1. What is the AS220 stage all about?

The AS220 performance space is not a normal live venue. AS220 is a non-profit community arts center � we maintain affordable residential and work studios, several galleries, a performance space, a community darkroom and The Broad Street Studio youth program.

AS220's mission is to provide an uncensored and unjuried forum for Rhode Island artists. This means that any artist living in the state of Rhode Island will get an opportunity to perform or exhibit at AS220 (see #4 below).

We program all types and genres of original music and performance and primarily focus on local artists. We also host the occasional book tour, film night, fashion show, record fair and jaw-dropping international music festival.

We like variety - it's encouraged even. The AS220 stage hosts ten to twelve events every week, usually with three or four acts performing every night. Our performance space is booked at least two months in advance, so please be patient.

2. How do I go about booking?

First off, read all of the information on this page, then PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORM BELOW TO SUBMIT A BOOKING REQUEST.
We are no longer fielding emails and phone calls � you must use this form. Please fill in the form completely. Please be aware that you may not get a reply (especially if you are not a Rhode Island artist). It is impossible to personally address every booking request.

3. How can I get a show if I�m not from Rhode Island?

Fill in the form below, but please note that, unfortunately, there are not a lot of opportunities for out of state acts. While we do host national and international performers, there are always RI artists on the bill. If you know of local acts that you would want to play with, contacting them would be a good place to start; it's often best to book through a local artist. You could also try other venues in Providence such as Tazza, The Black Rep, The Living Room, Lupo�s, and others. They are in the phone book. Google is also a useful tool. REMEMBER - RHODE ISLAND ARTISTS RECEIVE BOOKING PRIORITY AT AS220.

4. Hey, I am a Rhode Islander.

Then you will have show, but again, please be patient. There are an enormous amount of requests and we try to accommodate as much as we can. There are also quite a lot of REGULARLY PROGRAMMED EVENTS that are open to everyone. We strongly encourage you to sign up for these events or just come down and participate:

* The Empire Revue � (1st Sunday of the month) � Cabaret variety show � Music, comedy, spoken word, performance art, more! info/contact.

* B-Sharp Music presents � (1st Friday of the month) � indie, pop, dance and rock bands organized by B-Sharp. info/contact.

* Free Speech Thursdays � (every Thursday) � Spoken word, poetry open mics, Poetry Slams. info/contact.

* Songwriters In The Round � (2nd Sunday of the month) � singer/songwriter event hosted by RISA (Rhode Island Songwriter Assoc). info/contact.

* Musician Open Mic � (3rd Thursdays, following the poet open mic) � bands, singer/songwriters, fire eaters, free speech what-have-you! info/contact.

In addition to these events, there is an open live-model Figure Drawing session every Tuesday night. There are monthly Geek Dinners, Film Screenings, and on every first-Tuesday there is a monthly Jazz residency with UM. AS220 also hosts evenings for local record labels, radio stations and shops (such as Last Visible Dog, Tor Johnson, Brown Student & Community Radio, Armageddon and others), but these are on a floating (rather than regularly programmed) schedule. All AS220 Performance Space programming is subject to change. Check the calendar for more details, updates and unexpected surprises! Please note that nightly calendar listings are in reverse order (artists that are listed first will perform last).

A note about your inevitable request to play on a Friday or Saturday night: Unfortunately, there are over 100 million artists in the world and every single one of them requests a weekend show. The difficulty is that Fridays and Saturdays only happen twice a week... as you can imagine, the mathematics of this situation are problematic.

Also note that bookings are handled in the order that they are recieved. If you are offered a show and you don't book it or cancel for whatever reason, then you must start the booking process over again.

5. Holy cow, there is a lot of regular stuff going on. Can I have my own regular night at AS220?

No, we are not scheduling any additional regularly-programmed evenings at this time.

6. Can we perform cover songs?

No. AS220 aims to support original music. In addition, as of November 1st, 2004, a boycott of all music licensed by ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC is in effect. This means that ALL material performed at AS220 must be original or must be in the public domain. Please contact the office if you need clarification on this policy. 7. Ok, we have a show scheduled � now what?

8. Where do we go and when?

Sets start 30 minutes after doors. Sets are usually 35-40 minutes each. AS220 has a 1am license...sets must end by 12:45am

9. Is AS220 all-ages?

Yes, we are always all-ages, all the time. Not just 18+, we mean ALL ages.
Obviously, 21+ with ID to drink at the AS220 bar.

