Build AS220 (1992-1994)

In 1992, we embarked on an effort to own our own home in downtown Providence. We acquired a 21,000 sf structure on Empire Street which was severely blighted and almost totally abandoned. With a very limited budget of $1.2 million and an enormous amount of sweat equity and community support, we stabilized the building, achieved code compliance and 100% occupancy.

The Campaign for AS220 (2003-05)

This multi-year effort is a $3.6 million comprehensive initiative to address long overdue capital needs, eliminate debt and establish an endowment. $2 million was raised by September 2006, which funded major improvements to the complex, including:

• Restoration of Empire Street façade, storefronts and entrances
• Re-design and expansion of AS220 Performance Center and street level Gallery
• Upgrades to street level HVAC and electrical systems; sound and lighting improvements
• Creation of a new complimentary venue dedicated to food and beverage
• Rehabilitation of street level commercial spaces
