AS220 recognized in The New York Times!

Providence Begins to See Its Future Around the Corner By Donna Paul

In The New York Times Wednesday, February 27, 2008

"AS220, a nonprofit artist group, currently owns and operates two buildings. Umberto Crenca founded the group at 220 Weybosset Street in 1985; the name, short for Artist Space 220, is supposed to evoke P. S. 1, the contemporary art center in Queens.

He began in a single room, but in 1993, Lucie Searle, a developer, assisted the organization in buying a 22,000-square-foot- building for $400,000. A second building was bought in 2005 using tax credits. AS220 is about to buy its third building for more than $1 million."

PROVIDENCE - On the second floor of AS220's Empire Street office, dreams are made.

This is where College Visions, an upstart nonprofit organization, helps high school students make college a reality.

College Visions is itself the vision of one man, Simon Moore, a Brown University graduate and Classical High School alumnus who believes that urban teenagers deserve the same help getting into college as their affluent peers.

Projo Gives Props to the Rhode Show!
Rhode Show: In Their Own Words By Rick Massimo

The Providence Journal Friday, June 15, 2007

PROVIDENCE -- When David Gonzalez leads lyric-writing workshops at the Broad Street Studio at AS220, he says he's got an ethic that he reinforces constantly to young students:

"Tell somebody something."

The self-titled debut CD of The Rhode Show, the youth hip-hop group that's an outgrowth of the Broad Street Studio, does just that.

While much of the hip-hop you can hear on the radio is, at best, intriguing pop, the music of the Rhode Show inherits the genre's best traditions - personal perspectives on life as it's lived here and now.

"David Brussat: Artful restoration at the Dreyfus"
The Providence Journal, April 26th, 2007. By David Brussat
WITH THE OPENING next Tuesday of 14 artists' lofts and 10 work studios at the renovated Dreyfus Hotel, on Mathewson Street in downtown Providence, the AS220 artist cooperative proves again that art can charm power into housing those who bite the hand that feeds them.

The artists moving in on May 1 - three painters, two photographers, a poet, a playwright, a printer, a DJ, an actor-dancer-writer, a writer and performer of electronic music who is also a jeweler, a graphic artist-musician-writer, a writer-pastry artist, even a hot-air-balloon maker - are among the select, or shall we say the lucky, even though they are mostly early in their artistic careers and make little money. An income ceiling limits eligibility for the lofts, which rent from $410 to $850 a month, including the most expensive three at market rates. A guiding hand (assisted by the AS220 residential review panel) has drawn them to the Dreyfus, where they will live in a struggling artist's version of the lap of luxury.

"Making Space for New Art"
The College Hill Independent, March 15th, 2007. By Chelsea Rudman
Linda King had reached a crossroads. She was 50 years old and felt like she was aging three for every one that passed. The year she spent living in an apartment in Boston's Piano Factory had been taxing: walking up stairs left her gasping for breath, and she was, a doctor told her, on the verge of a heart attack. "My heart was swollen," King says. "What a metaphor!" Working 50 hours a week at two jobs to pay $1250 per month for rent left no time for making art. "I wasn't developing as an artist," King says. "I was deteriorating."

King, a dancer and poet, asked herself what she was willing to sacrifice to place art back at the center of her life. The answer, she decided, was "anything." So she moved in with her mother in Providence to try and start again. Only after attending to her financial needs through jobs at the Trinity Repertory Company and the Providence Journal could she focus on her art.

Photographic Memory and Scott Lapham in the News!
PHOTOGRAPHIC VISION By Arthur Kimball-Stanley, Journal Staff Writer

In The Providence Journal Sunday, March 18, 2007

"I was going nowhere until I had photography in my life," Alan Martinez, 19, from South Providence, said. "I wasn't doing anything with myself."

That was more than three years ago, Martinez said, a time when he was well on his way to dropping out of Hope High School. But he was lucky enough to stumble on a program being offered by AS220, the community arts center located in downtown Providence, called Photographic Memory.

