Stereographs by Art Toegemann
Cross Your Eyes
A show of freeviewed stereographs, pictures in genuine 3D. Photographs mounted so that, when the audience crosses its eyes to register the right and left images, they drift together and produce a three dimensional image in the center.
Freeviewing is a standard method of viewing in the genre. The other method is parallel, not used here.
The photographic method used has been a twin camera, two identical cameras, synchronized by a cable. Someone somewhere is writiing the computer code that will produce a stereographic mate for a single image by just pushing alt/ctl/3d.

Sysyphus' Boxes: Installation by Anna Shapiro and documentation by DAVYDE-X
Anna will be performing a live version of Sisyphus' Boxes during the opening reception on August 6. The performance signifies the struggle of artists' displacement in a different way from the usual anger-filled dialogue that continues to go nowhere.
Says Ashley Mercado of The Agenda:
"(Anna Shapiro's) performance gives an access point that is much more inclusive and conversational than the "usual artist gripe" - this term 'artist' had been a tag for advertising Providence, and a catch-phrase point
of contention for a lot of people. There are misgivings and
misunderstandings that abound. What is most fascinating about the
work is that it is exploratory and not didactic. It does not scream
at you in anger - it tells a story and alleviates the tension caused
by differing ideologies attempting to meet in the center--that never
actually do. (Anna's) work is site-specific to Providence. It was
inspired here, it is performed here, it is being shown here."
The performance begins 3pm at her Ajay Land studio on Harris Ave. and arrives at AS220 at 4pm.

In the 2nd Floor Hallway Gallery: AS220 Artist-In-Residence Scott Seaboldt presents: An Investigation into the Original Address of AS220
220 Weybosett Street, Providence RI Scott Seaboldt is one of the founding members of AS220, whose work has been immortalized on the wall of our stairway. He will be returning to AS220 for a month-long stint as our Artist-In-Residence.
"In my residency this summer in Rhode Island I will investigate the space that was the original location of AS220; 220 Weybosett Street, Providence, R.I. Utilizing my memories of the space in conjunction with what is the space at present, I will create a body of at least four works using the residency live/work space for the creation the work. I will exhibit the result of the daily work in the allotted display space in the AS220 2nd Floor Hallway Gallery.
My involvement at AS220 in years past years are a series of rich and yet formless recollections. By entering the Weybosett Street building, and into the spaces that were the genesis for these memories. I will bridge time. Whatever the space may be used for today, I will be able to place myself in the corporeal space of my own memories, and then will construct imagery from the transportation of past chimera into present realities.
Each of the four pieces will be produced in a distinctly different medium. The mediums may include, but are not limited to, the written word, photograph, sculpture, and graphic media."

Pocket Change: A radical approach to art selling!
Featuring prints by: Neil Burke, Brian Chippendale, Cybele Collins, Jo Dery, Shawn Gilheenney, KC Henneman, Kim Kazaan, Xander Marro, Jenny Nichols, Ken Speiser, Meredith Stern, Mike Taylor, Alec Thibodeau, Katie Truskoski and Pippi Zornoza
An experimental exhibition by 15 local printmakers making art affordable for all!
Pocket Change is an experimental exhibition that challenges the "business as usual" approach of the contemporary art world's fixed pricing for the elite and affluent art connoisseur. Pocket Change features the work of sixteen RI printmakers offering three different prints each at different price ranges. Each print is priced at a sliding scale, allowing each buyer to determine the exact price they can pay. The first is a printed edition of 100 priced between $1 and $15. The second is a print edition of 25 priced at $20-$150. The third is an edition of 5 priced at $100-$300. As each artist creates affordable art for people of varying financial means creating the opportunity for every person to own an original work of art. This is unusual for galleries, which usually have fixed prices for work that is priced for an elite crowd of people who can afford to collect art. Fifteen artists will participate in the Pocket Change experiment in an effort to explore ways of making art affordable and accessible to everyone.
Be sure to join us on Wednesday, June 7 from 7-9pm for the Pocket Change Panel Discussion where artists, curators and historians discuss alternative models of selling and displaying artwork. Panelists include: Nicolas Lampert, Josh MacPhee, Dylan Miner and Alec Thibodeau

In the Upstairs Gallery:
Installation by Russ Wolfgang Smith
Russ Smith creates unique, award-winning, mixed media three-dimensional works and installations. Inspired by the Greek and Italian artists who were part of the Arte Povera movement of the 1960's and 70's, Russ often uses found objects and items from everyday life in his art. Working with materials as diverse as rust, sand, confetti, barbed wire, wood, metal, and a variety of paints, Russ makes visceral art that is at times overtly political and in direct response to the present social climate in the United States and abroad, at other times deeply personal and enigmatic. His art in many instances drives itself during the creation process. The finished piece often surprises him. |
In the 2nd Floor Hallway Gallery
New paintings and Drawings by Cybele Collins Cybelle creates delicate drawings and paintings infused with a glowing vibrancy undercut by the encroaching gloom of a twilight just out of sight. |
