After Effects is Adobe’s professional motion graphics and compositing software for video editors, designers, animators, and 3D artists. This four-session workshop will provide you with a basic understanding of the software to get your projects started. Attendees will get 8 hours to use in the media lab outside of class. Modern Dance For Every Level with Jamie Arnold and Stephanie Turner // Wednesdays @ 6:30-8pm // $13 per class; $60 for 6 classes
Class begins with a warm-up that incorporates yoga and breathwork with gentle movements of the spine before moving on to phrase material. A series of short phrases will then be explored, where students are encouraged to play and experiment with how his/her individual body prefers to move through the demonstrated movements. The phrases include elements like directional changes, movement through space, spirals, rotation, lines, momentum, energy and floorwork. Movement may carry over from previous classes and blend into the dance material. Each phrase that is developed will lead to a rich and colorful dance toward the end of class. Jamie Arnold is a certified and licensed Kripalu Yoga guide and dancer working out of Warwick RI and graduate of Rhode Island College with a B.A. in Dance Performance, where she was a member of the Rhode Island College Dance Company. Jamie attended the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC and was in residency at The Dragon’s Egg Studio in Ledyard, CT and has performed in Trisha Brown’s Floor of the Forest at the ICA in Boston and Between Movement Contemporary Dance Company.

Learn digital editing and how to print edited photographic images using the newest Adobe Photoshop. Eight hours of personal lab time are included. We encourage you to bring your own files to work on during the workshop. You may use our media lab computers (brand new!) or bring your own laptop with Adobe Photoshop (Free 30-day trials are available online). This is a three-session workshop. Attendees will get 8 hours to use in the media lab outside of class. No experience is necessary but should be familiar with computers.
After spending the last decade apart Justin Marra, Brian Decoteaux, and Allan Furtado reunite as Survivors of The Kraken bringing the Marra’s folky acoustic catalogue to life in a sonic explosion; a little blues, some rock n’ roll, a lot of sound!

In this workshop we will make things move with the Arduino. We will build a simply robot project that moves around does awesome robot stuff.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to screen printing as participants design, print, and exchange a multiple color print with a maximum dimension of 8″x10″. The morning will be dedicated to creating hand drawn stencils focusing on the design of a multiple color print. Participants spend the afternoon learning proper printing techniques, troubleshooting, and tips for registration. The workshop will end with a print exchange.
The folks from Devine’s Diner will host this popular session at AS220 on Saturdays from 4-7 pm. Come downtown for dinner at the cafe or just grab a drink and listen to the tunes… All ages welcome!

Clearing the Decks and Building Rafts is a one-week joint venture of the Words Progress Administration and Bonky Dolls Puppetry featuring puppetry, plays and other peformances of David Higgins/ those who have a relationship with David Higgins. The variety of the week’s performances will range from puppet shows that are being retired to samples of new works. The title for the collection comes from Higgins’ desire to say goodbye to some older works and hello to some newer works. Maintaining this spirit of duality, there will be a workshop running throughout the week: “D(ing)IY with Objects and/or Words,” focusing on the creation of solo puppet shows.

The Providence Possibly Poetry Pitch
Unlike a slam, a poetry pitch is an evening of performed words that the writer or performer has the opportunity to ask a question of the audience. In exchange for pitching a poem into the mix, the audience is expected to pitch in some feedback after the readings. In this case, the Words Progress Administration seeks to expand this process to artists who have pieces that may be beyond that which thet consider poetry.

Performances will include Baggage, a puppet show using the power of helium and rare earth elements and work-in-progress excerpts from Brandon Shaw’s upcoming dance epic, Orestes.
Thursday 8pm:
The Premiere Puppetry Performance Invitational
Among other unknown elements, this evening will feature incredibly brand new works of puppetry by those participating in the workshop this week (and others who responded by Monday to this open invitation).

