Not About The Buildings Annual Spelling Bee @ AS220
Oct 17 @ 8:30 pm – Oct 18 @ 1:00 am

1512430_10150412591729987_8682889820583389107_n

The words start easy: wisdom, relish, and antler kicked off the 2013 Spelling Bee at AS220, but as the words got more challenging the thirty spellers began to falter. Particlecorral, and geriatric stumped nervous spellers in round 1, but by the end the last spellers standing struggled with brazilettereseda and anseriform. Mark Sawtelle of Providence finally won the competition, after runner-up Benjamin Legg stumbled on punaise

The competition, which ended after midnight, is an annual benefit for Providence-based literary events organization Not About The Buildings. The 2014 edition of the Bee will return to AS220 on Friday, October 17th. The competition begins at 9pm, although spellers are advised to arrive by 8:30 to guarantee a shot at the crown. It’s $7 to spell but free to watch, so spellers are encouraged to bring their own cheering sections. Audience members have the opportunity to win their own prizes over the course of the evening.

Founded by local writer Matthew Lawrence, Not About The Buildings promotes literary culture in local libraries, bookstores, and arts venues. In the past year Not About The Buildings has co-produced memoir-writing workshops at the Providence Athenaeum, marathon readings of very short novels at a west side gallery, and an all-ages diorama book report contest at Rochambeau Library.

Joining Lawrence on stage will be Kath Connolly, who will read definitions, and AS220’s own JP Reader, whose judgment will determine whether spellers will advance to the next round.

Matt The Knife’s “Otherworldly” @ 95 Empire Black Box
Oct 18 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

darkmtk(a4)---fixed

You’ve seen him all over television messing with minds… putting his life in danger… and elevating deception to an art.  But now you can see the intense mentalist & magician ‘Matt The Knife’ live and in-person!

Just in time for the Halloween season the award winning, 12X Guinness World Record breaking magician and mentalist is back in Providence for ONE NIGHT ONLY!

The ticket price will get you a seat – but you’ll only need the edge with this new one-man show (that’s not really one-man since it also involves YOU!). But be warned, since this sure as hell wasn’t what your Momma had in mind when she said that magic was great for all-ages. In fact, this jaw-dropping production that’s wickedly humorous, occasionally dark, and unapologetically irreverent is intended for an adult audience… and it has the content to back that up!

Throughout the show MTK will engage in heart stopping feats, use his advanced (and highly unorthodox) set of psychological techniques to both discern & influence thoughts, and present advanced sleight of hand all in his trademark witty and outlandish manner.

It combines a slew of completely new material along with some of the classic routines that have helped to make Matt who he is today.

So don’t wait to buy your tickets! It’s been nearly two years since Matt’s last sold-out run in Providence and who knows how long it will be until he’s back! So be ready to celebrate the Halloween season in the style that was intended and, moreover, be ready to have your mind blown!