10. Is there a production contact?

Individual shows are run by one of several rotating HOUSE MANAGERS. House Managers provide artist hospitality, pay performers and run each evening's show. After 6pm, ask for the evening's HOUSE MANAGER at the AS220 bar: 401-861-9190

12. Technical.

We have no backline. The AS220 stage is 2ft. high, 28 ft. wide and 11 ft. deep. There are 4x8 ft. folding stage extensions available. The sound system has four powered mains, a pair of subs and two monitor wedges in parallel. A digital projector is permanently installed on the ceiling directed at a pull-down screen on stage. There is a VHS/DVD player in the sound booth as well as a dimmer board for the stage lighting grid. The sound board is a 16 channel Mackie, our rack gear includes compression, EQ and effects. Our staff members have been specially trained to operate our equipment, and will give you the best sound possible, within the capabilities of our equipment. If you have your own sound person, we ask that they use a hands-off approach to explaining the sound needs of your band.

What's new in the AS220 Darkroom

I want to let people know about the terrific work that Peter Gemei has done over the past several months and that we are signing up students for our Intro to Photo, Intermediate Printing and Pinhole Workshop classes in April.

Peter Gemei learned photography from our Intro to Photo class in 2003 and has gradually been personalizing his approach to photography ever since. In the fall of 2007 Peter asked me to give him a tutorial in developing 4x5 black and white sheet film. I was anxious to see what he was shooting and was completely surprised to see what he produced.

Workshops, Classes and Events

SHOP ORIENTATION / MEMBERSHIP - FREE!
First Monday of each month - 6pm
There will be an orientation for each of the three types of printing. To include basic introduction to the specifics of the AS220 shop, for example, our lighting and exposure system, rag and clean up procedures, sign up for shop time, ect. This is not an introduction to technique and printmakers need to have taken a class or shown proficiency through a portfolio of work to be viewed only on the merits of technical skill. Come see our facilities and what we have to offer. You cannot use the shop until you have attended the orientation in the method you chose to print in.

PAYMENT AND COST
You can visit the AS220 Online Shop to browse classes, reserve a spot in a class online, and make payment for that class using PayPal or credit card. Classes cost $25 per 4-hour block (a 3-block class would cost $75) and a $10 general shop materials fee is required for every class (some classes also require outside supplies - these are not included in cost of class or general shop material fee, nor are they provided.). To cancel you must email morgan@as220.org one week in advance, or risk losing your payment.

CANCELLATION OF CLASSES
If minimum number is not met in class enrollment, the teacher may opt to cancel class. If this is the case, we will give a full refund class payment and first choice to enroll in future classes. We will attempt to give as much notice as possible.

Any and all interested in learning a bit about the shop and how it works, come to the FREE shop open house. We'll walk you through our silkscreen, letterpress and intaglio facilities! If you miss it this month, don't worry! There's an open house the first Monday of every month, at 6pm. Bring your work to show you can already print and get signed off to use the shop, or come and find out what sort of neat stuff the shop has to offer!!! No need to sign up, just show up!!

INTRO TO SILKSCREEN A - THURSDAY APRIL 3rd, 5-9pm - $35
This course provides a very quick and basic introduction to silkscreen. Participants will learn the basics of the photo-emulsion process, in addition to ink mixing, how to troubleshoot the process, registration and printing methods. Students will be provided with a small supply list when they sign up for the course. Students need not take ALL 3 silkscreen courses to be signed off to use the shop, one course (A, B, or C). Sign up now!

INTRO TO INTAGLIO - FRIDAY APRIL 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th, 5-9pm - $110
In the Introduction to Intaglio class basic mark making skills as well as the techniques and processes of an etching press will be taught. Participants will create non-toxic etching projects on copper plates to help develop a clear understanding of traditional intaglio methods. Stage biting and resistance techniques will be discussed to provide an insight to good working habits. We will also cover ink mixing and application, plate preparation and wiping, as well as paper tearing and registration. Student's particular interests will determine the direction of the demonstrations, and there should be time for each participant to complete at least two individual projects. This clas will run over four meetings, participants must attend all four meetings to be signed off to print in the shop. Sign up now!

LETTERPRESS - SATURDAY APRIL 12th, 19th, 26th, 1-5pm - $85
This course provides a quick, basic introduction to letterpress. Participants learn to ink the press, adjust pressure, adjust roller height, register and feed a sheet of paper, make an impression and then clean the press. Creating and using plastic plates in combination with metal movable type to create your own vision in letterpressed embossment. Participants must take ALL THREE letterpress classes in order to be certified to use the letterpress during print time. The total cost of taking all 3 classes is $85. Class is Full.

