Paul Krot was the founder of Sprint Systems of Photography and a legendary teacher at the Rhode Island School of Design. His friends and colleagues included Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. From an early age, Paul began experimenting with photo chemical formulas and mixtures, and he developed his own system to suit his needs. His initial experiments later developed into a system of processing that was easy to teach. Paul had an innate sense of chemistry and a natural ability to work with students. The chemistry Paul created contiues to provide students, teachers and professionals with a complete system for film and print. Paul believed in organizations like AS220 that provide support services and mentors for youth to learn the art of photography. In Paul's memory, Sprint Systems of Photography proudly supports the AS220 darkroom. "Paul Krot inspired many students, including me, with his energetic and sometimes unorthodox teaching methods. For instance, once in a color photo chemistry class, he had the students watch the Wizard of Oz, analyzing how color impacted the story telling in the movie. Paul also started Sprint Systems of Photography which manufactures photo processing chemistry used world wide. In 1995 when the AS220 Community Darkroom was just starting I visited Sprint to see if they could donate any chemistry to our fledgling program. Paul had passed away, but I was told that he had spoken fondly of the unjuried open spirit of AS220. Since that time Sprint has been the most generous partner a program like the AS220 Darkroom could ever dream of. In the spirit of Paul Krot we named the darkroom The Paul Krot Community Darkroom. We hope he would approve."
