Fri, 01 Oct 2004 Thanks, IO Labs!
Over the past few years Ted and Stuart at IO Labs have been great supporters of
AS220 and the Broad Street Studio. If you're looking for nice large format printing, fine art reproduction, or even textile printing, go visit them at iolabsinc.com or in person down on Eagle St. in Providence.
Thu, 27 May 2004 Projet Mobilivre
On Thursday May 28th, the Mobilivre Bookmobile Project will be parked outside AS220 on Empire Street for most of the day and evening. Here's what their web site has to say about the project, which last visited AS220 in the Summer of 2003:
"MOBILIVRE-BOOKMOBILE project is an annual touring exhibition of artist books, zines, and independent publications. Traveling by way of a vintage Airstream, the BOOKMOBILE visits a variety of venues in Canada and the US including community centers, schools, libraries, festivals and artist-run centers." Wed, 05 May 2004 Brown Student Radio
Okay, so you may not be able to tune in to Brown Student Radio's broadcast (88.1 on your FM dial, mostly in Providence), depending on your location in physical space. However, by virtue of the Internet, you can listen to anything on BSR via their streaming MP3 archives at
www.bsrlive.com/archives.
You might be interested in No Soap Radio, a half hour experiment in audio collage featuring the voluptuous real-time voices of your hosts, Robin Amer (AS220 resident) and Adeline Goss. Or, you might want to listen to the fine Live Block which features "local and sometimes not-so-local bands playing live at BSR and spinning their favorite records afterwards." TUNE IN! Wed, 24 Sep 2003 Handcranked Films
Handcranked Film Projects is an independent collective of filmmakers and artists from Southern Mass.
Handcranked will be presenting some of their work on Tuesday, September 30th at AS220. The show will feature several works, including the beautiful Met State (a stop-motion tour through an adbandoned asylum) and Daniel Sousa's animated Minotaur. Daniel was recently the recipient of two LEF Foundation media grants, with AS220 acting as fiscal agent.
Handcranked was recently featured on the PBS show Greater Boston Arts. You can watch some Quicktime film samples there. Francis DiMenno's Lemon Basket Each of the 228 issues of Francis DiMenno's The Lemon Basket pushes forward a new kind of hypertext writing, one that I can hear being read by The Wrong Hero, Francis' stage personae. Francis performed often at AS220 (not so much anymore) at the Cabaret of the Oddly Normal. Before that he worked at the The Middle East in Cambridge. Francis also publishes Modern Wisdom, the "world's only humor magazine", and Americana, reviews of books about American History. Mon, 01 Sep 2003 Noney, the People's Currency Noney is a new currency. Each Noney note is a hand drawn, hand printed and hand signed piece of art. Each note can also be traded for things. Like all money, Noney is for people to circulate. The first wave of notes appeared in Providence during May 2003 at AS220, Atlas Bower Books and the West Broadway Neighborhood Association.
Now Noney has reached beyond Providence, with a recent mention on Boing Boing and several Noney Stories coming in from other countries. It was also mentioned in the Utne Reader in October 2003. The Future 500
The Future 500 book is a complete resource on the youth movement in the US. The book features analysis of the movement, interviews with 25 young people changing the world, and profiles of 500 of the most important youth-led organizations across the country (including the Broad Street Studio). The Future 500 website also features a searchable database of youth organizing resources.
The Hive Archive
Congratulations to the Hive Archive on their recent (August 2003) acquisition of a building on the corner of Manton and Aleppo. The Hive is a "non-profit, women-run feminist arts organization. Our community space will provide an archive of art made by women, a feminist library and resource center, affordable community art studios and a gallery/performance space. Through these resources, we hope to create an accessible, safe environment for creative collaboration, learning, and activism."
