Since its founding in 2008, the community engineering and fabrication studio AS220 Labs has become a cornerstone of Providence’s innovation scene. Inside its walls, hundreds of makers and artists of all ages have learnt and expressed themselves with technologies ranging from 3d printing to folk electronics. And it’s about to get even better.

In 2015 AS220 Labs will double its successful Fab Academy class, a “distributed education” program in digital fabrication directed by Neil Gershenfeld of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms. In addition, its sister organization — AS220 Media Arts — will build out a highly complementary state-of-the-art media lab right across the hall.

On Wednesday the 21st, Director of AS220 Industries Shawn Wallace will give an update on all of the activity and art coming out of Labs, as well as a sneak peek at the goodness that the next few years have in store.

  • Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about AJAX, mash-ups, start-ups, new devices, innovative business models, interaction design, social computing, digital art, web services, etc. etc. etc.

Upcoming Class Info and Teacher Bios:

January 24: Modern Technique with Heidi Henderson

Heidi’s modern technique class prioritizes: paying attention deeply on a cellular level, find an efficient sense of center and then loosing it, reveling in the specificity of complex sequencing, dancing large loopy phrases, and feeling joy.

February 14: Modern Technique with Hollis Bartlett
Throughout my class, we will investigate the articulation of the arms, legs, and torso in order to integrate the whole body in motion.  The warm-up is designed to familiarize you with your body, which will allow us to progress into large energetic phrases.  My approach to movement is through dynamic energy rather than static forms, and I constantly play with traditional placement and wild abandonment.  I believe dancing is a lively communal experience and together we will sweat, groove, and let loose.

February 28: Modern Technique with Kellie Ann Lynch
This class is about virtuosity.  We’ll make friends with the floor; experience the world upside down; thrust ourselves through the space and spiral into new pathways. This class is an invitation to explore effort, to push beyond what is familiar in your bodies.  This class is also an invitation to connect with others through movement, to dance and to have fun!

March 14: Connect to Expand and Express with Farah Saleh
The class will explore one body part, the arm, while looking into its articulations, connections and movement initiations. We will start from small somatic exercises, then move to bigger and dynamic ones, to finish with improvisations and dance phrases that integrate the learnt connections, while taking the body to extreme physical places. Once the freedom of the interconnected body is established, states and images will be attributed to the movements to further enhance the body-mind relation.

April 11: Peter DiMuro info coming soon
April 25: Contemporary Ballet with Andrea Dawn Shelley info coming soon
May 9: Modern Technique Annie Kloppenberg info coming soon