DingIY with Objects And/Or Words
If you like the idea of the “it” in “DIY” being solo puppet shows, check out this workshop, which will focus on the two main elements of solo puppet show creation: the words and the objects. The words may never be spoken and the object may be your inspiration for your words or the response to your words. Each of these elements should be considered separately and together. Folks who have words that they feel might be served through the manipulation of objects and folks who have objects that seem suited to narrative presentation are encouraged to join. Folks who have either more concrete or nebulous inclinations are also encouraged to join. Folks coming from regions visual or textual are welcome.
This workshop will consist of 2 three hour sessions:
Session1: The Spirit Of the Object and By any Object Necessary
The first part of the session, the Spirit of the Object, will focus on listening to materials. We will play with a few wildly different puppet types and materials. We will also explore the basics of intention and discover the emotional potential of very simple objects. The second part of the first session will start with looking at puppetry from the writer’s starting point. Through hands-on exercises, we will expand the possibilities of how to
express the writer’s words and consider the effects of these different expressions on the writing.
Session2: Working Towards Discomfort and Back Again
The second session will start with everyone’s proposal for a performance and whatever they have created over the past two days as homework. After some supportive critique, participants will consider the elements needed to complete their shows commence working on the element needed that is furthest from where they started. After cracking that nut, it is up to you and race back to where you started, put together your show and, if you want to, present it that night.
A one-hour beginner Vinyasa yoga that focuses on the foundations of classical Vinyasa flow, emphasizing movement and breath as synchronized experience. Attention to fundamental asana (postures) will prepare students for their flow sequence and is designed to help beginners develop their own practice. Only $5 per class!
Intermediate/Advanced Modern Dance with Katie McNamara // Mondays @ 7-8:30pm // $13 per class; $60 for 6 classes
This modern dance based class embraces technique, improvisation and composition skills. Participants learn to embody a state of presence and grace. We will focus on moving with efficiency while testing endurance and increasing stamina. This dance practice moves in and out of the floor, upside down to right side up, and from the inside out.

For the May Geek Dinner, we may have the perfect Providence startup story!
When his 2-year-old son was diagnosed with diabetes, former jewelry industry executive Angelo Pitassi Jr. started learning about medical alert bracelets. He was unimpressed to say the least. In short order, Angelo partnered with technologist Christopher Melo, and HealthID was born.
Today the Jewelry District-based startup is poised at the intersection of the jewelry business and healthcare technology, and is accepting pre-orders for its first product — HealthID Profile (or “HIP”) Bands. HIP enables first responders to pull up critical, in-depth, current health information from NFC-based bands onto a web/mobile interface. The wearer can also manage all aspects of their personal health scenario while on the go.
On Wednesday, the Co-Founders CEO Angelo Pitassi Jr. and CTO Christopher Melo will tell the HealthID story, demonstrate their HIP product and give a sneak peek of where they’re headed next.

- The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant.
- Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 30 min presentation/q&a around 6:30pm. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking…
- It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whoever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great)

Rhode Island’s Fucking Invincible just announced their first US tour ever plus a new EP. The band features members of Daughters, Dropdead and Soul Control. The record will be released May 14th via Atomic Action. They recorded the EP, which is entitled Downtown is Dead, at Lupine Sound in Pawtucket, RI. Jay Maas mastered the album at Getaway Recording Studios. You can stream the track Too Much Black now on their bandcamp.
The day after the record drops, the band hits the road for their first US Tour, which starts with a hometown record release show at AS220. They’ll stay on the road for two weeks.

Clearing the Decks and Building Rafts is a one-week joint venture of the Words Progress Administration and Bonky Dolls Puppetry featuring puppetry, plays and other peformances of David Higgins/ those who have a relationship with David Higgins. The variety of the week’s performances will range from puppet shows that are being retired to samples of new works. The title for the collection comes from Higgins’ desire to say goodbye to some older works and hello to some newer works. Maintaining this spirit of duality, there will be a workshop running throughout the week: “D(ing)IY with Objects and/or Words,” focusing on the creation of solo puppet shows.

Come on by and enjoy a short piece or two, play with a few puppet like objects, listen to the proposition for performance centered around the intersection of humans and the structures they live, work, and play in, get the skinny on the rest of the week, RSVP for the Pitch on Tuesday eve or the Invitational on Thursday eve (consider yourself invited to both), and grab a drink (either during or after TBD).
Tuesday 7pm:
The Providence Possibly Poetry Pitch
Unlike a slam, a poetry pitch is an evening of performed words that the writer or performer has the opportunity to ask a question of the audience. In exchange for pitching a poem into the mix, the audience is expected to pitch in some feedback after the readings. In this case, the Words Progress Administration seeks to expand this process to artists who have pieces that may be beyond that which thet consider poetry.
Wednesday 8pm:
Lighter Than Air, Heavier than Hades
Performances will include Baggage, a puppet show using the power of helium and rare earth elements and work-in-progress excerpts from Brandon Shaw’s upcoming dance epic, Orestes.
Thursday 8pm:
The Premiere Puppetry Performance Invitational
Among other unknown elements, this evening will feature incredibly brand new works of puppetry by those participating in the workshop this week (and others who responded by Monday to this open invitation).
Friday 8pm:
Blood From a Turnip
Just like a late night puppet salon, but it’s at eight.

