BSS UPDATE: ENTER WEEK 4 OF THE BROAD STREET BAND EXPERIMENT
Come this Tuesday at 3:30 when the Broad Street Band will be having a listening party in the performance space. As we enter week 4, our sound is slowly being formed as people bring in their own beats and samples of favorite summer jams. Check out some of the beats played.
Also we are still looking for some brave souls to fill out our horn section... interested?
Last Tuesday, we had a listening/watching party down in the as220 performance space with Evans (our Visuals cohort who also kills it on the hand drums,) Uriah, Kooma, Damien, Poet, Khary, Dennis and Anthony (ladies, where you at?!?) offering up examples of where music meets dance meets performative spectacle. Kooma and Damien offered up beats they'd written, and Khary stumped us all with a track from the 80s video game, the Last Dragon. Here's a sample of videos what we checked out as a group: Afro Cuban Rumba
Nortena Cumbia from Celso Pina y El Gran Silencio
Hypnotic Brass Band out of Chicago:

Stomp Videos that Kooma found:
Drum and Bass Church Rave also courtesy of Kooma:
Dennis also pulled up some capoeira, then he and Evans proceeded to demonstrate some of their moves which, come to think of it, would have also gone well to the Last Dragon soundtrack.
This Tuesday we will be doing another listening/viewing party downstairs from 3:30 - 4:30, looking at examples of street bands that know how to supplement their sound with some nice outfit flourishes. Music being only part of the street band equation we need to keep the look and feel of the band in mind as we shape up for July 9th's Elementary performance and FOO FEST on August 15th!