T-SHIRT SILKSCREEN A - SUNDAY APRIL 13th, 1-5pm - $35
Student will learn the very basics of screen-printing 1-color images on t-shirts, using the photo-emulsion process. They will also discover the best methods for keeping t-shirts flat, using the proper ink for fabric, as well as how to properly set the ink into the shirt using the hot press or other at household methods. By the end of the class, students will have produced a wearable, 1-color t shirt. Students may take either class A or B, they are not required to take both. Sign up now!

SOLAR PRINTING WITH SUZANNE LEWIS - SATURDAY APRIL 19th, 10am-1pm - $35
The workshop will introduce participants to the process of solar relief printmaking. In this process a transparency is placed over a special photo emulsion plate. The sun then etches the plate for you. The result is a relief plate which when printed resembles a woodblock print yet without the laborious task of carving in wood or linoleum. Participants are asked to bring a drawing or photograph which can be translated into a bold black and white graphic image. Sign up now!

AS220 offers residential and work space to artists who seek a diverse, stable and affordable studio environment. The Studio Program encourages a community of ideas rather than simply a community of tenants. Our goal is to create a cooperative living environment driven by the artistic energy of its inhabitants.

"AS220, a nonprofit artist group, currently owns and operates two buildings. Umberto Crenca founded the group at 220 Weybosset Street in 1985; the name, short for Artist Space 220, is supposed to evoke P. S. 1, the contemporary art center in Queens.

He began in a single room, but in 1993, Lucie Searle, a developer, assisted the organization in buying a 22,000-square-foot- building for $400,000. A second building was bought in 2005 using tax credits. AS220 is about to buy its third building for more than $1 million."

This course will cover a number of different types of water based monoprinting techniques, such as trace monotype, additive/reductive monotype, watercolor transfer, Xerox transfer and multi-plate registration. This combination of mediums will intrigue both the printmaker who's looking to loosen up, and the painter who's looking to broaden their horizons.

This is where College Visions, an upstart nonprofit organization, helps high school students make college a reality.

College Visions is itself the vision of one man, Simon Moore, a Brown University graduate and Classical High School alumnus who believes that urban teenagers deserve the same help getting into college as their affluent peers.

Artists-in-Residence

AS220 has an Artist-In-Residence program that has been utilized by artists from all over the world. We have monthly residencies where an artist is expected to propose a project and complete it over the period of their residency. At the end of their time spent here at AS220, their project is performed or exhibited. Below are some examples of artists who have lived and worked here at AS220. Any and all interested in learning a bit about the shop and how it works, come to the FREE shop open house. We'll walk you through our silkscreen, letterpress and intaglio facilities! If you miss it this month, don't worry! There's an open house the first Monday of every month, at 6pm. Bring your work to show you can already print and get signed off to use the shop, or come and find out what sort of neat stuff the shop has to offer!!!

LETTERPRESS I - THURSDAY JAN.10th, 5pm-9pm - $25

This course provides a quick, basic introduction to letterpress. Participants learn to ink the press, adjust pressure, adjust roller height, register and feed a sheet of paper, make an impression and then clean the press. Creating and using plastic plates in combination with metal movable type to create your own vision in letterpressed embossment. Participants must take ALL THREE letterpress classes in order to be certified to use the letterpress during print time. The total cost of taking all 3 classes is $75.

INTRO TO SILKSCREEN A - TUESDAY JAN.15th, 5pm-9pm - $25
This course provides a very quick and basic introduction to silkscreen. Participants will learn the basics of the photo-emulsion process, in addition to ink mixing, how to troubleshoot the process, registration and printing methods. Students will be provided with a small supply list when they sign up for the course. Students need not take BOTH silkscreen A and silkscreen B, one course is sufficient.

T - SHIRT SILKSCREEN - SATURDAY JAN.19th, 1pm-5pm - $25
Student will learn the very basics of screen-printing 1-color images on t-shirts, using the photo-emulsion process. They will also discover the best methods for keeping t-shirts flat, using the proper ink for fabric, as well as how to properly set the ink into the shirt using the hot press or other at household methods. By the end of the class, students will have produced a wearable, 1-color t shirt.

