Artists-in-Residence
AS220 has an Artist-In-Residence program that has been utilized by artists from all over the world. We have monthly residencies where an artist is expected to propose a project and complete it over the period of their residency. At the end of their time spent here at AS220, their project is performed or exhibited. Below are some examples of artists who have lived and worked here at AS220. For information about becoming an AIR, please contact Chloe Mandel at chloe@as220.org.

Performance Space Booking Info + FAQ

This is not the place to book a gallery exhibit at AS220 - you want to CLICK HERE.

1. What is the AS220 stage all about?

The AS220 performance space is not a normal live venue. AS220 is a non-profit community arts center – we maintain affordable residential and work studios, several galleries, a performance space, a community darkroom and The Broad Street Studio youth program.

AS220's mission is to provide an uncensored and unjuried forum for Rhode Island artists. This means that any artist living in the state of Rhode Island will get an opportunity to perform or exhibit at AS220 (see #4 below).

We program all types and genres of original music and performance and primarily focus on local artists. We also host the occasional book tour, film night, fashion show, record fair and jaw-dropping international music festival.

We like variety - it's encouraged even. The AS220 stage hosts ten to twelve events every week, usually with three or four acts performing every night. Our performance space is booked at least two months in advance, so please be patient.

2. How do I go about booking?

First off, read all of the information on this page, then PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORM BELOW TO SUBMIT A BOOKING REQUEST.
We are no longer fielding emails and phone calls – you must use this form. Please fill in the form completely. Please be aware that you may not get a reply (especially if you are not a Rhode Island artist). It is impossible to personally address every booking request.

3. How can I get a show if I’m not from Rhode Island?

Fill in the form below, but please note that, unfortunately, there are not a lot of opportunities for out of state acts. While we do host national and international performers, there are always RI artists on the bill. If you know of local acts that you would want to play with, contacting them would be a good place to start; it's often best to book through a local artist. You could also try other venues in Providence such as Tazza, The Black Rep, The Living Room, Lupo’s, and others. They are in the phone book. Google is also a useful tool. REMEMBER - RHODE ISLAND ARTISTS RECEIVE BOOKING PRIORITY AT AS220.

4. Hey, I am a Rhode Islander.

Then you will have show, but again, please be patient. There are an enormous amount of requests and we try to accommodate as much as we can. There are also quite a lot of REGULARLY PROGRAMMED EVENTS that are open to everyone. We strongly encourage you to sign up for these events or just come down and participate:

* The Empire Revue – (1st Sunday of the month) – Cabaret variety show – Music, comedy, spoken word, performance art, more! info/contact.

* B-Sharp Music presents – (1st Friday of the month) – indie, pop, dance and rock bands organized by B-Sharp. info/contact.

* Free Speech Thursdays – (every Thursday) – Spoken word, poetry open mics, Poetry Slams. info/contact.

* Songwriters In The Round – (2nd Sunday of the month) – singer/songwriter event hosted by RISA (Rhode Island Songwriter Assoc). info/contact.

* Musician Open Mic – (3rd Thursdays, following the poet open mic) – bands, singer/songwriters, fire eaters, free speech what-have-you! info/contact.

In addition to these events, there is an open live-model Figure Drawing session every Tuesday night. There are monthly Geek Dinners, Film Screenings, and on every first-Tuesday there is a monthly Jazz residency with UM. AS220 also hosts evenings for local record labels, radio stations and shops (such as Last Visible Dog, Tor Johnson, Brown Student & Community Radio, Armageddon and others), but these are on a floating (rather than regularly programmed) schedule. All AS220 Performance Space programming is subject to change. Check the calendar for more details, updates and unexpected surprises! Please note that nightly calendar listings are in reverse order (artists that are listed first will perform last).

A note about your inevitable request to play on a Friday or Saturday night: Unfortunately, there are over 100 million artists in the world and every single one of them requests a weekend show. The difficulty is that Fridays and Saturdays only happen twice a week... as you can imagine, the mathematics of this situation are problematic.

Also note that bookings are handled in the order that they are recieved. If you are offered a show and you don't book it or cancel for whatever reason, then you must start the booking process over again.

5. Holy cow, there is a lot of regular stuff going on. Can I have my own regular night at AS220?

No, we are not scheduling any additional regularly-programmed evenings at this time.

6. Can we perform cover songs?

No. AS220 aims to support original music. In addition, as of November 1st, 2004, a boycott of all music licensed by ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC is in effect. This means that ALL material performed at AS220 must be original or must be in the public domain. Please contact the office if you need clarification on this policy. Or, for more information about this boycott you may download this PDF information sheet/FAQ..

