The BSS Youth in the Artist Statement workshop have been reviewing and interpreting each other's work. They have been reading contemporary writings and researching creative thinkers, while becoming familiar with the subconscious inspirations and individual influences that play a roll in their art making.
In analyzing their work the young artists are working to reveal ideas about the who, what, when, where, whys and hows that are relevant to their individual artistic process. The class encourages students to use written word to articulate and interpret concepts, which in turn serves as a personal dialect for them to share with the world. With the help of each other and Christine, they are learning to translate their creative motivations into a more universal language.

The Broad Street Studio youth are preparing their portfolios for this quarter
ending June 28. They are selecting their strongest work, produced in the visuals,
writing, and performance workshops. They also have the choice of including some of the work they have produced independently.
Norma Anderson, the Portfolio Coordinator is helping the students in selecting work, preparing resumes, and compiling these to include an Artist's Statement which they are producing in Christine's Artist Statement workshop.
The Portfolio Workshop runs from 4pm to 8pm every Thursday. Binders, Art work Portfolios, and other key materials are provided, and photography and Tech assistance are in-house so that each participant will each eventually have their own portfolio represented on the Broad Street Studio link in digital format. ]]>For the past three weeks some of the girls at Broad Street Studio have been working closely with literary activist Anne Elizabeth Moore, the Artist In Residence at AS220 for the month of May. The girls are assisting Anne with an ongoing project she has been working on independently called New Girl Law or Chbap Srei in Cambodian.
Together, with the first large group of young feminists in Cambodia, Moore has been working to rewrite a Cambodian document that was written in 1863 which dictates feminine culture in the country, the project will inevitably take the form of a letter pressed book as well as an audio book. The young women at Broad Street studio have been making zines inspired by the Cambodian girls' work as well as collaborating with Anne on doing some of the audio recordings that will be a part of the culmination of the Anne's project.
Proposal Deadline: May 30th Workshop Selection: June 9th
AS220 Broad Street Studio is calling for artists to teach weekly workshops for our upcoming quarter (July-September 2008). We are asking artists in various mediums to apply for this instructing opportunity by submitting the following:
(1) Resume
(2) Proposed Curriculum Must be laid out in template provided (send email to recieve)
(3) Examples and/or support material of artistic work All examples and support material must be copies. Do not provide us with original material. We will not be able to return it.
All three (3) parts of your submission must be delivered to the AS220 Broad Street Studio office by May 30th 6pm. (no exception)

How Workshops Are Selected: A committee of Broad Street Studio participants and staff will review the workshop submissions and make their selections.
Workshops Are Selected Based On The Following:
· Youth interest in art/curriculum
· Adequate space available for workshop
· Artistic diversity
· Clear agenda, weekly planning, and workshop outcome
· Artist with experience and supportive material
If selected, instructors must complete a background check in order to work with the AS220 Broad Street Studio Community.
Things To Know While Planning Your Submission:
· Workshops would take place in classroom-like settings
· Workshops would have no more then six-eight participants involved
· Workshops will meet once a week for two hour blocks
· Workshops would run for a three month period (July-Sept 08)
· Workshops should give participants product/material for personal portfolios
· Workshops end with a presentation at the BSS Showcase (Mid-Late Sept 08)

On Friday April 25th, Broad Street Studio Photo Mem Youth traveled to Pawtucket to attend mentor and teacher, Scott Lapham's opening exhibition at the Slater Mill Visitor's Center. The collaborative exhibition featured the work of Lewis Hine, who was responsible for documenting the working conditions in factories and mills in the early 1900's which became part of the records that inspired the reform of child labor conditions throughout the nation.
Hine's work was shown together with Lapham's photographs, which documented the same locations in their contemporary form, some of which have been tremendously transformed over time and others that are no longer in existence. As a whole, the show served to prove the potential behind the use of photographic art to not only document our surroundings but to bring public awareness to social issues of importance.

Txutxo, the artist in Residence at As220 for the month of April collaborated with some of the youth at Broad Street to refurbish and customize second hand furniture. Together they painted, screen-printed and airbrushed the pieces to give them new life. The pieces were on display and up for sale at this past weekend's Farmer's Market, where the Broad Street Studio Youth were able to exhibit and share their accomplishments with the rest of the community. Thanks to Txutxo who came from all the way from San Francisco to share his west coast skills and creative ideas with us in the studio!

We had great sessions during the break out, so many inspiring moments, beautiful weather, and to top all, we were artistically enriched with a performance by Nuttin?? But Stingz. They showed us their skill and passion and inspired us to think about the NEXT LEVEL for the Rhodeshow. The pictures below give you a taste of the fun we had. Thank you all again, and every business card I got from South Carolina will be getting a free CD of the music presented during he sessions. Thank you all.