POST HOLIDAY CRAFT PARTY PARTY REDUX - SATURDAY JAN.26th, 5pm-9pm $5 donation
Join us for a crafty post holiday workshop!!! Learn simple silkscreen and linoleum techniques if you want and make some holiday presents and cards using pom-poms and glitter and pipe cleaners. BYOB and BYOS (bring your own supplies!). We will provide AWESOME food and drink and MAYBE STEAM SOME CIDER AND GET SOME COFFEE FROM DUNKIES!!! ALSO we have an IPOD!!! ALL AGES!!! and it ENDS AT NINE so you can enjoy your regular scheduled Saturday night!

Broad Street Studio needs YOU!

It is AS220's Broad Street Studio's mission, in cooperation with Project Hope and the Rhode Island Training School, to provide young people, both at the RITS and upon their release from the RITS, with positive role models to enhance their personal, educational, occupational and communal development.

And right now we are in need of mentors. These individuals should be able to meet with their mentees for at least 2hours/day, 1day/week, for 6 months. If you are a good listener, a positive role model, can relate to youth, and would like to become a mentor please contact me. Not only will you be rewarded with warm fuzzies, but you will also receive $12.00/hr.

*This is also a great opportunity for those who need to fulfill a community service requirement.

This course provides a quick, basic introduction to letterpress. Participants learn to ink the press, adjust pressure, adjust roller height, register and feed a sheet of paper, make an impression and then clean the press. Creating and using plastic plates in combination with metal movable type to create your own vision in letterpressed embossment. INTRO TO WOOD BLOCK/RELIEF PRINTING
WEDNESDAY DEC.5th, 5pm-9pm - $25
Students will learn basic carving techniques with gouges and other tools. Within the class, students will have the opportunity to work on single color linoleum or wood block. Printing using hand techniques in addition to using the etching press and experimenting with papers will all be covered by the instructor.

GIFT WRAP: REPEATING PATTERNS I

Students will learn to design repeating patterns for fabric, wrapping paper, wall paper, etc using silkscreen techniques over the course of three classes. This course provides the a very basic introduction to the photo-emulsion process of silkscreen. Participants will learn how to transfer an image of their appropriation or making onto a screen by exposing photo-emulsion. They will also learn how to degrease, coat, ink, print with and clean the screen.
Students need only take ONE class to be signed off to silkscreen in the shop, NOT both.

INTRODUCTION TO OIL BASED WOODBLOCK AND LINOLEUM - 4 hours - $25
SUNDAY NOV.11th, 1pm-5pm
maximum 5 students per class
Students will learn basic carving techniques with gouges, as well as introduction to the use of a dremel as a relief-carving tool. Within the class, students will have the opportunity to work on single color linoleum or wood block. Printing using hand techniques in addition to using the etching press and experimenting with papers will all be covered.

INTRODUCTION TO LETTERPRESS - 12 hours - $75

T-SHIRT SILKSCREEN - 4 hours - $25
SATURDAY NOV.10th 1pm-5pm
maximum 5 students
Student will learn to turn an image of their making or appropriation into a design that can be silkscreened onto a t-shirt or other item of clothing, using the photo emulsion process. They will also learn how to properly set the ink into the shirt using the hot press or other household methods. By the end of class students should have a one-color silkscreened image.

Print Shop Membership

How can I print in the Print Shop?
You must first pay the $40 annual membership fee, which helps us to maintain the equipment and pay our rent.
If you have previous experience in the medium in which you desire to print in the printshop, bring in your portfolio to a Monday night orientation or make an appointment to show us you are proficient (work to be viewed on the merits of technical ability only), and you will be signed off to use the shop.
If you have no previous experience printing, you are welcome to sign up for a class to learn the basics. After the class you will be signed off to print in that medium.

Once you have paid you annual membership and have been signed off to print there are a few more choices to make:

Membership Options

These following fees help us stock the shop with newsprint, cleaning supplies, rags, emulsion, oil-based inks for letterpress and intaglio, transparent base for silkscreen, and other shared consumable materials.

KEY HOLDER - $100 a month
24 hour shop access. Responsible for: monitoring open shop hours and teaching monthly orientations, must monitor 12 hours or four blocks a month, attend weekly meetings, and share responsibility for planning events. Hours spent teaching and/or monitoring will count against the monthly membership cost. Key holders have the first option for teaching monthly classes for compensation. Key holders must be knowledgeable of all shop practices and have a working knowledge of all printmaking techniques offered.