Martinez said he was walking down a street near AS220 and saw a number of young people going inside. He decided to do the same. That was where he met Scott Lapham, the founder of the program, and where he was first given a chance to learn about photography.

Just An Artist | Not An Artist in the News!
The Rule: No Rules By Bill Rodriguez

In The Providence Phoenix, March 9-15

It's been through generosity of spirit, not flagging creativity, that Umberto "Bert" Crenca has become less widely known as an artist than as an arts administrator. The founder and director of AS220, the Providence grassroots cultural treasure, is catching up in a big way. Just an Artist/Not an Artist, a month-long collaborative show with Basque artist Detritus at Firehouse 13, will culminate with a week-long live-in at the gallery.

The Dreyfus in the News!
AS220's new space for artists at the Dreyfus By Bill Rodriguez

The Providence Phoenix Online News February 21, 2007

We sometimes hear that Providence - and Rhode Island - has the highest per-capita accumulation of artists in the country. Unverifiable stats notwithstanding, the town has developed a rep as an attractive location for artists, convenient to both Boston and New York. Trouble is, all this creative camaraderie also makes for a lot of competition for the same limited low-priced studio/living space, driving up prices. Nowadays, even Philadelphia is more affordable than Providence.

Addressing that problem is AS220, the nonprofit artist-run organization that already has work and living spaces for 19 musicians, writers, and visual artists in its downtown Empire Street building. The $7.1 million conversion of the former Dreyfus Hotel, around the block at 121 Washington St., at the corner of Mathewson Street, is well enough underway to schedule walk-throughs of the 1890s building.

The next open house is slated for Sunday, February 25 from 1 to 3 pm. Residents will began carting in their boxes in May of 2008[as220 sic-2007].

Art Trade-A-Thon Yankee Swap
Rhode Island artists Show us what you've got! AS220 will hold the first ever Artist's Trade-a-thon on Saturday November 11, 2006. This arty party is open to all Rhode Island artists - and it's free. Bring a piece of original art to 'swap' and join us in some high spirited fun.

The Artist's Trade-a-thon is the brainchild of Providence furniture artist, Jenna Goldberg. "I wanted to bring people in arts community together in a social way - something that was relaxed, informal and fun. I know there are many artists in RI but I am not familiar with all of their work. The Trade-a-thon idea is based on the "yankee-swap" concept, and it is the focal point of what I think of as a pre-holiday party for RI artists and friends of the arts. For the artists, we are providing a unique opportunity to meet and mingle with other artists, to show off their talents to friends and peers - and, of course, have a lot of fun."

Support Affordable Housing
In Rhode Island, housing prices have skyrocketed in recent years. Too many people struggle to own a house or rent an apartment. In fact, roughly half of Rhode Island's families can't afford to buy the averaged-priced home in ANY Rhode Island community.
Something has to be done. By voting YES on Question 9 this November, you can help Rhode Island create more homes that are priced within reach of young families just starting out, hourly wage workers, senior citizens, and other residents struggling with housing costs. Question 9 will authorize $50 million in bonds that will create both houses and apartments priced within reach of most Rhode Islanders. Learn more about Question 9 here!

The Original AS220 Manifesto!
Here's a little known fact: Indeed, we may appear to have a renovated appearance, which may induce the notion that we are a "new" space, but the truth is that AS220 has been around longer than coffeemilk and Del's lemonade. Well, ok, maybe not that long, but let's just say we're old enough to drink. Legally.

Did you also know that this whole mess started with just a manifesto and $800? You could say a lot has changed since those lawless days, but the ideals of this manifesto (written in 1982 by Umberto Crenca, Steven Emma and Martha Dempster) still ring true. Read on for the complete text:

[The earliest known copy of this manifesto ran in the Providence Eagle on April 14, 1982. It was reprinted or referenced in many other local papers around that time.]
