AIR HowTo

airbook1.jpg

As220 has one studio set aside on the third floor of the Empire street complex for visiting artists in residence who work on a focused project for an extended period of time (generally one week to three months). Invited artists use our facilities and exhibit new works that inspire conversation and innovation throughout the community.

Historically, visiting AIRs have been scheduled by *invitation only* but in the recent past we have been swayed by committed artists who have approached us with phenomenal ideas about projects that they wish to complete as an Artist in Residence at AS220. We do not offer a formal "application" for the AIR program; we ask that people who are serious about becoming an AIR to send us a proposal of the project they would complete during their month-long stay at AS220.

Each project must have a public component, which may take the form of anything from a zine to a performance or exhibit that is open to the public. Former AIRs have even collaborated with the Broad Street Studio by means of workshops and project involvement.

We offer our Artists in Residence a live/work studio on our third floor, generally for a month. Depending on the nature of the work, an exhibition space can sometimes be arranged, with enough notice. We've had all different types of artists, writers, performers and musicians as artists in residence (see About the AIRS for more info on former AIRs).

We'd be happy to review a specific project proposal that utilizes AS220's facilities and community. Send a one-pager to chloe@as220.org.