MEMBER - $100 a month
Unlimited access during open shop hours, between Noon and Midnight, except when classes are being held. Must still sign up in advance for four-hour blocks of time, to avoid crowding the shop. Members must attend an orientation session before printing, and prove competence in the medium they wish to use by either attending a weekend/weeknight workshop, or by presenting a portfolio of prints made in the technique they intend to use in the shop.

MEMBER/MONITOR - $20-100 month
Unlimited access during open shop hours, between Noon and Midnight, except when classes are being held. Must still sign up in advance for four-hour blocks of time, to avoid crowding the shop. Must be signed off to print in medium of choice. This membership allows you to volunteer your time as a monitor in exchange for a reduction in your membership fees. Each hour you monitor will be in trade for $10 deduction. You must be familiar with all of the equipment and shop practice. Training with a keyholder member is required and counts towards a rate reduction.

PRINT TIME - $25 per 4 hours
May sign up in advance for a block of time : 1pm-5pm, 5pm-9pm, 9pm-1pm, Must attend Shop Orientation, and be signed off by a keyholder in desired print medium (through workshop or portfolio).

AS220 RESIDENTS/STUDIOS/EMPLOYEES - $40 annual fee
Unlimited access during open shop hours (1pm-1am), except when classes are being held. Must sign up in advance. Must be signed off to print in medium of choice. Must donate some prints.

PETITION FOR RATE REDUCTION
If you need access to a printshop but are unable to pay, please contact us so that we can find a solution, be it volunteering time, exchange for prints or other means, this shop is available to everyone.

Intro to Photography Workshop Announced!

The basics of 35mm photography will be covered in this first level traditional photography course with instructor Gail Porter. Beginning with a comprehensive examination and understanding of the camera and light meter, students will learn to develop film, make contact prints , and to enlarge prints using variable contrast filters to improve print quality.

Slide presentations of both historic and contemporary photographers will accompany each asssignment as students learn to control depths of field and interpret motion in still photography. Frequent critiques and class discussions will help students to improve their ability to talk about photographs, to define their interests in photography, and to improve composition.

The six-week class is held on Mondays from 7-10pm from October 8th to November 12th. The cost for the workshop is $250 not including supplies. Interested people can contact Scott Lapham at 401-274-1299 or scott@as220.org.

Intermediate Traditional B&W Printing Class

Instructor: Stewart Martin

If you have working experience printing black & white and want to hone you skills further, this course is for you. We will cover in depth the following; setting up a darkroom, mixing and tweaking chemistry, contrast control, dodging, burning, flashing, washing, toning, spotting, print finishing, breaking down a darkroom and exhibiting your work.

Black and white printing is an interesting mix of the scientific and creative. It's also a lot of fun and very satisfying. If you're interested in consistent results, it's necessary for you to ground your printing skills in the scientific first. This is the best way to obtain repeatable results. Then the creative comes.

Our small class size affords us much one-to-one time so we can go into great detail to help you get what you want from your prints. Chemistry is provided. Please bring paper. Also, please bring two photographs you printed and the corresponding negatives to our first class.

BIO for Stewart Martin

Stewart Martin is a professional printer and photographer who has worked in the field of traditional photography for twenty five years. His early printing experience involved edition printing for Larry Clark, Bruce Davidson, Louis Faurer and Larry Fink. His archival B&W darkroom is equipped to print up to 20x24 inches. Although events and portraits are the bulk of his commercial work, he also does a specialized type of photography of the eye for ophthalmologists. He lives and works in Providence with his wife and daughter.

August Artists In Residence!

Meet August's AIRS Julia Thompson and Alyssa Berg as they unveil the fruits of their month-long residency at AS220 THIS Saturday, September 1st at the Dirt Palace from 7-10pm.

The celebration will commemorate the opening of Ms. Berg's window installation at the Palace, which will be on display until September 30, 2007 in the window gallery of the Dirt Palace, 14 Olneyville Square in Providence.

Saturday's opening will also debut the limited edition "book" that has been a collaborative effort between writer Julia Thompson and illustrators Alyssa Berg and Arley-Rose Torsone that was also conceived during the month of August.

Alyssa, an artist and musician originally from Seattle but most recently living in Brooklyn; and Julia, a writer and artist from Connecticut, living in Brooklyn, but now off to live in Santiago, Chile as soon as she's done here in Providence, have begun a flickr page documenting their time here in Providence. Check it out!

Pinhole Photography Workshop

Join Pinhole Photography instructor David Ellis in a two-day workshop as you learn to construct pinhole cameras made from ordinary containers, take photographs using photographic paper to create paper negatives and use the darkroom to make prints.
