Artists-in-Residence
AS220 has an Artist-In-Residence program that has been utilized by artists from all over the world. We have monthly residencies where an artist is expected to propose a project and complete it over the period of their residency. At the end of their time spent here at AS220, their project is performed or exhibited. Below are some examples of artists who have lived and worked here at AS220. For information about becoming an AIR, please contact Chloe Mandel at chloe@as220.org.
Tue, 29 Apr 2008 Performance Space Booking Info + FAQ This is not the place to book a gallery exhibit at AS220 - you want to CLICK HERE.
The AS220 performance space is not a normal live venue. AS220 is a non-profit community arts center – we maintain affordable residential and work studios, several galleries, a performance space, a community darkroom and The Broad Street Studio youth program.
2. How do I go about booking?
First off, read all of the information on this page, then PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORM BELOW TO SUBMIT A BOOKING REQUEST. 3. How can I get a show if I’m not from Rhode Island?
Fill in the form below, but please note that, unfortunately, there are not a lot of
opportunities for out of state acts. While we do host national and international
performers, there are always RI artists on the bill. If you know of local acts that
you would want to play with, contacting them would be a good place to start; it's
often best to book through a local artist. You could also try other venues in
Providence such as Tazza, The Black Rep, The Living Room, Lupo’s,
and others. They are in the phone book. Google is also a useful tool. REMEMBER - RHODE ISLAND ARTISTS RECEIVE BOOKING PRIORITY AT AS220.
4. Hey, I am a Rhode Islander.
Then you will have show, but again, please be patient. There are an enormous amount
of requests and we try to accommodate as much as we can. There are also quite a lot
of REGULARLY PROGRAMMED EVENTS that are open to everyone. We strongly encourage you
to sign up for these events or just come down and participate: 5. Holy cow, there is a lot of regular stuff going on. Can I have my own regular night at AS220?
No, we are not scheduling any additional regularly-programmed evenings at this time.
6. Can we perform cover songs?
No. AS220 aims to support original music. In addition, as of November 1st, 2004, a
boycott of all music licensed by ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC is in effect. This means that
ALL material performed at AS220 must be original or must be in the public domain.
Please contact the office if you need clarification on this policy. Or, for more information about this boycott you may download this PDF information sheet/FAQ.. 7. Ok, we have a show scheduled – now what?
Great! Please read this performer information sheet. 8. Where do we go and when?
AS220 is located at 115 Empire St, Providence, RI 02903 9. Is AS220 all-ages?
Yes, we are always all-ages, all the time. Not just 18+, we mean ALL ages. 10. Is there a production contact?
Individual shows are run by one of several rotating HOUSE MANAGERS. House Managers
provide artist hospitality, pay performers and run each evening's show. After 6pm, ask for the evening's HOUSE MANAGER at the AS220 bar: 401-861-9190 11. Promotion.
Please send posters to: 12. Technical.
We have no backline. The AS220 stage is 2ft. high, 28 ft. wide and 11 ft. deep.
There are 4x8 ft. folding stage extensions available. The sound system has four
powered mains, a pair of subs and two monitor wedges in parallel. A digital
projector is permanently installed on the ceiling directed at a pull-down screen on
stage. There is a VHS/DVD player in the sound booth as well as a dimmer board for
the stage lighting grid. The sound board is a 16 channel Mackie, our rack gear
includes compression, EQ and effects. Our staff members have been specially trained to operate our equipment, and will give you the best sound possible, within the capabilities of our equipment. If you have your own sound person, we ask that they use a hands-off approach to explaining the sound needs of your band.

Muzine and Hidden TREWTH In 1998, AS220 was embarked on another educational initiative involving RITS, the Muse Union. Enlisting the service of Americorps* VISTA members, AS220 staff sought to engage three Providence schools, including the Rhode Island Training School, an autonomous Rhode Island public school system. Muse Union’s mission was to empower students by assisting them in the creation of their own in-school arts opportunities. They began by offering writing workshops, and had the most success working with RITS. AS220 staff, Met School students, and VISTA members began collecting poetry and prose from RITS youth, and in August 1999, the first Muse Union literary publication, Muzine, was produced. Wed, 07 Apr 2004 BSS Product Development Team ![]() The Product Development Team is a program at AS220's Broad Street Studio that teaches youth how to turn their art into marketable merchandise. This is done by creating designs and logos for events and other organizations, which are then used in posters, T-shirts, and other visual material. The main goal of the Product Development Team however, is to leverage the creative branded clothing apparel and other products. This branded image will represent the values of social responsibility and environmental consciousness that are upheld by the organization. We have one full-time graphic design instructor/coordinator and another volunteer designer teaching the students to expand their conceptual thinking and to refine their art skills. Another volunteer instructor gives lectures about social responsibility and the issues behind global capitalism (sweatshops, media representation of teens, etc.). Through this program we hope to foster youth entrepreneurship and self-esteem based on artistic accomplishments. Mon, 01 Sep 2003 AS220 and the RI Training School In 1998, the staff at AS220 helped to organize an evening at the Rhode Island Training School (RITS), the state’s juvenile detention facility, to showcase the writing, visual and dramatic work of incarcerated youth, called Impact. One purpose of the Impact evening was to highlight student work from Demian Yattaw’s poetry class at RITS. Yattaw’s dream was to publish a volume of student poetry, and AS220 signed on to help identify resources to produce it. Through AS220’s sponsorship of Impact, over $10,000.000 was raised; a book of student generated poetry and prose was published containing hundreds of entries. Soon after, a second volume was produced with AS220 as the fiscal agent for the project. Tue, 30 Sep 2003 The Statewide Arts Mission The Statewide Arts Mission (S.A.M.) is a collaboration between the Corporation for National Service and AS220. The initiative is the only AmeriCorps*VISTA project that uses the arts and humanities to reach youth. S.A.M. currently has seventeen VISTAs placed at nine nonprofit organizations. Mon, 01 Sep 2003 The Stage
AS220's stage has long been one of the busiest and most consistently varied venues in Rhode Island. The open booking policy has been embraced by an astonishing array of performers, and since 1985, the performance calendar has grown steadily. As of the fall of 2001, AS220 is hosting 10-12 events each week. These presentations include theater, a wide variety of musical genres, spoken word, and anything else that Rhode Island artists have to offer. Check out our current calendar to get the picture.
Tue, 10 Aug 2004 The AS220 Stinktank
The AS220 Stinktank is a small band of writers and activists who meet every
Thursday morning and work collaboratively on public policy proposals and
articles. Like the structure proposed in the Thinktank Manifesto,
the Stinktank is a healthy alternative to the perplexing preponderance
(and insidious influence) of other policy
Think tanks.
The Stinkers (as they prefer to be called) are currently focused on:
Fri, 07 Mar 2008 The Studio Program
AS220 offers residential and work space to artists who seek
a diverse, stable and affordable studio environment. The Studio Program
encourages a community of ideas rather than simply a community of tenants.
Our goal is to create a cooperative living environment driven by the artistic energy
of its inhabitants.