7. Ok, we have a show scheduled – now what?

Great! Please read this performer information sheet.
This file contains info on hospitality, guest lists, payment policy, etc.

"West coast food for east coast dudes"

¡Hola!

AS220 proudly introduces the beginning of a new culinary era in our downstairs cafe: Announcing the Taqueria Pacifica at AS220!

Hours
Tuesday-Saturday: Noon-10pm
Brunch: Saturday: Noon-3pm

Beginning early December, the Taqueria Pacifica will magically transform itself into a permanent fixture as the new AS220 cafe. Offering West Coast-stylin' Mexican food, the Taqueria Pacifica at AS220 will serve the freshest and most flavorful grub for much less than a fortune. It will be a place where you could meet friends before a show or stop in a for quick and healthy lunch, or even grab some take-out on your way home from work. A snooty Bistro? No way! We want everyone to feel welcome, whether you’re a tattooed bike messenger or an East-Side dentist. Anyone who craves great food made with love is welcome at Taqueria Pacifica.

You may know the Taqueria Pacifica as the beloved Taco Truk, the Providence staple of fresh-n-good on-the-go grub thats served straight from the guacamole-green truck. Since it’s inception in June of 2004, Pacifica has managed to attract clientele from across the boards with basically no paid advertising. "For some reason or another," says Tyler Long, burrito passionist and TP founder, "we like to think it’s the food - it is common for us to sell-out within the hours of 6 and 9:30 pm. When a good thing happens in Providence people know about it. Taqueria Pacifica has no where to go but big." As a testament to its popularity, in just one year the small business had been glorified by articles in The Providence Monthly, The Rhode Island Monthly, The Providence Phoenix, the East Side Monthly, and The Providence Journal.

Having a reputation for quality, the Taqueria Pacifica works with local farmers to offer the best organic and local produce available. The TP folks patronize the Southside Community Land Trust and Red Planet Organic, and also maintain their own organic city farm, Pacifica Organics, located at the end of Dexter Street right here in Providence, Rhode Island.

The menu will feature a range of carnivorous to vegetarian to vegan specialties, also offering fresh and local fish and shrimp to the mix. You got your fresh veggie-stuffed burritos, your fish tacos, your quesadillas and joesadillas, your cumin-lime sour cream, possibly the best homemade salsa tomato in North America, and other mmm mm mmm! west coast-style mexican favorites that will surely turn you into a Taqueria Addict. Its had that affect on us here at AS220 and we're just jumpin like jumpin beans in the hot Mexican sun in anticipation for the Taqueria Pacifica to finally park it at the ol' AS220!

For more info, call the Taqueria Pacifica Hotline at 401-781-TRUK!

Muzine and Hidden TREWTH

In 1998, AS220 was embarked on another educational initiative involving RITS, the Muse Union. Enlisting the service of Americorps* VISTA members, AS220 staff sought to engage three Providence schools, including the Rhode Island Training School, an autonomous Rhode Island public school system. Muse Union’s mission was to empower students by assisting them in the creation of their own in-school arts opportunities. They began by offering writing workshops, and had the most success working with RITS. AS220 staff, Met School students, and VISTA members began collecting poetry and prose from RITS youth, and in August 1999, the first Muse Union literary publication, Muzine, was produced.

BSS Product Development Team

The Product Development Team is a program at AS220's Broad Street Studio that teaches youth how to turn their art into marketable merchandise. This is done by creating designs and logos for events and other organizations, which are then used in posters, T-shirts, and other visual material. The main goal of the Product Development Team however, is to leverage the creative branded clothing apparel and other products. This branded image will represent the values of social responsibility and environmental consciousness that are upheld by the organization. We have one full-time graphic design instructor/coordinator and another volunteer designer teaching the students to expand their conceptual thinking and to refine their art skills. Another volunteer instructor gives lectures about social responsibility and the issues behind global capitalism (sweatshops, media representation of teens, etc.). Through this program we hope to foster youth entrepreneurship and self-esteem based on artistic accomplishments.

AS220 and the RI Training School

In 1998, the staff at AS220 helped to organize an evening at the Rhode Island Training School (RITS), the state’s juvenile detention facility, to showcase the writing, visual and dramatic work of incarcerated youth, called Impact. One purpose of the Impact evening was to highlight student work from Demian Yattaw’s poetry class at RITS. Yattaw’s dream was to publish a volume of student poetry, and AS220 signed on to help identify resources to produce it. Through AS220’s sponsorship of Impact, over $10,000.000 was raised; a book of student generated poetry and prose was published containing hundreds of entries. Soon after, a second volume was produced with AS220 as the fiscal agent for the project.
