliance. BEYOND WRESTLING PRESENTS – Pro Wrestling Anonymous: Raising Awareness for UPWADS (Unconditional Pro Wrestling Addiction Syndrome) @ AS220 Main Stage

Pro Wrestling Anonymous: Raising Awareness for UPWADS (Unconditional Pro Wrestling Addiction Syndrome)

Are you ashamed to admit you’re a wrestling fan but you just can’t get enough of a the sadism, the snarling, and the spandex? Well, don’t feel bad. We *make* wrestling here at Beyond Wrestling and we still find ourselves red-faced more often than not, and I ain’t talking about the proverbial crimson mask, if you catch my drift. But hey, that’s part of the charm, right? And get this – now there’s a place for people like us!

AS220 will be opening their doors for Providence-area wrestling fans on Saturday, December 27th from 9pm to 1am. This event is specifically designed for those of us who unconditionally love wrestling no matter how bad THIS BUSINESS-UH treats us. For one night only we have a safe haven where we can proudly congregate, champion the profound cultural impact of the genre, and bitch about Charlotte getting jobbed out to Nattie Neidhart on RAW.

ALL AGES are welcome so if you know anyone who lives in their parents basement within driving distance to Providence, RI, give them a heads up and a too sweet while you’re at it. This is a FREE event, but we highly recommend you bring a piece of wrestling memorabilia with you for a sports entertainment-inspired Yankee swap to kick off the festivities. Like, if someone buys you “Batista: I Walk Alone” on DVD for Christmas, maybe you can trade it for a best of Jumbo Tsuruta bootleg or something.

Throughout the evening we’re going to be showing select matches from 2014 Beyond Wrestling live events, providing director-style commentary on the behind-the-scene happenings, and answering fan question about how pro wrestling is made. In between bouts you can don the lucha mask and anonymously confess your #PROWRESLOVE to the Jerichoholics in the room. If the libations are flowing liberally we might even cap off the evening with an “open mic” wrestling promo contest with some pretty nifty prizes on the line. Oh, and you never know when a “human ring” match might pop up!

So whatchugonnadobrother when AS220 and Beyond Wrestling make a modest attempt to unite the closeted wrestling fans of Providence?