Description of Workshop
DingIY with Objects And/Or Words
If you like the idea of the “it” in “DIY” being solo puppet shows, check out this workshop, which will focus on the two main elements of solo puppet show creation: the words and the objects. The words may never be spoken and the object may be your inspiration for your words or the response to your words. Each of these elements should be considered separately and together. Folks who have words that they feel might be served through the manipulation of objects and folks who have objects that seem suited to narrative presentation are encouraged to join. Folks who have either more concrete or nebulous inclinations are also encouraged to join. Folks coming from regions visual or textual are welcome.
This workshop will consist of 2 three hour sessions:
Session1: The Spirit Of the Object and By any Object Necessary
The first part of the session, the Spirit of the Object, will focus on listening to materials. We will play with a few wildly different puppet types and materials. We will also explore the basics of intention and discover the emotional potential of very simple objects. The second part of the first session will start with looking at puppetry from the writer’s starting point. Through hands-on exercises, we will expand the possibilities of how to
express the writer’s words and consider the effects of these different expressions on the writing.
Session2: Working Towards Discomfort and Back Again
The second session will start with everyone’s proposal for a performance and whatever they have created over the past two days as homework. After some supportive critique, participants will consider the elements needed to complete their shows commence working on the element needed that is furthest from where they started. After cracking that nut, it is up to you and race back to where you started, put together your show and, if you want to, present it that night.

Contact Improv with Shura Baryshnikov and Stephanie Turner // first and third Saturday of each month // Class @ 10-11am and Open Jam @ 11-12:30pm // $10 – $15; $15 for both, $10 to join the jam
Contact improvisation is a dance technique in which points of physical contact provide the starting point for exploration through movement improvisation. Class will help you learn the basics of the practice, which includes rolling, falling, being upside down, following a rolling point of contact, supporting and giving weight to a partner. Then you will be ready to join the open jam!

The class covers basic shop set up as well as best practices and tips for successful online selling via Etsy.com We will start with a digital presentation that covers the main aspects of Etsy as they relate to sellers as well as buyers. From there we will dive into listing, tagging, optimizing and general selling tips and tricks.
The class will be taught by Danielle Spurge–owner, operator and chief executive crafter at The Merriweather Council – a very small business that specializes in custom hand embroidery. For 2.5 years she has been selling her creative products on Etsy.com and has maintained a bran presence and built a reputation within that community. She was recently trained at Etsy HQ to teach this Etsy 101 class which will empower artists to overcome intimidation and get started selling on Etsy.

Stephanie has also danced with choreographers Matthew Brokoff, Marcus Galante, Mary Miller and Felice Lesser and also worked in Cabaret, performing at The Lido in Paris and Jubliee in Las Vegas.

Doble Filo, or “double-edged” in English, is described as experimental hip-hop with a feel-good vibe. Members rap over a backdrop that shifts from drum and bass to techno. They have been compared to Dilated Peoples, and The Amorphous. Despite their hip-hop orientation, Doble Filo’s fan base is not limited to a hip-hop audience. Although not all members originate from the Alamar area of Havana, the epicentre of Cuban hip-hop, their presence there is significant. The group shares credit with fellow Cuban hip-hop pioneers Obsesion for starting the multidisciplinary art collective La Fabrik.
They won the grand prize at the 1996 Alamar Rap Festival, after which they decided to make Alamar their headquarters. Many of their songs are composed in an Alamar building called “Laboratorio 675”. Through its music, Doble Filo also aims to improve social conditions by encouraging listeners to find themselves. The members veer away from lyrics that advocate violence or belittle women. Their main philosophy is avoiding negativity.

This modern dance based class embraces technique, improvisation and composition skills. Participants learn to embody a state of presence and grace. We will focus on moving with efficiency while testing endurance and increasing stamina. This dance practice moves in and out of the floor, upside down to right side up, and from the inside out.

Print your own labels using the letterpress for canning and home-brewing beer. Then head over to the Labs to use the laser cutter to cut an elaborate frame.
This class will offer a brief introduction to both the letterpress and the laser cutter and how they can work together to make decorative labels. In order to be signed off to use one or both of these resources, you will need to take an Intro to Letterpress and/or Intro to the Laser Cutter workshop, or schedule a one-on-one session. If you already have experience with laser cutting or letterpress you can also show a portfolio of work to be signed off on the machines.
